4 Red Cross Workers Freed in Afghanistan

Good news from Afghanistan (via the Times of India):

KABUL: Four employees with the International Committee of the Red Cross, kidnapped earlier this week in Afghanistan, were freed in good health on Saturday, officials said.

The four men - one from Myanmar, one from Macedonia and two from Afghanistan - were taken captive on Wednesday in central Wardak province while working to secure the release of a German hostage.

Mohabullah, the police director of criminal investigations of the Sayad Abad district where the four were taken, said the men had been released and were in good health. Mohabullah, who goes by one name, said he had no news about the German.

Continued prayers for the German hostage, Rudolf Blechschmidt, who was kidnapped in July along with his fellow engineer Ruediger Diedrich, who was murdered by their Taliban captors when he collapsed on a forced march through the mountainous region. Several Afghan co-workers were also abducted, and their fate remains unclear.

Stringer Quotes Himself as Witness

A Reuters stringer quotes himself as the eyewitness source claiming Americans fired into a crowd of civilians in Afghanistan today.

To call it a pattern would be an understatement. Remember the Taliban claim that 200-300 civilians had been killed by a NATO air strike which was thoroughly debunked? That story was also written by a "local" trainee.

One other name comes to mind: Adnan Hajj.

Sure there is a benefit to hiring locals, but there is also a cost. That cost is often the truth.

Lot's of other coverage of this. See STACLU or Say Anything for More.

Taliban Spokesman Arrested in Afghanistan *Bumped*

A bad day for Taliban mouthpiece Yousef Ahmadi, whose official statements about the kidnapping and murder of the S. Korean hostages last month prompted Rusty to ask:

May I ask the simple question: WHAT THE HELL IS QARI YOUSUF AHMADI DOING STILL BREATHING AIR? WE KNOW WHERE HE IS. WE KNOW WHO HE IS. WE KNOW WHAT HE IS. PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY, SEND HIM TO MEET HIS 72 VIRGINS!

Well, no virgins for Ahmadi, at least not yet. Via The Times of India:

KABUL: The main spokesman for the extremist Taliban movement, Yousuf Ahmadi, has been arrested in southern Afghanistan, the interior ministry said on Thursday.

Ahmadi was seized with his brother on Wednesday in volatile Helmand province, where the Taliban are in control of several districts, the ministry said in a statement.

Ahmadi regularly contacted the international and Afghan media from secret locations about Taliban engagements in southern Afghanistan, saying he was speaking on behalf of the extremist movement.

He was the main port of call for the media during the recent crisis over the Taliban's abduction of 21 South Korean evangelical workers in southern Afghanistan in July.

Two of the hostages were killed and the rest were released in August. He is the third Taliban spokesman to have been arrested since the hardline Islamic movement began their insurgency after being toppled from government by US-led forces in late 2001.

The only downside to this is that some poor aid worker is going to get kidnapped now to try to free him. Afghan President Hamid Karzai took a lot of heat for releasing 5 Taliban prisoners in exchange for Italian journalist Daniele Mastrogiacomo in March, and refused to consider a prisoner swap in the case of the Koreans. Let's hope he sticks to that resolve, and that Ahmadi is never heard from again.

Update by Rusty: Break out the champagne!

I actually have some personal history with this guy, and so do some of you. You may remember my "Messin' with the Taliban" post in which I gave out Qari Yousef Mohammed "Ahmadi's" satellite phone number. Or this post in which I published his e-mail.

You also may recall that Ahmadi had several websites up, all of which were taken down after our call to action and help from you, the readers, and from other friends of the Jawa. Ahmadi even issued a public statement about our efforts, calling us "the enemies of Allah"

Mwuahahahahaaaa!!!

In fact, I even got an e-mail message from Ahmadi's webmaster, Adil Watanmal (aka "Murchal") challenging me to come after him. Thanks to your help, he got served.

A very good day at the Jawa!

UPDATE: Downer alert?

CP:

A man claiming to be the Taliban spokesman that Afghan authorities said they have captured called The Associated Press on Thursday to deny it.

"I've not been arrested," the spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi told the AP, disputing an Interior Ministry statement that he had been captured in southern Helmand province on Wednesday...

Another Taliban spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid, had also contacted another AP reporter to dispute the Interior Ministry report, saying Ahmadi was free.

If true, we have his phone number. Why doesn't someone ice this piece of filth? Notice, that his friend Zabiullah Mujahid also called in. I have his phone number and e-mail too!

Won't someone rid us of these pesky Taliban?

Red Cross Workers Kidnapped in Afghanistan

It just never ends. Via the Miami Herald:

KABUL, Afghanistan --Two foreign Red Cross workers who aided in freeing a group of South Korean hostages last month have been abducted in Afghanistan as they were trying to help secure the release of a German captive, Afghan officials said Thursday.

The foreigners and two Afghan staffers failed to return to their base Wednesday evening after a mission to pick up the German man and fellow Afghan hostages in central Wardak province.

Ewaz Muslimyar, the police chief of Wardak province, said the two foreign aid workers were kidnapped in Salar district. It was not immediately clear who was behind the abductions.

"They weren't actually involved in the negotiations, but there was supposed to be an imminent release of a German hostage and five Afghans accompanying him," said Claudia McGoldrick, an International Committee of the Red Cross spokeswoman, from the group's Geneva headquarters.

"From what we understand, that operation was never completed for reasons that we can't confirm at the moment. We can't confirm if whatever has happened to them is connected to that episode."

She said the aid agency is in "direct contact with all parties to the conflict to determine exactly what has happened." She declined to give further details about the workers' identities "for security reasons."

Prayers for the safety of the aid workers and of Rudolf Blechschmidt, the kidnapped engineer. This must be devastating news for his family. Pray that they will be comforted for now, and that they will be blessed with his safe return soon.

Video: Osama bin-Laden, Come to Jihad

al-Qaeda also released a new video message from Osama bin-laden today. The Jawa Report has obtained a copy of the video. A quick review shows that this is an audio message that plays in the background of video footage of UBL in the mountains of Waziristan.

AP Via Yahoo News: CAIRO, Egypt - Al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden called on Pakistanis to rebel against President Gen. Pervez Musharraf in a new recording released Thursday, saying his military's siege of a militant mosque stronghold makes him an infidel.

The storming of the Red Mosque in Islamabad in July "demonstrated Musharraf's insistence on continuing his loyalty, submissiveness and aid to America against the Muslims ... and makes armed rebellion against him and removing him obligatory," bin Laden said in the message.

"So when the capability is there, it is obligatory to rebel against the apostate ruler, as is the case now," he said.

Bin Laden's voice was heard over video showing previously released footage of the terror leader. The video was released Thursday on Islamic militant Web sites and first reported by Laura Mansfield, an American terrorism expert who monitors militant message traffic....

...Maj. Gen. Waheed Arshad, a Pakistani army spokesman, said the army will continue its fight against terrorism, regardless of any threats.

"We have the aim and objective, as our national duty, to eliminate terrorists and eradicate extremism. The Pakistan army will continue to carry out its role against terrorists wherever they are found, whether in the tribal areas (of northwest Pakistan) or elsewhere."

"Such threats issued through videos or in any other way cannot deter us from fulfilling our national duty," he said.

We will make a copy of the video available shortly.

7200 Raisins Ordered Up

MargaReuterVille takes appeasement to a new level. Note the scare quotes around the word insurgent in the headline.

Pretty soon, "insurgent" will be dropped just as "terrorist" was, and we will soon see the headline "Over 100 Taliban Freedom Fighters Killed..."

Still, who am I to quibble? Over 100 Taliban TERRORISTS have been sent to Hell.

KABUL (Reuters) - More than 100 suspected insurgents were killed in a battle with U.S.-led troops in southern Afghanistan, the U.S. military said on Wednesday.

The battle erupted after a convoy of Afghan and U.S.-led forces came under attack in Shah Wali Kot district in Kandahar province, it said in a statement.

U.S.-led close air support pounded insurgent positions in the battle, it added.

Remember the 200 -300 civilians that were allegedly killed by a U.S. airstrike against top Taliban leaders? The Taliban claimed that what the U.S. really bombed was a busy market. Upon hearing claims of heavy civilian casualties, NATO investigated. Number of actual civilians killed: ZERO.

It's not so much that the Taliban makes these claims that bothers me, it's that the Western press actually reports them. more...

Mr. T and Chuck Norris in Afghanistan

Chuck-Norris.jpgI think the title pretty much says it all. I had to post this.

By Sgt. Brandon Aird
173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team Public Affairs

KUNAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan - Paratroopers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team spent July 22-28 in Dangam District in Kunar province near the Pakistan border. Lush farms that thrive from a stream flowing through the valley surround the area.

The Soldiers are from Red Platoon, Charlie Troop, 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment (Airborne), and they were in the area to help fortify the position of an Afghan national police station and also to establish and reinforce observations posts (OPs) with the Afghan national army on nearby hilltops.

The OPs help monitor and stop Taliban extremist movement in the area. Red Platoon named the OPs after one Soldier’s mom, another’s daughter, Sandra and Haden respectively and famous TV stars: Chuck Norris and Mr. T.

“We thought of the 'baddest' dudes we knew,” said Army Staff Sgt. David Benoit, a squad leader in Red Platoon. “Naming OPs like we do helps keep morale up.” more...

More Kidnapping, Death in Afghanistan

Just another day at work for the Taliban. An Indian engineer abducted in Baghan province, in northern Afghanistan, and 4 judges kidnapped and murdered in Ghazni province, where the 21 remaining S. Korean hostages are also being held.

First, the kidnapping:

The Taliban on Friday claimed that it had kidnapped an Indian engineer in Baghlan province of northern Afghanistan.

A local Taliban commander Bahlol said Taliban fighters abducted the Indian engineer, who was working at a local power project, on Thursday in Puli Khumri, the provincial capital.

The engineer has been brought to the central Ghazni province, where 23 South Koreans were abducted on July 19, he added.

Now the murders:

Kabul - Police found the bullet-riddled bodies of four judges in southern Ghazni province where some 23 South Korean Christian Volunteers were also kidnapped nearly two weeks ago, police said on Wednesday. The four men were captured by suspected Taliban two weeks ago as they travelled in Ghazni province from neighbouring Paktika province. The militants had demanded the release of their jailed comrades for their freedom.

"This morning we found the dead bodies of four judges who were shot dead by enemies of peace and stability," Mohammad Zaman deputy police chief of Ghazni province told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

Zaman said that the bodies were dumped in Deh Yak district of the province and police were sent to the area after residents informed the authorities.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to keep track of every kidnapping and murder committed by the Taliban, as the majority of their victims are ordinary Afghans whose stories never make the news. Let's pray for the safety of this latest hostage and for the swift and total elimination of the Taliban.

Pakistan: Obama is Ignorant

I'd just like to thank Pakistan for this...

Via Yahoo News: ISLAMABAD (AFP) - Pakistan accused Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama of "sheer ignorance" for threatening to launch US military strikes against Al-Qaeda on Pakistani soil.

Obama warned Wednesday that if he is elected president, he would order US forces to hit extremist targets on Pakistan's frontier with Afghanistan if embattled military ruler President Pervez Musharraf failed to act.

"Such statements are being made out of sheer ignorance," Pakistan's Minister of State for Information, Tariq Azeem, told AFP. "They are not fully apprised about the ground realities and not aware of the efforts by Pakistan."

I agree. What Obama said was almost, but not quite, as stupid as Pakistan's so called 2006 peace agreement with tribal militants the Taliban.

In the 2006 agreement, tribal leaders Taliban terrorists agreed to a peace deal with Pakistan a bunch of suckers. In the agreement the Taliban agreed to police themselves if Pakistan would just withdraw its troops from the area. Shortly afterward the al-Qaeda and Taliban terrorists began using the area as a safe haven to launch attacks on Afghanistan and to resume kidnappings and murders.

So who's the more Ignorant? The Obama or Pakistan? I dunno, close call.

Afghanistan Adopts The Western Way Of War

If you've read "Carnage and Culture" by Victor Davis Hanson, you'll know what I'm talking about.

If you haven't, remember Mogadishu. Our side lost 19, theirs, 1,000 to 5,000.

That sort of ratio has been played out since the allied Greek city-states defeated the Persians at Salamis.

In southern Helmand province, Afghan troops ambushed by militants called in airstrikes and fought back with small-arms and mortar fire, the U.S.-led coalition said. The coalition said at least 36 insurgents were killed in the fighting Monday, but no Afghan or coalition troops were hurt.

In Uruzgan province, police clashed for three days with militants blocking the road leading to Kandahar province, leaving 26 militants and two policemen dead, said Wali Jan, the Uruzgan deputy highway police chief. NATO-led and Afghan army troops joined the battle Tuesday, reopening the road for civilians traffic, he said.

Another 13 suspected militants were killed in Kandahar province, the Defense Ministry said.

Afghanistan isn't totally free, but they're more free than they were, and it seems as though they're going to fight hard for it.

Six-Year-Old Suicide Bomber

(Afghanistan) Although this story is outrageous and hard to believe, it's not out of the realm of reason. Undoubtedly, the Taliban is evil.

The story of a 6-year-old Afghan boy who says he thwarted an effort by Taliban militants to trick him into being a suicide bomber provoked tears and anger at a meeting of tribal leaders.

The account from Juma Gul, a dirt-caked child who collects scrap metal for money, left American soldiers dumb-founded that a youngster could be sent on such a mission. Afghan troops crowded around the boy to call him a hero.

Though the Taliban dismissed the story as propaganda, at a time when US and NATO forces are under increasing criticism over civilian casualties, both Afghan tribal elders and US military officers said they were convinced by his dramatic account.

Juma said that sometime last month Taliban fighters forced him to wear a vest they said would spray out flowers when he touched a button. He said they told him that when he saw American soldiers, "throw your body at them."

Unable to use the lure of 72 virgins with a 6-year-old, the Taliban used a different deception. However, being somewhat street-smart, the boy instead went to some Afghan soldiers and asked for help.

Taliban Baby Killers Get Two Little Girls

talibanyearbook.jpgThe Brave Mujahadbeens are out shooting at little girls for learning their ABCs, again.

Via The BBC:A group of girls returning home from school in Afghanistan's Logar province recently did not for a moment expect what lay ahead.

As they walked down a dirt track, insurgents sprang out of the parched farms and began firing on them.

Some of them fled into the farm, but two girls, one aged 13, the other 10, were killed in the ambush. Three of their friends were wounded........

Oh, and one of those new suicide bombers the Taliban sent off was picked up a bit short of NYC, he did make it to a check point in Afghanistan. Not a bad effort considering he was only six years old.
More from The BBC via Prairie Pundit: The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), to which Britain contributes 5,000 troops in southern Afghanistan, revealed that soldiers defused an explosive vest which had been placed on a six-year-old who had been told to attack Afghan army forces in the east of the country.

The boy was spotted after appearing confused at a checkpoint. The vest was defused and no one was hurt........RIA

US Airstrike Against Taliban

While the death of a child is regrettable, all the buzz is about how the airstrike led to the death of seven children. The real blame lies at the feet of the Taliban and al-Qaeda for indoctrinating kids with their murderous Salafi-Wahhabism and using young children as soldiers. The taliban considers 12 years of age old enough to begin learning the old chop chop choppity chop.

Via WAPO: SLAMABAD, Pakistan, June 18 -- U.S.-led coalition forces killed seven children in an airstrike against a suspected al-Qaeda hideout in Afghanistan on Sunday, adding to a civilian death toll that has become an increasing source of tension between the coalition and the government of Afghan President Hamid Karzai....

...Coalition troops had "surveillance on the compound all day and saw no indications there were children inside the building," Belcher said. "This is another example of al-Qaeda using the protective status of a mosque, as well as innocent civilians, to shield themselves . . . We are saddened by the innocent lives that were lost as a result of militants' cowardice."

Taliban Baby Killers Get Five

I was just watching a very fake al-Furqan video the other day that says it's haram to harm innocents while trying to attack coalition forces, especially women and children. Apparently the Taliban didn't get the memo.

Via CNN: KABUL, Afghanistan (Reuters) -- Suicide bombers attacked foreign troops in central and southern Afghanistan on Friday, killing five child bystanders and wounding at least two soldiers, local police and a provincial government official said.

Separately, a U.S.-coalition soldier was killed in combat in eastern Paktika province on Friday, the U.S. military said. In both south and east Afghanistan, Taliban insurgents are waging an insurgency against the Afghan government and its foreign allies.

In the first suicide attack, a bomber rammed his car into a convoy of international troops in Tirin Kot, capital of the central province of Uruzgan, killing five children playing nearby, a provincial government official said.

"Two international soldiers were wounded," Mohammad Nabi told Reuters. Three civilian adults were also wounded, he added.

Intel Experts : Musharraf May Not Make it Through the Summer

Via the New York Sun:

WASHINGTON — As a political crisis boils in Pakistan, American analysts both inside and outside the government are expressing new doubts that President Musharraf will be able to hold onto power through the summer.

Over the past month, the military regime in Islamabad has faced a rising threat of violent jihadis in its capital, as well as the struggle between the president and the suspended chief justice of the country, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. The twin challenges have led some analysts in the American intelligence community to begin questioning whether Pakistan's military, traditionally General Musharraf's most reliable ally, will support the current regime for much longer.

Stay tuned...

Meet al Qaeda's Newest Soon-to-be Dead 'Leader in Afghanistan': Mustafa Abu al-Yazid

Mustafa Abu al-Yazid.jpg
A new videotape from al Qaeda in Afghanistan, aired on al Jazeera TV, explains how the mujahideen are winning. In fact, they are winning so decisively that a new spokesman and "leader" was just introduced: Mustafa Abu-al-Yazid, to replace the other top al Qaeda leaders whos decisive victories have recently led to their deaths or capture.

In related news, some in the online jihadi community are complaining that al Qaeda has dropped its higher tech movie editing software and have now gone to Windows Movie Maker. Which is funny, I think, because it seems to indicate that the folks over at as Sahab (al Qaeda's video production company) may be having some problems. You know, just the usual problems experienced when defeating the Zionist-Crusaders time after time. We certainly hope that this doesn't mean that as Sahab's American producer, Yahiye Adam Gadahn (aka, Azzaz al Amreki) hasn't fallen into ill health.

Our friends over at CENTCOM's Exposing the Enemy have the following transcript from the al Jazeera broadcast. The al Qaeda video is in bold, the rest is al Jazeera commentary. What's so interesting is the a) level of support that al Jazeera gives to al Qaeda in this "news" broadcast b) the fact that al Qaeda confirms that Iraq is a "front" in its war against America: more...

Mullah Dadullah Dead, Updated Images/Video

deaddadullah3.jpg(Kandahar, Afghanistan) The one-legged operations commander of the Taliban, Mullah Dadullah, is reported dead. He was killed last night in a U.S.-led coalition operation supported by NATO and Afghan Security Forces in the Girishk District of the Helmand Province.

NATO has confirmed the death and a reporter familiar with Dadullah has seen and recognized his body.

The bearded face was pale and splattered with blood, and he appeared to have suffered a head wound.

Placed on a stretcher, the corpse was partially covered with a purple cloth. The left leg was missing.

The Afghan governor of Kandahar Province, Assadullah Khalid, also confirmed the killing.
"He was killed last night and right now I have his body before me."
Dadullah was a member of the Taliban leadership council and prominent military commander who specialized in suicide bombing, kidnappings of foreigners and beheadings. He also was known for his boastful videos and his ability to access the media.

Dadullah's death is considered a serious blow to the Taliban. A Pakistani newspaper editor said, "I think this is the biggest loss for the Taliban in the last six years. I don't think they can find someone as daring and as important as Dadullah."
