Pappy Boyington

The University of Washington, in response to a proposal to erect a monument for decorated WWII Marine pilot Col. Gregory "Pappy" Boyington, decided that they didn't need "any more monuments to rich white men" and that they weren't too keen on the idea of putting up a monument that, you know, dealt with like, war and killing and stuff. Well, as it turns out the student senate (contact information here: http://www.asuw.org/directory.php) is having another senate meeting tonight, 2/14 at 5pm.

If you feel moved, drop them a line.

If you're alumni, feel free to tell them to go to hell.

Double that if you're a vet.

Just for reference, they wanted to have work started (not necessarily completed) by Jan 11, 2008 - the 20th anniversary of his death. Read through the minutes, fascinating stuff.

UPDATE:

This is the current response from the student council president, who I am sure, is getting deluged right now. I have to give the guy credit - it's a mature response in what must be a trying situation. He doesn't dodge or spin, he's taking responsibility - I think there are a number of DC denizens who would do well to heed his example.

The blog news and the draft minutes that were posted are inaccurate. First, Ashley Miller's statements were highlighting, as a point of information, that the majority of our statues are white males, which was an issue previously addressed last year, this is not in any way meant to go against Colonel Boyington. It was noted by the sponsor, Andrew Everett, about Boyington's heritage later. Jill Edwards made here statements as an individual, and it should not be assumed she speaks for all students. Karl Smith wanted to honor his service as a whole (he risked his life, endured 20 months in a POW Camp) in an effort to bring more support from a number of students who do not morally agree with war. These statements are in public discourse that has been and will always be at the University of Washington to educate on the questions and issues of our society.
I would also like to remind you that as ASUW President I cosponsored this bill to create a memorial, it failed by one vote, and a good majority of those who voted against it wanted more inclusion of other alumni who were combat veterans who earned the Medal of Honor. This week a new resolution to that effect is being drafted and introduced. In the meantime the ASUW supports veterans in other ways, currently we are supporting state legislation that will hopefully pass and guarantee veterans tuition waivers. In the end, the buck stops here, I would appreciate further comments to be made to me. Please do not participate or condone the hate-filled comments and phone calls made toward individuals in our student government. It has been appalling to see what is being said to people. I too am nauseated.

Ashley Miller makes a racist and sexist comment (which turns out to be partially wrong in Boyington's case, which proves her ignorance of history), but it's ok 'cause she was addressing an issue that was raised earlier.

But now, Mr. Dunbar wants to make sure that no one says anything nasty about Ashley.

Well, her comment about Pappy is one of the most RACIST and SEXIST arrogant comments I have ever read. All I have to say to Ashley is if you want to see a racist and sexist take a damn good look in the mirror, little girl!

I am sure that she means an "informed, diverse and equal campus community" of people who are just like her. Those people do not include veterans and anyone who does not agree with her political beliefs. Such hypocrisy! This stupid little girl proves yet again that some of the biggest racists, sexist and just plain haters happen to be liberals.

10 Why not honor Col "Pappy" Boyington? He was a man of unquestionable courage, and he was a graduate of the U. of Washington. It's a shame the students at your university can't get past their immature biases against a man who was willing to commit the ultimate sacrifice.

Unfortunately, I believe their lack of respect has it's roots in a real restriction of ideas on your campus. I attended a System Safety course two years ago and was appalled with the limitations of free speech. Your bookstore at the HUB only displayed anti-conservate and anti-Republican books. When asked, "where are the conservative books," the manager stated, "we have some." However, he couldn't produce one at the time.

By restricting the debate of ideas, you've lowered your university to the standards that were common in the "old Soviet Union" and many Islamic countries today. You would much rather honor a mass-murder like Abdul Jamal than someone willing to fight for your freedoms. The attitude of the UW Student Senate is a disgrace as a whole. I might expect riots on your campus should an honor be erected just like the manufactured riots going on today in Islamic countries over a few political cartoons--or maybe the bulk of your student body isn't reflected in the UW Student Senate.

14 Her blog is rather revealing as to the type of person she is and is becoming. She doesn't seem particularly bright. Firstly, I would think a prime rule of public stupidity preparation is to make sure that you do not have your cell phone number and home address publicly posted on your blog. Children say stupid things, but then that is because they are children. The problem is when children think they are all grown up and take themselves very seriously and say stupid things while the rest of the world can see that they are still children.

Perhaps her journal shows amazing insight and intellectualism and would lead one to take a closer look at her comments and the context. Or perhaps her journal reads more like the rambling thoughts of a 15 year old spoild brat and makes one think she is a pampered, moronic byproduct of too much lassiez faire parenting, MTV, ecstasy and a failed public school system. 31 Reading through the postings I am both appalled and amazed at some of the comments. First I am appalled at the ignorance of some of the statements people are willing to make publicly. Suggesting that we kill someone simply because they have a different view, even if done in jest, is horrifying. Suggesting that we never enter into armed conflict, as appealing as it may be is an unrealistic position . War is a terrible thing which should be avoided, but can not be avoided at the price of freedom. Agree or disagree with the current conflict, it can not be denied that World War II was a necessary conflict. Making blanket statements shows a lack of willingness or ability to think.

Second, I am amazed that folks are willing to play along with someone like t who lacks any conviction (as demonstrated by his use of a false e-mail address), and gets his jollys by goading a reaction from others.

34 The problem here is that the children involved making the comments are not old enough to have experienced the horror of WWII and are simply ignorant of the historical barbarity of the Army of the Empire of Japan prior to and during WWII. College children, by definition, are a privileged lot and sometimes look down their noses at anyone less fortunate (as evidenced by T's disdainful comment regarding McDonald employees). Whether Boyington deserves a statue should not be a matter of race or class - the sole issue that should have been considered is whether he brought more honor and recognition to the UW than other graduates. Disqualifying him because of his race, or because he was heroic in battle against an enemy trying to destroy our country only demonstrates the ignorance of the persons attempting to disqualify him.

Countless millions of Americans have sacrificed with their lives to give us our freedom. I would like to personally thank all veterans that have served in past wars and those that are currently serving our country. 43 As a native Seattle-ite, I used to dream (back in ancient times -- the early 60s) of attending the University. But as if to prove not all white guys are rich, I determined I could not afford to attend the school after all. But now I see the controversy over what should have been a non-controversial issue in the first place: honoring an alumnus who did just a bit in his own way to make sure the parent of these â€¦ "students" â€¦ got the chance to live long enough to have them in the first place.

Is this gratitude or what? Glad I did not have the money to waste.

My dad, who still lives in Seattle, is a veteran of the same conflict as Pappy, and a member of the alumni association. I expect the student Senate will be hearing from the Association presently â€¦

European Islamists Counter Danes With Cartoons Depicting Hitler, Holocaust

A European Islamic organization called the Arab European League has countered the recent cartoons depicting the prophet Mohammed with cartoons of their own, questioning the Holocaust and showing Anne Frank in bed with Hitler. This statement explains their rationale:

After the lectures that Arabs and Muslims received from Europeans on Freedom of Speech and on Tolerance. And after that many European newspapers republished the Danish cartoons on the Prophet Mohammed. AEL decided to enter the cartoon business and to use our right to artistic expression.
Just like the newspapers in Europe claim that they only want to defend the freedom of speech and do not desire to stigmatise Muslims,we also do stress that our cartoons are not meant as an offence to anybody and ought not to be taken as a statement against any group, community or historical fact.
If it is the time to break Taboos and cross all the red lines, we certainly do not want to stay behind.

Haven't cartoons like this been printed in the Islamic media everyday since 1947? Not suprising that the counter offensive would involve taking a swipe at the Jooos, since, as usual, the Joooos are behind everything, everywhere, all time, even the printing of the Danish cartoons. I understand how people can be insulted. We split religion and the state back in the 1700s while islam is just coming to terms with this. Islamic societies have a hard time with bottom-up power structures, meaning they are usually hierarchical and you obey the book and your leaders.
I have great iranian friends. They live a double life within the confines of their house and out on the streets. its sad to see them suffer having to behave in certain ways just because a book written 1500 years ago tells you you have to do that. it's gonna take a lot of understanding for uneducated muslims to understand that if you were born in china you had no choice being buddhist or toaist and that islam is not the only religion out there and salvation is only possible via islam..ditto that with evangelical christians....

Whoever advocated violence should be sent back to whatever country they came from, or if they were born in the West, they should have their citizenship revolked and sent to whatever is the country of their heritage. And before you say anything, reacting to the threat of violence is quite different than the one who proposed violence as a solution, and you know who you are.

23 An insulting cartoon doesn't take much effort (see Hitler screwing a jewish child) if it doesn't bear some semblance of similarity to the object of its ridicule. Hitler, for instance, is considered to have had an aversion to sex of any kind. (It is theorized he was a homosexual in denial). So depicting him molesting a young jewish child is simply gratuitous, and not very clever. That is in stark contrast with the depictions of Mohammed with an exploding head, because muslims are terrorists. That, you can argue, is clever.

Also, this Hitler/Ann Frank cartoon should be seen in light of the fact that Mohammed himself was a pedophile (his "wife" was only 12 years old). What we have here, therefore, is an obvious case of projection at a very subconcious level by our muslim cartoonist. Pedophilia, like jihad, runs like an unbroken thread through his religion all the way back to its founder. Subconsciously, it appears in their cartoons.

As a side note, young boys and homosexuality are are still very popular in the muslim world given their women are completely hidden from view under burkas. I had a Paki (Pashtun) friend in college who used to laugh about male-on-male gang rapes at university.

The Muhammad cartoon was pointing out that the Muslims have to address the issue of suicide bombers in their midst. The cartoon and perhaps even the idea behind it might indeed have been offensive but it was making a point..this is just a childish "if you can do it I can to" response.

Muslims have protested in the streets of London about the British forces in Iraq. Chants of "Death to Tony Blair" and "Bomb Bomb Pentagon" echo throughout London when the Muslims gather in these protest.

There are laws that prohibit acts of arson, riots, anarchy and threating citizens lives because you don't like what they published.

To all the Muslims out there. If you move to a country that allows free speech, it comes with the territory, like it or not. We don't change our laws if you're offended or if you've been insulted. The problem with some that migrate to others countries is your attitude, "I don't like this, I don't like that, so change it cause I said so".

You have a lot of nerve coming into a country and demanding what should and shouldn't be allowed under our laws. If you don't like the laws, go back home to the third world conditions from which you came from.

Every politican in my area of the state was "conservative" until they got to Washington or our state capital and fell in with the wrong crowd... the GOP party leadership. In 1966, I took an oath to defend the Constitution of the US, and, I am still very serious about that oath. After the September 11th attacks, I was called by the Commadant of the Marine Corps organization that I had helped form, and, was asked if I wished to join a group of armed men. He told me that FEMA was offering to equip former military men, and, had some money to do so. I would have been given a fully automatic rifle, a uniform, etc. I asked the Commadant, if the group would be sworn to defend the Constitution, or, if the groupp would do the bidding of FEMA, even if it violated the Constitition, especially, forcing people at gunpoint to take a vaccination. I told him if it was the later, in contravention of the Constituion, I was afraid that I would have to use whatever method necessary to defend the Constitution and the People of the US. He never called me back. My friend, a federal agent, things that I am a little to the right of Attila the Hun. So, Ken, I do hope that you are employed in a position where you are not required to use your "reasoning" or pyschic powers, because they are not worth a shit.

Check out the movie "Air America," starring Mel Gibson. I now view it as a documentary.

I used to think of Oliver North as a real hero. He was a Marine, there was kinship. Then, I found out that he was a moraless, drug running piece of filth. When he came to my hometown to speak, I didn't go see him.

Like I said, many of you will get on the FEMA buses and go off to your fate. Years ago, I listened to shortwave radio. It was right after the Soviet Union allegedly fell. There were two talk show hosts who had a great radio program, called the Intelligence report. One day, they said that, now, that the US Pentagon and the military complex, no longer had an "Enemy", that they would need a new enemy. They went on to say that the new enemy would be "terrorists." Now, please understand, that this was in the very early 1990's, when most Americans could not spell terrorist, much less comprehend the concept of terrorism What they next said, has always stuck with me. The new terrorist enemy would be Muslims. The reason being, that Muslims are more devout in their religion and toward God. Muslims would be very reluctant to go into the globalist plan of a Godless New World Order. Muslims would resist. Therefore, the globalists would need to come up with a plan to attack Muslims and make them the enemy. Christians are more easily deceived, as you can see from what is going on today. Thousands of Muslims demonstrating and buring European flags on television, and, Europeans becoming accepting of a globalsit attack on Iran and Syria. They played both the Muslims and the Europeans like a fiddle. There will be multiple attacks on US soil, most likey some will involve a light nuclear weapon. Then, right on cue, the Americans will pile in their cars and drive furiously down the highways with little American flags fluttering from their autos. We are are pretty naive when it comes to all this intrique, and, we all, Muslim, European, and, American, will typically act in the manner that the globalists had estimated.

The plots of September 11th were not hatched in a cave in Afghanistan, but, in the more sinsister halls of the Council of Foreign Relations in New York, and, Darvos, Switzerland.

Chicago, beware. Larry Silverstein, the jew who bought the entire World Trade Center complex, just two months prior to September 11th, for $250 million, has recently bought a very tall building in Chicago. Silvestein made $3.5 BILLION dolldars off of the insurance after the attacks. How convenient. It didn't hurt that Mineta, the Transportation Secretary, sent out a memo in the summer of 2001, about two months before the attacks, warning Airports and Airlines to NOT SINGLE OUT ANYONE OF MIDDLE EASTERN APPEARANCE for special attention. Now, why would he do that? I suspect that he did it to allow agents to move freely and carry out the globalist plot to carry out the attacks. I could generally recognize a European origin Jew, however, when it gets to middle eastern born Jews, of that heritage, I would be hard pressed to identify a Jew from a non-jew.

At the time of the attacks, the US Congress was putting pressure on Israel to treat the Palestinans more humainly. The Congress had even talked about cutting aid to Israel. Just a couple of months later, the September 11th attacks took place and there was no more talk of cutting aid to Israel.

Here are just some of the people whom I believe were involved in the September 11th attacks. It is a wide spectrum group, but, I believe that all had an interest in bringing about the New World Order.

I see Brits killing Catholics in Ireland, Brits killing Serb Cathoics, and, Brits killing Muslims and Cathoics in Iraq. As far as I can tell, it seems like Brits and their colonialist brethern, the Americans, are out all over the world killing people, not the Muslims. If the Muslim does kill, it seems to be more localized, whereas the Brit and the American will travel thousands of miles in order to kill those whom have never done anything to them.

There are differing reasons for fighting in each of those countires and I am sure that you would find globalsit involvment in initiating and keeping the fighting going. Chechnya was fine until Russia invaded it again. I support the Chechnyans and their stuggle to be free of Russia. I admire the courageous resistance that the Chechnyans have mounted against the Russian aggressors.

I am concerned about the war in the Sudan, but, apparently, I am the only one. Neither the UN nor the US has done anything to address the situation there. I do not know all the cultural details, only what I hear on US television, which is always suspect. That is a sad situation. Again, I do not know the details of both sides in that war. I would hope that the Moslems were not killing the southerners merely because they are Christians, as the Brits killed Catholics in Ireland, Serbia and Iraq, merely because they were Catholic.

A JOOISH Defense League member was sentenced Thursday to 20 years in prison for his role in a plot to bomb a mosque and the field office of a Lebanese-American congressman.

U.S. District Judge Ronald S.W. Lew gave Earl Krugel, 62, of Reseda, the maximum sentence under a plea deal because of what he said were Krugel's actions "promoting hatred in the most vile way."

During the hearing, Krugel apologized to the court and said he was a changed man, calling his actions "wrong-headed and illegal."

"I asked the court to show compassion, not for my own sake, but for my family," he said.

Lew said he was not convinced, noting that Krugel failed a polygraph test five times during the investigation.

"You are not that changed a person. You have more to give," he said.

Krugel had pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to violate the civil rights of worshippers at Culver City's King Fahd Mosque and one count of carrying an explosive device in connection with a conspiracy to impede or injure Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Vista.

Jordanian editors arrested over Danish cartoon

From BBC News:

Two Jordanian newspaper editors who published cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad have been arrested.
Jihad Momani and Hisham Khalidi are accused of insulting religion under Jordan's press and publications law.

Here's what Momani wrote to accompany the cartoon:

"Muslims of the world be reasonable.
What brings more prejudice against Islam, these caricatures or pictures of a hostage-taker slashing the throat of his victim in front of the cameras or a suicide bomber who blows himself up during a wedding ceremony in Amman?"

Or a so-called moderate Islamic government that arrests editors for printing cartoons.

4 I was disappointed myself. I was disappointed that such a statement would be made following their complete silence over the cartoons in our own papers and the tax payer funded "art" we've seen in recent years. I would have felt only marginally better had the State Department also condemned the behavior displayed by those making threats. But no mention was made in that respect. They made it sound like our free speech is more valid than theirs. When someone is killed over this, many will blame the cartoonists and not the killers. And the state department has inadvertantly propped them up by trying to "score points".

6 The U.S Government reaction to this should be unwavering and staunch, we should withdraw our diplomats from Jordan, and any other U.S asset in the area, cut off aid (if any) and make Jordan aware that we will not stand by and watch them execute 'apostates' and suppress freedom of speech, or press if we're serious about spreeding democracy in the middle-east.

I am no fan of the Democrats but this administration has shown time and time again, it will turn a blind eye to some countries in order to get the results it wants ie:
North Korea: brutal oppressive regime, China same, but sells us cheap goods.
Iran radical fanatics in power, dangerous. Saudi Arabia, same but sells us oil.
The problem in turning a blind eye, is eventually they'll poke the other one out too, as most of these countries rely on our money as much as we rely on their products we should hit them in the pocket. Unfortunately the American people have no stomach for paying extra for products, in order to punish some of these regimes financially.

A court proceeding takes time and sometimes allows for a sensible debate to develop over the issue at hand.

With that out of the way, let's look at who is at fault for this mass hysteria. Not the Danish. These cartoons came out late September last year. Influential Muslims from Denmark then quietly went, armed with the pictures that were printed AND a few extras they tucked in there themselves, throughout the Middle East building a case with Islamic governments. For four months, barely a ripple in the pond. Then WHAMMO!

The Middle East and South East Asian governments released the flood of horrors of what were essentially cartoon images and deliberately provoked the outrage you see today. This was carefully crafted and executed (excuse the pun) by evil people.

Now, who's guilty of causing this insanity? And I ask all Muslims rampaging right now - who are the puppets?

And regarding the State Department's "quote". Get over to rightwingnuthouse to find out what they really said. I should have known better. Shame on me.

Muhammad Cartoon Rage Via Email (Updated)

Although we have an email privacy policy (at Hyscience - where originally posted) that assures readers that their emails are never published, we have a long-standing tradition that the policy DOES NOT APPLY TO DEATH THREATS. The majority of death threats that we get are to us personally, and some of those have been posted in the past.

However, today we received an email from Belani Bulasin in Turkey, that applies to all of us "blasphemous Westerners." His English is better than what we've seen from most jihadist emails in the past, so one would assume that he is bright and educated.

While he's certainly entitled to his opinion of whether or not the images of Muhammad should or should not have been posted, making death threats to individuals or a civilization, or to any persons of any group of any size in between, is inappropriate and unacceptable behavior in today's world.

This applies to everyone, even those who by choice or happenstance live in a stoneage culture, and follow a violent and intolerant religion that worships someone they view as a prophet, but who is viewed by much of the world as the wellspring of terrorism.

Since Belani's message applies to the entire Western civilization, and is indicative of the intolerant, violent, hateful, and murderous religion that he follows, radical Islam, a belief that follows jihad and seeks world domination, and submission to Islam by non-radical Muslims and non-Muslims alike, we feel it very appropriate to post his email here:

The only voice of reason coming out of the Muslim world I've heard on this comes from a Canadian Mulsim. He condemned the cartoons, which is his right, but balanced it with a condemnation of the violence: "The protests in the Middle East have proven that the cartoonist was right," said Tarek Fatah, a director of the Muslim Canadian Congress. "It's falling straight into that trap of being depicted as a violent people and proving the point that, yes, we are."

Iâ€™m sure you find that these images of Mohammed are offensive. No one likes to see their religion denigrated. And I say screw political correctness, if I have an opinion I am going to let it fly. You must not know much about Christian fundamentalism, I grew up with it as a Southern Baptist. Do you not see parallels between the two? I'll admit we don't have a theocracy in the US as many Muslim countries do but there are similiarities in their mindset. It's called "straight thinking" also known as orthodoxy. People are told what to believe and to not ask questions, it's been going on for centuries.

I don't think it's unreasonable to have a problem with that if you cherish freedom of thought and religion. I also have a problem with hypocrisy.. giant mega-churches and preacher's salaries, limos....how does any of that fit in with Jesus' teachings on the love of money?

This is not a big mystery. What drives suicide bombers is indoctrination into the cult of violence espoused by radical Islam. Oh yeah, also personal greed and lust (72 virgins, anyone?).

Bhatt doesn't explain how western media are "demonizing" Islam while maintaining a stout embargo on images from the 9/11 attacks.

Bhatt should research the cult of Kali, which murdered thousands of innocent victims before being exterminated by the British in the nineteenth century. If Bhatt and other so-called moderate Muslims don't wake up, and stop seeking excuses for the barbarians sheltering within their own religion, history could repeat itself.

1 I'm missing the part where suicide bombing is supposed to be glorified. If you want to see suicide attacks glorified on film, the best examples I can think of are the propaganda posters put out by the IJA toward the end of WW2. This guy just says he's going to make the film from the bomber's POV. It might turn out to glorify terrorism, but you'll have to watch it to find out. "All Quiet on the Western Front" was written from the German POV, but it hardly glorified Prussian imperialism.

However, if you can suggest that their is a side story, to people decimated by glass / ball bearings / nails at the hands of a suicide bomber, that does not hit military, nor a Government targets, perhaps you could fill us all in?

3 Let me see. A Muslim makes a film about suicide bombing starring his own son in the lead role of the failed suicide bomber. I'm pretty sure he is going to show the bomber being brainwashed by a radical cleric in a London mosque. The cleric will be depicted as an evil adherant of the radical Salafist cult of Islam, where the Koran is taken to literally mean that the kufirs who refuse to convert to Islam are to be killed, their riches are to be plundered, and their women are to be raped and put into harems.

After the failed bombing, the young man will regain his senses, and realize that bombing innocent people is wrong, and he will reject the radical Salafist cleric and turn him over to the authorities, and will testify against the cleric in a court of law in an attempt to get the cleric jailed for inciting murder. The cleric will be convicted, the young man will moderate his view, and become a dedicated moderate Muslim who takes it upon himself to rid the World of radical Islam.

Now I would pay good money to see that movie. I guess we will just have to wait and see, but I won't hold my breath. I have a feeling the movie will be entirely different.

It seems to me that if he really did want to delve into whatever mental struggle he seems to believe occurs in suicide bombers, then perhaps it would be far more beneficial to have the central character being a reformed would-be bomber who has abandonned all prior held beliefs of radical Islam and now strives to put an end to it. But I guess that's not artsy and chic enough.

But then again, if I was born an Arab and had a suicidal chip on my shoulder for the U.S., I would have flown a jet into a docked nuclear aircraft carrier, not into an aging office building full of marketing weenies. The former would have enraged only the U.S. and left the rest of the world sending token condolences (while hiding their smirks with the other hand) but the actual terrorists chose the latter. I still don't know why. I'd have to see it from their POV to understand. For now my working hypothesis is that they were stupid.

I guess that's why the director chose London for the subject matter - so it won't hit too close to home. Hey I think a Texan as a bigshot Hollywood would be a good thing. Afterall, there's a Texan in the Oval Office and he's doing an okay job.

Atheists Protest Memorial Crosses

(Salt Lake City) American Atheists Inc. has filed suit in U.S. District Court to remove highway crosses placed to memorialize Utah Highway Patrol troopers who have died in the line of duty. The crosses stand about 12 feet high and display the trooper's name and the Utah Highway Patrol emblem (example). They are placed near the location where the troopers were slain.

Specifically targeted by the lawsuit are Col. Scott Duncan, superintendent of the UHP; John Njord, executive director of the Utah Department of Transportation; D'Arcy Dixon Pignanelli, executive director of the Department of Administrative Services; and F. Keith Stepan, state facilities director.

The plaintiffs are Stephen Clark, Michael Rivers, Richard Andrews and American Atheists Inc.

From the Salt Lake Tribune:

Rivers said the purpose of the suit is to eliminate religious symbols used by government agencies and placed on government land. American Atheists claim to have a membership of 30 million people. They are not opposed to memorials, just the crosses.
"We feel the department of transportation, by allowing the Utah Highway Patrol Association to pick a religious symbol is unfair. We think it should be totally secular with no religious theme," Rivers said. "[The cross] is a Christian religious symbol. People will look at those and automatically assume that religion is a part of it."

Supporters of the memorials stated that the families of the fallen would be devastated and the legacies of the slain troopers would be tarnished if the crosses were removed. According to Sgt. Todd Royce, past president of the Utah Highway Patrol Association, the crosses are no different from those at other government memorial sites, such as Arlington National Cemetery.

American Atheists Inc. is asking for $1 in damages and the removal of all crosses on government property. I believe a blind person can see what the atheists are aiming for. Logically, it's the removal of all crosses at veterans' cemeteries throughout the nation. American Atheists also wants the court to rule that it's unconstitutional to display the highway patrol insignia on a cross.

5 While I don't agree with the use of permanent roadside memorials, this lawsuit, like all the others is an utter waste of time. These people are pissed because the cross was chosen for the memorial. Could it be that a cross was chosen because the slain officers were Christian? Afterall, one usually doesn't find a cross at a Jewish memorial, or a star of David at a Christian memorial. The atheists fail to understand that for those of us who believe in a higher authority, religion is a big part of life and subsequently death. Therefore any rememberance of a deceased person will usually involve religious symbology. It has nothing to do with the government advocating the religion. There are far bigger and more important things in this world to be offended about.

i could understand the family of say a Jewish patrolman bringing a lawsuit if they were told they had to have a cross, but it's really nothing to do with the AA.

See, I believe in the republican, rather than the democratic form of government, because only in a constitutional republic can the rights of minorities and the individual, (who is the smallest minority), be protected from the mob, whereas in a true democracy, only the mob enjoys protection through numerical superiority, and minorities and individuals get crushed. I'm also a libertarian because I believe that the role and scope of government must be limited so as not to intrude upon, or impede the daily lives of the people without actual need, and then only within Constitutional boundaries. The problem in America today is that everyone seems willing to disregard the Constitutional rights of others as long as they get their own agenda put into law, and so we have religious fanatics trying to interject their religious beliefs into the scientific education of children, among other efforts, and secular fanatics trying to intrude into all other aspects of education, politics, and life. The only thing that anyone isn't doing is following Constitutional principles, but rather both left and right are trying to destroy the Constitution piecemeal so that they can establish cultural and political dominance.
What is happening now is no different in principle than Stalin's purges or the Nazi death camps, or any other event in human history, wherein one group tries to destroy another group because they hold different beliefs; we're just not stacking up the bodies. Yet.

First, teaching creationism is fine. In church, that is, but not in public schools where kids need to learn things that have actual value in real life. See, creationism is not a science, nor is any part of it an actual theory, nor is it in any way based on real science, but rather it's religious ideology, and nothing more, and thus is fine for Sunday School, but not high school. To me, the desire to have religious dogma pushed on schoolkids is just a symptom of nothing more than a desire to proselytize without being honest enough to say so.
