"I f-ing told you nothing but bacteria would live!"

After a fierce fire-fight with Taliban insurgents, three 1000 lb. bombs were dropped on Mazdurak, a villiage in Kajaki, Afghanistan.
Poof. No more insurgents.

China arming terrorists in Iraq, Afghanistan

From The Washington Times, via Drudge:
New intelligence reveals China is covertly supplying large quantities of small arms and weapons to insurgents in Iraq and the Taliban militia in Afghanistan, through Iran.

U.S. government appeals to China to check some of the arms shipments in advance were met with stonewalling by Beijing, which insisted it knew nothing about the shipments and asked for additional intelligence on the transfers. The ploy has been used in the past by China to hide its arms-proliferation activities from the United States, according to U.S. officials with access to the intelligence reports.

Some arms were sent by aircraft directly from Chinese factories to Afghanistan and included large-caliber sniper rifles, millions of rounds of ammunition, rocket-propelled grenades and components for roadside bombs, as well as other small arms.

A little sanity, courtesy of SANE Works

From SANE Works' Colonel Thomas Snodgrass (USAF retired) -

In this part I, Colonel Snodgrass begins to apply his strategic critique of Limited War in an affirmative manner to address the problem of Iran. While it is meant as a starting place for a serious discussion, it is light years beyond anything available and will quickly become the text against which others will be judged.

Why are we at war?

To answer that question during World War II, the US Army Signal Corps produced a series of seven films under the supervision of Frank Capra (director of the post–war Christmas classic “It’s a Wonderful Life”) entitled “Why We Fight.” The film series explained with graphics and newsreel footage the issues, strategies, and consequences involved in our war to the death with the Axis Powers of Germany, Japan, and Italy. While the presentations in these films would be considered “dated” and “unsophisticated” by today’s standards, they were effective in their time to unite the American public behind the US war effort on the homefront as well as overseas.

Such unity of American effort is woefully lacking today. Obviously a conspicuous weakness of the Bush administration. But President Bush’ war team is not just bad at communication. Indeed, arguably, they are bad at communication because their message is so bad. For example, we were told for three years effectively that all was going as well as can be expected in Iraq. But the truth was and is that we are losing the war because we did nothing to cut off the flow of money, arms, personnel, and strategy flowing across the borders, notably the southern one with Iran. When a belligerent is not winning in a counterinsurgency, it is losing. Only after losing the last mid-term election, are we told that a reassessment is in order. But even then, the answer was a surge without any clear rationale for how the surge was going to actually make a difference beyond platitudes and wish lists.

More to the point, the Bush administration has remained steadfast in its resolve not to identify the enemy to the American people. We are only told that we are fighting terrorism and terrorists. At times, we are told they are radical Islamists who have somehow hijacked the noble religion of peace. But had President Bush made clear that our enemy is every nation, every regime, every network, every conspiracy, and every individual who preaches, teaches and advocates Shari’a (Islamic law), which is a political ideology bent on world domination, the ability to communicate war goals, progress and strategy would have become infinitely more effectively. Instead, he and his defense team insist we are fighting some kind of tactic without faces other than a few al Qaeda types which leads people to wonder why what we are doing in Iraq and even in Afghanistan.

Entire Global Military Spending Less Than U.S. Entitlements

The headline and story tries to convince the reader that the U.S. spends way too much on the military.

The United States spent $529 billion, slightly less than the entire GDP of the Netherlands, on military operations in 2006
Perspective. For another perspective, Rob Port reminds us that if you were to combine all military spending from every country on the planet, it still would be less than what the U.S. spends on entitlements in a single year.

A Memorial Day Reflection: Thank You Grandpa

Reposted from last Memorial Day, but every bit true today.

I just received an e-mail from my mother inviting our family to take a moment of time to reflect on her father who was a Marine killed in the Pacific during WWII. My mother never knew her biological father because she was so young when he went off to war.

I never knew my maternal grandfather, but I am proud of his voluntary service and of his supreme sacrifice to our country. RIP.

To my paternal grandfather, who was a pilot in WWII, and a career Air Force officer, thank you for your service. RIP.

To my father who was a Marine--once a Marine, always a Marine--thank you for your service. To my niece, currently a Marine, may God's protection and blessings be upon you in the service of your country.

The image above is from the Punchbowl National Cemetery, where my maternal grandfather is buried. The image below is from the National Archives of my grandfather's service record. If one of your relatives was KIA during WWII, you can visit the National WWII Memorial website and look up their information. There, you can also find where your loved one is buried. Perhaps, like me, you will be able to visit their grave someday.

Another Soldier Needs Your Help

We need some real help for a hero from Orlando, but is currently at Ft. Hood. He was shot in the hip during his tour in Iraq in Sept. 2006 and as a result, has nerve damage to that leg. Upon his return to Ft. Hood, he found out that his wife had spent all their savings, racked up $30,000 in credit card debts and bought a car in his name for somebody else! He's had to get a restraining order against her and he's been told by the Army that he not only has to continue to support her until they are divorced but is responsible for the debts! Needless to say he's in a bad way emotionally and financially. Aaron is feeling very hopeless over this financial situation. The case worker and social worker assigned to him are very concerned about his depression. I'd like to think that Soldiers' Angels can give him the proper welcome home and thanks he should have gotten last September. Any amount will help him.
If you can dig deep and send a donation to Aaron, please contact me.

As always, thank you from the heart of this military mom and fellow Soldiers' Angel.

If you are willing to help, please contact me. My email is listed on the contact page under "All-Seeing Eye."

Women In Combat

Appeasement comes in many forms, some obvious, some not so much:

OTTAWA (Reuters) - The Muslim hijab, banned at a taekwondo tournament in Quebec last month, will be allowed at the 2007 World Championship in Quebec City later this month, the International Taekwon-Do Federation announced on Friday.

The decision by a Quebec federation last month to bar a team of Muslim girls from taking part with their hijabs at the regional tournament had prompted protests of discrimination, but Quebec federation officials said it was a matter of safety.

That group was affiliated with the World Taekwondo Federation, a rival group to the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF), which said on Friday it would temporarily allow the head scarves at its May 31-June 3 championship.

Maybe I shouldn't criticize, maybe I should emphasize. Since we're rapidly reducing the radical Muslim male poplulation, it only makes sense to teach the radical Muslim female population to fight at a disadvantage.

Despite The Good News, Molson's Still Tastes Like Bantha Urine

Not that I've ever tasted Bantha urine, which would be impossible anyway, since Banthas only exist in the realm of George Lucas' diseased mind.

Where was I? Oh yeah.

The Taliban discovers that, well, when it comes to the Great White North, it's not necessarily a beauty way to go.

Canadian soldiers fought a fierce battle against the Taliban on Tuesday for the second day in a row, alongside soldiers from the Afghan National Army.

In Nalgham, about 35 kilometres south-west of Kandahar city, members of Hotel company made their way over mud walls and through waist-high water, as militants shot at them with rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire.

The company's commander, Maj. Alex Ruff, told CTV News the battle has gone well.

"Well, so far, and keep your fingers crossed, we haven't lost anybody and there are a lot less Taliban running around," he said.

Initial estimates suggested 23 militants were killed in the firefight.

Thanks to the scary brown person from Canada, who's only scary because the left tells me that all Conservatives like me are scared of brown people. From Canada and various other environs.

Excrement question: Can you decipher the "Great White North" and "beauty way to go" mystery?

Bonus Excrement question: Are you willing to date yourself by answering the first Excrement question?

Zawahiri Mocks Democrat's Surrender Bill (Updated, Bumped With Video)

zawahiri0507.jpgNo matter what words Harry Reid uses, redeployment, withdrawl, timetable, al-Qaeda see's it as surrender. It's a damn shame too that the Democrats handed Zawahiri this propaganda just as al-Qeada in Iraq's back is against the wall and our Apache crews are making short work of the Taliban's spring offensive.

Via ABCNEWS: In a new video posted today on the Internet, al Qaeda's number two man, Ayman al Zawahiri, mocks the bill passed by Congress setting a timetable for the pullout of U.S. troops in Iraq.

"This bill will deprive us of the opportunity to destroy the American forces which we have caught in a historic trap," Zawahiri says in answer to a question posed to him an interviewer.

Continuing in the same tone, Zawahiri says, "We ask Allah that they only get out of it after losing 200,000 to 300,000 killed, in order that we give the spillers of blood in Washington and Europe an unforgettable lesson."

Aussie PM: 300 Special Forces Will Return To Afghanistan

Australian Prime Minister John Howard is sending 300 special forces commandos back to Afghanistan in an effort to protect the ongoing reconstruction efforts.
(video below the fold)

According to Canada's National Post:
The deployment of 300 special forces troops to the southeast of Afghanistan, near the heart of the Taliban rebellion, is part of an increased effort needed to win the war in Afghanistan, he told a media conference.

"We have done this against the background of a deterioration in the security environment in southern Afghanistan," Mr. Howard said.

... Australia will also send air force radar crews to Kandahar, extra logistics and intelligence officers, and extend the deployment of a team providing protection and security, taking Australia's deployment to about 950 by mid-year and more than 1,000 by the middle of 2008.

Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, the Australian Defence Force Commander, said the special forces would hunt Taliban commanders. "Essentially their operations will be targeted on the Taliban, disrupting Taliban operations and going after the Taliban leadership," he said.

We Want Our Key Back

Well, this is sort of irritating.

In a yearly tradition, the church's doors were unlocked by a member of the Muslim family that has held the key for centuries.

Access to one of the holiest sites in Christendom, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, is controlled by Muslims.

Lovely. I hope they do windows.

For a little perspective...

Iraq Experiencing Unexplained Outbreak Of Stiff Necks

Buh-bye.

BAGHDAD - The former deputy in
Saddam Hussein's government was hanged before dawn Tuesday for the killings of 148 Shiites, an official with the prime minister's office said. Taha Yassin Ramadan, who was Saddam's vice president when the regime was ousted by the U.S.-led invasion that began four years ago Tuesday in
Iraq, was the fourth man to be executed in the killings of 148 Shiites following a 1982 assassination attempt against the former leader in the town of Dujail north of Baghdad.

The official, who witnessed the hanging but spoke on condition of anonymity because an official announcement had not been made, said precautions had been taken to prevent a repeat of what happened to Saddam's half brother and co-defendant Barzan Ibrahim, who was inadvertently decapitated on the gallows.

That last paragraph should provide some proof that Iraq is on the road to modernization. They're taking precautions to prevent their former ruthless overlords from being decapitated.

According to Manufacturer, Israeli 'Drones' Fly Over Iraq, Afghanistan

From The Associated Press:
Pilotless planes small enough for a single soldier to carry and operate are gathering intelligence for U.S.-led forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Israeli manufacturer said Monday.

Elbit Systems, one of Israel's leading defense electronics companies, said its little "Skylark" can cover an area within a range of 6 miles day or night. It is about 7 feet long with a wingspan of nearly 8 feet, the company said.

"Skylark is operational and currently deployed in the global war on terror in Israel, Iraq and Afghanistan," the statement said. It described the Skylark as suited for "close range, beyond-the-next hill, counter-terror missions."

For more information on the Skylark UAV, click HERE.

A Message from the Gathering of Eagles

There are two petitions now up online. One for people to sign only if they WILL be at the Gathering of Eagles on March 17th:

http://www.PetitionOnline.com/GOE31707/petition.html

The second petition is for those who will be with us in spirit:

This will be very helpful in giving us some idea of how many Eagles will be in attendance on the 17th and how many will be supporting us from home.

If you plan to be there, sign in. Those who just can’t attend but stand with us in spirit are asked to sign the second petition.

For more information, the Gathering of Eagles site is here.
