China Hacks Pentagon Computers

Last week it was Chinese espionage involving German computers and now it's being reported that China has hacked into the Pentagon's computers.

The Financial Times quoted US officials as saying the Chinese army made the attack, which crashed part of a system for the defence secretary's office.

[ ... ]

Chinese Foreign Ministry official Jiang Yu said Beijing "opposed and vigorously attacked" all attacks on the internet including hacking.

"Some people are making wild accusations against China ... These are totally groundless and also reflect a Cold War mentality," she said.

The Financial Times earlier quoted a senior official as saying the Pentagon had pinpointed the origins of the attack and another as saying there was a "high level of confidence" that the People's Liberation Army was responsible.

Naturally, China will assert that the People's Liberation Army wouldn't do anything sneaky. I'll assert they're fibbing.

Jack Bauer's Time In China Was Well Spent

Man, I don't even know how to begin a commentary about this.

The story claims that it's anti-corruption backlash, but, these are the ChiComs we're talking about here.

I'd like to believe it's an anti-Communism backlash.

Time will tell, I guess.

Chinese Missile Destroys Satellite

There is concern that the Chinese have not only launched a missile to shoot down a satellite but, at the same time, they have launched a new weapons race. Just ducky.

From The Age:

The US State Department has confirmed that on January 12, China used a land-based ballistic missile to collide with its ageing satellite, which was orbiting 865 kilometres above the Earth.

The enormous forces involved smashed the satellite into tens of thousands of pieces, creating a mass of space debris.

China's move appears to have caught Western nations by surprise. Experts believe that China has been provoked into staging this very public demonstration of its capabilities by the US's insistence on creating its global anti-ballistic missile system, in which Australia is to play a part.

They fear China's feat will encourage other countries to follow suit, placing the world's transportation, navigation and communication systems at risk.

The Chinese have introduced the new field of anti-satellite warfare to counter the American global anti-ballistic missile system. So, in response to a U.S. defensive weapon, China develops a new offensive capability, while creating an orbit full of debris.

Chinese Attack Terrorist Camp

(Northwest China) The Chinese government confirmed that a secret Islamic terrorist training camp within its borders has been attacked by Xinjiang Province Police. Eighteen terrorists were killed and 17 were captured in fierce fighting. The camp was operated by the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM), linked to al Qaeda and listed by the U.S. as an Islamic terrorist group.

From The Australian via John Ray:

It was the first time that China had announced the discovery of such a camp in its territory. Officials said that they had uncovered links between the activists and international terrorist groups, hinting at connections to al-Qa'ida.

The clash in the Pamir mountains on Friday was one of the deadliest for years in the restive Xinjiang Uighur autonomous region, where 8.5 million Muslims make up most of the population. One policeman was killed and a second wounded.

I'd suggest that the Chinese have many more problems with Muslim terrorists than have been reported.

UPDATE by Rusty: We've been warning about this for some time. I have seen several videos of Chinese Muslims fighting in both Afghanistan (for the Taliban) and in Xinxiang province. Here is the website of the East Turkistan Information Center, the propaganda arm of the ETLO (East Turkistan Liberation Organization). The goal of the ETLO is the ousting of the Han Chinese dominated communist government in Beijing, and the restoration of the short-lived independent Islamic Republic of East Turkistan--an Islamist state that predates Iran by over forty years.

China's Blog Real Name System

Predictably, the communist Chinese government will soon require real name registration for bloggers. Pseudonyms will not be allowed.

From Xinhuanet.com:

With widespread online rumor saying China will implement a blog real name system, the Internet Society of China (ISC) has clarified that so far the Ministry of Information Industry has not officially made any related policies.

However, a real name system will be an unavoidable choice if China wants to standardize and develop its blog industry, Huang Chengqing, ISC secretary general, told Xinhua on Sunday.

Blog industry? What's that?
The ISC, affiliated to the Ministry of Information Industry, was entrusted by the ministry to form a blog research panel to provide solutions for the development of China's blog industry.

"We suggest, in a recent report submitted to the ministry, that a real name system be implemented in China's blog industry," Huang said.

[ ... ]

Huang said the foundation of the blog real name system is an equilibrium between freedom and responsibility. "There exists no freedom without any abstention, and to limit also benefits the further development of this industry."

He said the system they have recommended is a background real name system, which requires bloggers provide their real names and other real information when applying for a blog but allows them to use pseudonyms in their blog articles.

So, let me see if I understand this scheme correctly. Bloggers will enjoy an equilibrium between freedom and responsibility by providing their real names and other "real" information to the ChiComs who, by the way, have been directly responsible for the deaths of millions of citizens.

Freedom and responsibility? Yeah, right! Only useful idiots will be fooled by this blatant ploy to censor Internet content by controlling, and eliminating when necessary, the individual bloggers.

Come on! You didn't think the communists would ever really allow free speech, did you?

Chinese Sex Toys

I always suspected those Chinese thumb handcuffs had an alternative purpose. But I was thinking sinister, not sexy.

The Chinese are much more adventurous than Europeans and Americans when it comes to sex toys, said Wu Hui , chairman of Wenzhou Adam and Eve Health Products. "It's strange. Among the countries we export to - developed countries in Europe and the Americas - they like simplicity. In China, they want more functions."

Being Evil

Google Code of Conduct:

Our informal corporate motto is "Don't be evil." We Googlers generally relate those words to the way we serve our users – as well we should. But being "a different kind of company" means more than the products we make and the business we're building; it means making sure that our core values inform our conduct in all aspects of our lives as Google employees.

Congress grills Internet execs on China policies:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. lawmakers lashed out at Google Inc. and other prominent Internet companies on Wednesday, with one Democrat questioning "how your corporate leadership sleeps at night" because of the companies' alleged complicity in human rights abuses by the Chinese government.

"Your abhorrent activities in China are a disgrace. I simply do not understand how your corporate leadership sleeps at night," said Rep. Tom Lantos, the ranking Democrat on a House International Relations subcommittee on human rights.

A bill to be introduced by Republican Chris Smith would make it illegal for Google or other US companies to continue to abet repressive regimes like Communist China.

Maybe Google Isn't That Evil

Google is being bashed for cooperating with Chinese communist authorities to restrict what Chinese citizens are allowed to search for on the web. I'm certainly no fan of the liberal establishment that runs Google, (and awards "newsite" status to obvious Islamist propaganda sites) but, fair is fair.

Junkyard Blog correctly points out the surreal tranquility of the images obtained by a Chicom Google search for "tiananmen"

However, if you click on the Chinese character at the left above the search window (which probably corresponds to "Web"), you find this link, which contains a number of violent images of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, including this one: more...

Google Bows to Beijing

(San Francisco) When Google opened a research office in Beijing last year, the obvious purpose was to convince the communist government that the company could adequately deny Chinese citizens access to information. Well, guess what? Google succeeded.

From Reuters:

"In order to operate from China, we have removed some content from the search results available on Google.cn in response to local law, regulation or policy," Andrew McLaughlin, Google's senior policy counsel, said in a statement.

"While removing search results is inconsistent with Google's mission, providing no information (or a heavily degraded user experience that amounts to no information) is more inconsistent with our mission."

Google, known for its "Don't do evil" mantra, is developing its China approach as it seeks to strike a balance between the freedom of information it champions and the censorship demanded by Beijing, which controls access to China's 111 million Internet users.

John Palfrey, an Internet censorship investigator, estimated that tens of thousands of search terms will be blocked to Chinese Web users. However, according to Rebecca MacKinnon of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society, if the average Chinese user is adequately informed of the censorship, "That is defiantly a significant step toward transparency and honesty with the users." I think MacKinnon is justifying Google censorship in China by indicating it's a "foot in the door."

One question that hasn't been answered thus far is whether Google will be providing information to the government about the users who search for censored information. Google has refused to comply with a similar request from the U.S. government.

Notably, Google will not offer email or blogging services until it can figure out how to strike a "balance between user interests and local conditions." Whatever that means.

Okay, I get the whole online dating thing. I get the whole advertising for a mate in the newspaper thing. Ladies and gentleman, Kim Jong Il has left the building

I saw over at AoSHQ that there were reports that North Korean dicatator's train had disappeared in China. WTF? I asked myself. Did someone pull the ol' Hans Brix shark-tank on his dictatorness?

Alas, I'm afraid it isn't so. Kim Jong Il has become the Elvis of the Far East. He's been spotted all over China, North Korea, and even Russia. And I'm afraid he's getting the rock star treatment in one Chinese city. Leading the Charge:

Chinese authorities took over a hotel in the southern city of Guangzhou on Thursday and barred public access amid rumors North Korean leader Kim Jong-il is making a secret visit.

Traffic was cordoned off several hundred meters (yards) from the White Swan Hotel and police and hotel staff stopped people from walking in.

"I am sorry, but the government has rented the whole hotel and in fact this morning we had to send our guests to other hotels," one employee told Reuters. "We will only open for regular business on the morning of the 16th."

Asked if any special visitors were staying at the hotel, she said: "We don‘t know. We have not been told anything."

In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan told reporters he had "no information to offer" on Kim‘s whereabouts.

Various media reports -- citing witnesses, diplomatic sources and those familiar with his movements -- have put Kim in Beijing or Shanghai. One source said he was in Russia.

Hong Kong reporters began flocking to Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, on rumors Kim was staying at the White Swan.

What next? A Jong Il, Hussein, Assad, Ahmadinejad reunion concert on the roof of the hotel? It's been done.

Nuclear Prototype Map Seized in Chinese Spy Case

(West Milton, New York) A map of the Kesselring nuclear submarine prototype facility in the Adirondacks was found in the possession of a naturalized Chinese-American citizen during a search of his Southern California home.

From TimesUnion.com:

A defense contractor accused of sharing sensitive U.S. military information with the Chinese government had a hand-drawn map of the Kesserling (sic) nuclear reactor site in Milton among his possessions, according to federal court documents obtained by the Times Union.

A federal indictment and probable cause affidavit does not say how Chi Mak, a naturalized American citizen, got the map or what significance it has. But the map was among the items seized when federal agents executed a search warrant Oct. 28 on the Los Angeles-area home, office and vehicles of Mak, his brother Tai Mak, and both men's wives.

The map allegedly in his possession was the first of two recent security breaches of the 3,900-acre Kesselring site, operated by Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory. It's home to prototype nuclear reactors used in Navy submarines.

The other security breach has been described as hunters trespassing on restricted property. The hunters are under investigation by the feds.
Mak and his brother are being charged with failing to register as Chinese agents, which is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. In court papers, Chi Mak, an electrical engineer for a defense contractor, is accused of stealing computer discs with information about Navy hardware, including a new system for launching aircraft from aircraft carriers.

According to the original affidavit, Mak, 65, stole discs from defense contractor Power Paragon, where he was a lead engineer on a sensitive research project involving propulsion systems for Navy warships, as reported by The Associated Press.

It's alleged that Chi Mak's wife, Rebecca Laiwah Chiu, provided copies of the stolen information to Tai Wang Mak who was arrested at LAX, along with his wife, as they prepared to fly to China in October.

Interestingly, it seems these alleged spies focus on specific areas of technical data related to naval vessels and systems. I wonder how many previous times the group's members took trips to China.

U.S. Warns of Islamic Terror Threat in China

east_turkistan_china_terrorists.jpg
Now what was all that talk about no terrorism in China? The Jawa Report has been warning readers of the low-level Islamist insurgency in China's western Xinjiang province for some time. Called East Turkistan by its own people, Islamic militants in the area have ties to Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network and are working to oust the communist Han Chinese and restore the brief lived Islamic Republic of East Turkistan--an Islamist state that predates Iran by over forty years.

In fact, after China's Strike Hard campaign of the early 1990s, aimed at wiping out the Islamic insurgency, many jihadi leaders fled to a neighboring country where they found safe haven and a network of like minded individuals willing and eager to supply them with arms and cash. Can you guess which country the fled to? Drumroll please.........

Afghanistan.

Khaleej Times:

The United States has warned American travellers to be vigilant against a terrorist attack in China’s restive northwestern region of Xinjiang after Beijing told police there to be prepared for danger.

The call came ahead of the 50th anniversary on Saturday of the establishment of Xinjiang as an autonomous region.

Muslim Uighur militants, whom Beijing calls terrorists or separatists, have been struggling for decades to make the remote region, formally established on Oct. 1, 1955, an independent state called East Turkestan.

“Americans considering travel to the region and those already there should review their plans carefully, remain vigilant with regard to their personal security and exercise caution,” a message e-mailed from the US embassy in China said.

“Terrorists do not distinguish between official and civilian targets. Americans in remote areas or border regions where military or police authority is limited or non-existent could also become targets.” ...

The Public Security Ministry said earlier this month that more than 260 terrorist acts had been committed in Xinjiang in the past two decades, killing 160 and wounding 440. It labelled East Turkestan forces the main terrorist threat to China.

Rumors abound, though, that the official number of terrorist attacks by Islamic terrorists in China are vastly undercounted. There is a healthy debate going on over at Peking Duck's blog as to the accuracy of the numbers (via Simon World).

And, of course, Islam Online blames Chinese oppression on the troubles. So the Chinese fascists are oppressing the Islamist fascists? Talk about your Sophie's choice scenario.....

Jihad in China

Is China a natural ally in the war on terror? Yes. An Islamist insurgency is raging in China. China, though, has generally suppressed any news of this insurgency. Official statistics put the death toll at 160 over the past 10 years in at least 260 seperate incidents, but the count is probably higher than that. Much higher.

Last month we brought you word of a suicide bomber blowing up a bus in China (images and story here). While that act of terrorism was probably unrelated to the jihad being waged against Beijing, it did spur me to look into the matter. Days after the bombing, an old video was posted at a forum I frequent made by terrorists linked to Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda who operate in China's East Turkistan (known as Xinjiang in Chinese) region. The video was apparently produced in Afghanistan, which borders East Turkistan, and was a call to arms against the Communist regime. The video was almost identical to a number of al Qaeda videos made around the same time.

This website, run by the 'East Turkistan Information Center', is a good source of information, but may have ties to the East Turkistan Liberation Organization. It is noteworthy that East Turkistan may have been the original Islamic state. The Islamic Republic of East Turkistan was establlished in 1933 and survived only three years. But this Islamic Republic was established 45 years before a similar state was established in Iran.

Today, China ran a rare story about it's internal problems with radical Islamists. Xinhua:

The "East Turkistan" terrorist forces remain to be the great terrorist threat to China at presentand in future, a Chinese anti-terrorist official said here Monday.

"In the last decade, the terrorist threats that China confronted with were mainly terrorist activities of 'East Turkistan' terrorist forces inside and outside Chinese territory, international terrorist groups and terrorists," said Zhao Yongchen, deputy director of the Anti-Terrorism Bureau under the Ministry of Public Security.

"The terrorist activities carried out by the three terrorist forces have not only jeopardized China, but also posed a threat toregional security and stability," Zhao said.

On March 27, 2003, the East Turkistan Liberation Organization hijacked a passenger bus of a Xinjiang company, killed all the 21 passengers and the driver and set the bus on fire with the bodies inside it.

The three terrorist forces openly summon the extremists inside China to carry out terrorist activities aiming at kindergartens, schools and government, or attack Chinese armed forces and government agencies, with means of explosives and poison.

The forces, he said, have also become part of the international terrorist forces. "They have close ties and even align with terrorist groups including the Taliban, the Uzbekistan Islamic Liberation Movement and Al Qaeda."

According to Zhao, many members of the "East Turkistan" forces have received military training in terrorist bases in central and south Asia and directly have taken part in terrorist activities sponsored by owners of the bases.

This could be an important signal from China to Washington that it is willing to do more in the war against militant political Islam.
