is sort of irritating.
Access to one of the holiest sites in Christendom, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, is controlled by Muslims.
Lovely. I hope they do windows.
For a little perspective...

It was a tradition established by Saladin to settle a conflict between various Christian sects and factions in Jerusalem who couldn't agree on who would oversee it. Regrettably, it is still that way. The Holy Sepulchre is divided up between five different groups; Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Ethiopian Orthodox, and a couple of others, all of them breaking out into shouting matches when two or more groups want/need to pass through or use a certain space. Sort of pathetic, but at least they aren't blowing each other up over it.

To be fair, the family that holds the key takes great pride in their duty and I have heard no Christian group at the Church complain about the family.

If the same family has been doing this in good faith for hundreds of years, it may not be as simple as just some Muslims enforcing Sharia. The above comments indicate to me that the matter is worth investigation in more detail. USA, all the way! and especially, a Happy Easter

So it sounds like you don't get the key back until you can learn to play nicely with the other christians

The rules/traditions David talked about are also why protestants do not have a section of the Sepulchre to themselves like other sects do. Protestantism came about after the agreement was made and nobody has updated it to include them. Though I can understand why, since the logistics of it would be insane given the number of subdivisions of protestantism.

I say we raise an army of faithful Christian soldiers, take Jerusalem by force, and drive out the mohammedans.
Oh wait- we tried that.
