Germany Busts Online Jihadi
Good news one more enemy propagandist out of action.
NY times:A 36-year-old Iraqi man identified only as Ibrahim R and suspected of spreading video and audio recordings by leaders of Al Qaeda on the Internet was arrested near western Osnabrück and could be charged with supporting a terrorist organization, federal prosecutors said. They said the messages were from Osama bin Laden, his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, and the leader of the Iraq insurgency, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who was killed in June.
1
Why can't NoJewTube (or NoJewGoogleTube) be charged with spreading enemy propaganda on the internet? Or do they have a specific clause in their terms of service in which they're not responsible for the promotion and spread of jihad porn and propaganda?
2
As far as I know as long as they are unaware they are fine. Once they are notified they have to pull it. You can also run it as news for informational purposes and it's not a crime. Context is everything in this matter. Alos if you are a US govt declared terrorist organization you cannot broadcast from USA.

Hats off to the German police! As they say in their own precise language: "Ausgezeichnet! Gut gemacht!" :-) However, the German judiciary has in the past been too weak to convict or severely punish terrorists.

The YouTube Jihad : It Really IS a Jihad, Folks
The Mudville Gazette summarizes an al Qaeda working paper summarizing a plan for an expanded English language propaganda effort:
Najd al-Rawi, the document's author, begins by noting that although they've been successful in many ways, the jihaddists haven't fully exploited the opportunities presented by the US media. Inspired by a video from bin Laden addressing the American people with subtitles in English, the author notes that "It seemed the Shayk wanted to send a clear message to his brother mujahadeen to pay more attention to this part of the mission." He points out that videos from the "Shayks of jihad" are in great demand in the western media. . . .
Suggested projects include English translations of the declarations of the Shayks of Jihad "to throw fear into the American people's hearts". Cited examples include "Sharia Rules regarding the use of WMDs" by Shayk Nasir al-Fahd, (probably a reference to a document with an English translation already available here) or "documentation of Mujahadeen acts against the U.S., such as 'Documentation of the Destruction that Befell America' by Shayk Abd-al-Aziz al-Jarbu", (a non-al Qaeda sponsored translation may be underway here) along with "other pieces the brothers deem worthy."
As an example of the sort of video material the group should provide, the author suggests "Video of attacks on US foot patrols with the caption 'Operation against the sons of the US people whom Bush cast into the fire of war against the Muslims'."
What this means is: the online jihad is only beginning. We can expect to see new and more effective forms of Islamist propaganda. The hard-edged propaganda is good for rallying and inspiring their troops, but they already have that out there in droves. YouTube and other video hosting networks are infested with the stuff. I anticipate we'll see more of the Qana-style "softer" propaganda designed to evoke sympathy with the "victims" of "Western imperialism."
I don't care much about the hard-edged stuff. They can spread that all they want, as far I'm concerned. In fact, we at Jawa Report even help them on occasion. That hardcore jihadi shit scares the bejeezus out of normal, rational people, and rightly so. Fear can be a good thing, so long as it's the kind of fear that makes you want to get out of your seat and do something and not the kind of fear that makes you want to bow toward Mecca.
I say it's the "softcore" propaganda that we need to be concerned about. Islamicist music videos, cartoons, shahid emo-porn, etc. will become more prevalent with time, and that's the stuff that has a potential to have an effect. This is a multi-front war, and success in the propaganda war is, as always, going to be crucial to victory in the war as a whole. For decades we've been losing the propaganda war--mostly because we refused to accept that we were even in one. Our enemies are today reaping the fruit of our earlier propaganda failures. With a effort, we can uproot the noxious weeds that bear this nasty fruit. All it takes is the will to do it.

If you look at the Iraq war videos on You Tube, you will find that about 75% of them are posted by U.S. and British troops, including many that show a great deal of death and destruction, and are soundtracked with death metal jams.
Does this mean that U.S. troops are propagandists too?
I certainly don't like seeing jihadists post their videos of car bombings and attacks on our troops on the Internet, and many of their videos are grotesque and meant primarily for propaganda, but this is a war in the video age. Let's face a cold, hard fact: Both sides are feeding the beast.

Yes, there's a ton of misinformation on YouTube, but it looks like some truth is still getting through.
I was encouraged to see that the top 3 videos are coming from the right point of view. Wafa Sultan is, of course, nothing short of devastatingly awesome. Video number 4 is some pro-Islamic stuff. Video number 5, from The Daily Show, is far from pro-Islam. Video number 6 is shootout footage shot from the jihadi side. Video number 7--well, you know where that one's coming from. The last three are pro-Islamic vids.
1
"But when men have realized that
time has upset many fighting faiths, they may come to believe even more
than they believe the very foundations of their own conduct that the
ultimate good desired is better reached by free trade in ideas—that the
best test of truth is the power of the thought to get itself accepted
in the competition of the market, and that truth is the only ground
upon which their wishes safely can be carried out. That at any rate is
the theory of our Constitution." -Associate JusticeOliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. (joined by Associate Justice Louis Brandeis) dissenting in Abrams v. U.S.

When there is competition allowed in the islamic market of ideas, get back to me, Rhyleh. The particular quote you reference assumes that there is a free market of ideas available to all, hardly the situation in place in the islamic world. As for a constitution, they use the koran. I wonder, have any of you liberals and leftists given any thought to the implications of an islamic society?

There is free speech in Turkey, and dissent is tolerated in Iran. Not that I ever said that I agreed with Islamic government, because I don't. I favor secular government. BTW, the most repressive Islamic state is Saudi Arabia, the government there being backed by the US.
What do you know of Islamic history? Did you know that Iran was a democracy before the US assassinated the Iranian president and replaced him with the Shah? Look it up on Wikipedia.
Posted by: Rhyleh at October 09, 2006 03:17 PM (Q+ifs)

So you believe everything you read on Wikipedia, right? And I beg to differ on free speech in Turkey. It's free so long as it doesn't insult Islam. Ask the lady on trial right now in Turkey for writing a book that some deem insulted Islam. Ask the Kurds, or better yet, ask the Armenians. And dissent is tolerated in Iran? Are you drunk or high? That is one of the most outlandish statements I have ever heard on this blog, or any other blog for that matter.

The YouTube Jihad : Download "First, They Came For..."
UPDATE 4 :In some of the comments here and elsewhere, I've heard the suggestion that we just turn around and walk away from YouTube's jihadi cesspool. I hope most of you realize that walking away from this would be exactly the wrong thing to do. By all means, we should be setting up accounts on "friendly soil" and uploading our videos there. At the same time, we all need to start learning to stand our ground, and this is as good a time as any. Walking away from a fight is always the easiest path. Walking away is often the wrong path. This is a fight worth fighting and a fight worth winning. Walking away from this fight with the YouTube jihadis would represent one more retreat of freedom from a public forum. Sure, you can back down, here. And then tomorrow, you will be asked to back down somewhere else. If you won't take a stand here, will you ever take a stand?
Michelle's banned video "First, They Came For..." can be downloaded here.
UPDATE 3 : A version of Michelle's video with the "BANNED by YouTube" banner attached is available for download here.
I encourage all of you with YouTube accounts to download the file and post it to YouTube. You know you want to. After all, it's now officially subversive.
UPDATE 2 : I've added a corner banner .gif with a transparent channel. Depending on your blog software, you may be able to add this to the corner of your web page--if you were so inclined. Depending on your video editing software, you may be able to overlay this on a banned video:
I added it to "Rocket Ride" and uploaded it here as an example (click on image for video):
UPDATE 1 : Have you been banned? Michelle provides us with a badge of honor.

I'm making my stand. I'm posting as many comments as the system lets me and friends and colleague bloggers will do the same as time permits. Malkin has her comments disabled, so we can't have our war there. But please, have at it on my video before it gets pulled. War it out with the attackers in the comments section, it won't last long. I knocked Phelps down the Hill at the University of Kansas once. I now call it "Bowling for Hillary", as she was speaking at the bottom of the hill. The account of it is on my blog somewhere, but I'm like the absent-minded professor. Never can find a thing.
Anyway, it was him or me. He was almost knocking me down. I claim self defense. But serves him right for prancing around in tight biker shorts in front of the very gays insulted by his sign. He did roll for quite a ways, actually. Darned steep hill. Phelps MUST BE IGNORED. It is imperative, and how we diminished him locally when I was at KU. It worked. Now he gets publicity and it hacks me off. He's just a nobody from Topeka, but he gave me my 15 minutes of Freshman fame.
He also insulted my Jayhawks. No one insults my Jayhawks, man. That means war. Unless you insult the football team, they kind of deserve it.
There is a difference between propaganda films and just posting what's really going on. My video and "Rocket Ride" were in fact propaganda, but the jihadi videos inciting violence are beyond freedom of expression. That's a whole nother ball o wax.

Al Manar Live Feed From Atlanta GAUPDATE: Down! We get shiite done!! If the link below comes back online, let us know. The FBI--thanks to your complaints--is also now on the case!
--------------------
Hezballah’s TV station al-Manar is using a US server in Atlanta, GA today to broadcast its live internet feed. The hosting provider is Global Net Access. Remember Hezballah is designated as a terrorist organization by the United States and it is against the law to provide them services to distribute their propaganda here. I have the hosting information below as well as the complaint and abuse email addys and phone numbers.
OrgName: Global Net Access, LLC
OrgID: GNAL-2
Address: 55 Marietta St, NW
Address: Suite 1720
City: Atlanta
StateProv: GA
PostalCode: 30303
Country: US
UPDATE II: Several people have already notified the FBI about this. But any case against those that broke the law could take some time. In the interim, be sure to keep pressure on the hosting company. The hosting company may not have known what it's servers were being used for, but they no longer have that excuse.
Update IV by Howie: I can no longer access the link. It appears this link is dead now. We get sheeyat done!
Update V by Rusty:
Keep checking the link. If it comes back up, let us know. Pat yourselves on the collective back.
But taking terrorists off the internet is a lot like a game of whack-a-mole. At the very least, though, we can make sure American corporations are not enabling terrorists. We'll leave that for the French!
I pointed that out to the agent. Anyone can purchase server space
with a valid credit card and be up and running within a couple of
hours, if that. I'm sure the Atlanta FBI will handle the
situation with professionalism. I also put in a plug for the jawa.

Online Jihad Via YouTube
I'm not ready to blame YouTube just yet. A few videos I flagged over the last couple of days have disappeared. But, videos like this remain.
I also don't know how to stop YouTube, an American company, from allowing these videos. Boycott? YouTube is worldwide, a blogger uprising will have the same effect that the current boycott on Google is having.
I guess that the best I can do is ask that if you're surfing around YouTube, take a moment to search for terms like "jihad," "kafir," and the like and flag jihadi videos if you find them.
It's probably just wishful thinking, but, maybe, just maybe, YouTube is sharing what they know about the Islamotards posting this crap with the proper authorities.

A few months ago, several of us anti-jihadist users just started sending out bulletins and messages to other users on YouTube about certain videos or all of the videos of a certain user. We would then "flag" all of these videos for inappropriate content in at least two categories and then they would usually get pulled off.
Just a few days ago I was informed by some YouTubers that a few of the Jihadi charmers who were leaving such nice comments on my profile page there had already been suspended. They'll show back up with new accounts I'm sure, but at least YT does pay a LITTLE bit of attention. Just think, I had to do a bunch of videos with my alter ego and her extremely realistic looking wig just to mock one chick on YT. The song I wrote and sang directly for her got yanked in 30 minutes. However, several videos of me acting stupid and shaking my butt for the camera, smacking it and screaming, "It's all about butts on YouTube!" were perfectly A-OK for the site.
To recap, YouTube is WEIRD. But German chicks CAN tell you there where on EBAY you can buy the underwear they're dancing in in their videos. Er, I mean, YouTube is WEIRD.

That's right, Leatherneck, I forgot! This is usually a pretty funny time of the year - hundreds of these idiots trilling and ullulating like baboons, whomping themselves into a frenzy, and stampeding like a herd of antelope, hucking rocks at stuff. Usually good to cull the herd quite a bit, and just as funny as anything on America's Funniest Videos!
Ahh, better get the popcorn and beer ready...

No problem, JJ... my No.1 (and only) is a freshman at UNT in Denton, and actually has the weekend off. That's one reason we have ribeyes of our own, he is supposed to come home for the first time in about 3 weeks (with his laundry in tow, no doubt). He's a music major, but plays a lead trumpet position in the GREEN BRIGADE (you have to say it that way). The Mean Green handed SMU their heads on a platter last weekend, so we are still celebrating.
Have a great time, and hope your son does well and stays healthy!

Eric, we won by the score of 26-18, making our record 3-0, and solidifying our #2 ranking in our classification. Strangely enough, my #2 son and his best friend want to go to UNT in Denton. I am much more familiar with it as North Texas State. My #1 son went to a football camp there sponsored by one of the Dallas Cowboys 5 or so years ago, and I remember it very well, especially the dorm rooms. They were spartan, to say the least. My #1 son is a junior in college, and I have an 11-year old daughter. And thanks for the well wishes.

Congrats on the win, JJ! Unfortunately, my son's HS lost in the final minute to Hebron, 23-20 (of course he was there to see his old band buddies, so didn't matter much to him). UNT (old "NTSU") plays Tulsa today, and they were spanked like 54-2 last year, so we're hoping the SMU momentum helps them out there. Of course, unlike HS, the band doesn't go on the road with them (except for the Sun Belt Bowl), so he's relaxing this weekend, and watching his old man as he works magic on the grill!
Man, those dorms are sparse, aren't they?? His is in Clark Hall, and I had to run his full size 88-key Yamaha protable grand up to him, so he wouldn't have to rent a practice room. I shudder to think how it gets stored away when he's not using it...
Take care, enjoy the weekend...

greyrooster, while I agree that's what he was implying he didn't actually say that. He said something about they would "help" Iran.
In the past, in reference to Cuba he said he would cut off our oil if we attacked Castro in any way. I tend to think that's what would actually happen with Iran as well.
Chavez is batshit insane but, he's not stupid (far from it unfortunately). He wouldn't enter into open war with the US. Even he knows he'd get his ass handed to him.

And thank you Jawa readers for raising a stink about this. Sometimes it just takes a little noise to grab the attention of those in charge. Frankly, most customer service agents just aren't prepared to handle complaints about terrorist websites.
However, it would be nice if corporate America would do their jobs and police themselves rather than forcing us to do it for them.

This is really a good thing. I am really getting sick that they have this opportunity to freely distribute their filth across the Internet. The government should have a team for this with hackers that kill a site as soon as it pops up!
This site for example: www.terroristmedia.com. ( go to the forum section) Although not a pure Islamic website. Both sides discuss there (in it self a interesting concept) but they use it also to distribute the latest Islamic propaganda. And there are many websites similar out there! I think it’s one of those boundaries; they do not spread hate but there is this stinky smell of support! Our side seems to do the same with our video’s to try to level it out (You can download “The War Tapes†from there). But nevertheless it makes me sick to see these compilations of how successful they are with IED’s and VBIED’s.
I would say bring it down.

I'm not a net guru, but I'd say it wouldn't be hard for someone to hack a backdoor into their servers and copy all their info. But then, this is the government that gave us Amtrak, so it's most likely that they don't even know about the sites.

Hezbollah Hackers Attack Jew
Apparently all you need for Hezbollah to hack your website is to have a Jewish sounding name. Boston Herald:
A computer hacker flooded a Gloucester theater company’s Web site with grotesque pictures of dead babies and pro-Hezbollah messages apparently because the company’s founder and director is named Israel.
As an act of solidarity, from now on call us The Jewish Jawa Review.
Two: Yet another example of a 7th century mindset exploiting 21st century technology, which Allah didn't seem fit to bestow upon them with the knowledge to invent. And these people think they're going to rule the world?

The number one website of Hizballah is now hosted at two locations, a server in Brooklyn, New York, and one in Montreal, Canada. Having said that, the real corporate villain in this story is eNom. Operating as name-services.com, eNom is knowingly providing DNS and domain registrar service to Hizballah. The DNS service is what allows Hizballah to rapidly move this site from place to place. eNom needs to be held to account.
The notion that a U.S. company is providing services to an organization that has murdered around 300 citizens is digusting.

India Hosts Hizballah's Websites, TVFrom the Ministry of Irony. Remember India? The country that blocks this website and others calling them dangerous. Well apparently if you are a terrorist organization with some rupies you can still host your website there.
Via Aaron at Internet Haganah: The big news today is the return to the internet of the web site of Hizballah's al-Manar TV, still hosted in India. So much for Indian calls for no compromise in the war on terrorism...
Go read the rest because Aaron has complete information on all Hizballah's websites. For our newer readers from India who are able to skirt the ban. Get busy and take action to purge this terrorist website from your nation. Americans use the talent you have and whine and bitch to high heaven. The rest of you, we can use all the help we can get. Oh the Irony is killing me.
Update : Several American Companies are also listed as providing various DNS services, mirror and satellite sites run by Hizballah.
Via Dread Pundit Bluto: Hizballah is number 14 on the State Department's current list of Foreign
Terrorist Organizations. I believe that means the US companies hosting
Hizballah websites are in violation of the law, which forbids providing
material resources to FTOs.
See excerpt from State and screen capture of FTO list in my update here:
On the other hand this is also not particularly surprising; the
terrorists (of all stripes) always use the openness and the patience of
democractic societies as tool to defeat democracy itself.

U.S. & Canadian Companies Aiding HezbollahA new study of official Hezbollah websites reveals that 91% of online business services provided to the terror organization are done through U.S. and Canadian companies. Hizballah has been designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the U.S. State Department.
The study finds that American companies provide 64% of all the services that the Hezballah sites require to stay online. 27% of the required services are provided by Canadian companies.
Except for al Qaeda, Hezbollah has killed more Americans than any other foreign terrorist organization. In 1983 the Iranian backed Islamist group killed 241 Americans in Bierut. In addition to 60 more Americans who were injured, 58 French soldiers were also killed in the car-bombing blast.
Three members of Hizballah, ‘Imad Mughniyah, Hasan Izz-al-Din, and Ali Atwa, are on the FBI’s list of 22 Most Wanted Terrorists for the hijacking in 1985 of TWA Flight 847 during which a US Navy diver was murdered. Elements of the group were responsible for the kidnapping of Westerners in Lebanon, including American Terry Anderson who was held hostages for nearly 6 years.
Hizbollah's main website alghaliboun.net, is hosted by FastServers, Inc., located in Chicago, IL. Another of Hizbollah's official websites, moqawama.net, is hosted either by a NY, NY company dnsvr.com or a Green Bay, WI corporation Netsonic.
The Hizbollah 'charity' aljarha.org is hosted by Edmonton, Alberta's Tera-byte Dot Com.
These are just a few of the dozens of examples of U.S. and Canadian companies providing services to the terror organization.
Is it a crime to do business with Hezbollah? I dunno, but it should be.
The business services provided by these companies aid Hizbullah in keeping an online presence. And as we have noted dozens of times in the past, terrorist propaganda, training, recruiting, and planning is increasingly being facilitated by the internet.
It's time to take the online jihad seriously. A difficult task, but far less difficult than, say, physically disrupting terrorist cells.
Aaron at Haganah Internet has the full report here. Lot's more U.S. and Canadian companies doing business listed at link.
1

The problem for most hosting providers that offer dedicated servers running control panels, is that they do not have day to day interaction with the servers, or really see what domains are parked on them, so most won't even know they're hosting pro-terrorism sites, that's why notifying the host is important too.
That said, if they're taking payments from the middle-east for services they should investigate if the server is being used by cyber-jihadi's.

How many people around the world is the United States government guilty of killing since it has been in existence. Most Americans are ignorant of the history of their own country. Most Americans do not realize that big coorporations control their government and the policies that it makes both nationally and internationally. Instead of watching propaganda on the American coorporate controlled government news programs, Americans need to be heading to the nearest bookstore to get some books that will give them the true facts about what is going on in the world. None the wars have anything to do with race or religion. They are all the profits that companies can make off the backs of the average person no matter where they live in the world. Lockheed Martin is surely making a lot of money right now selling its war machinery to the highest bidder. These types of companies will sell to both sides fighting in a war. All they have to do is change their labels. Every God fearing person, no matter what religion they practice, should be concerned about how the world is being manipulated at the hands of just a few wealthy individuals who profit from the coorporations that control the American government and a few other governments around the world. I would be proud to be on the side of right any day. If you believe in God, take a stand. Stand up, speak out. Maybe we all need to join a Party of God and fight back against wrong. Martin Luther King once said, :An injustice anywhere is an injustice everywhere".
By the way, Why is Condaleeza Rice meeting other heads of state in Rome? Are we still under the Roman Empire? Are we still fighting the Crusades? I think we better get to some bookstores real quick and get some books that tell the truth about what is going on in the world. Maybe then we will learn who really is trying to control the world. As Malcom X once said, "If you haven't done the research, then you're not qualified to speak". You can financially support the right cause or financially support the wrong cause. If you want to stop the wrong things that are happening around the world, then support those who fight back against wrong in the name of God. Why continue to support big coorporations that kill people just to gain profits? America is a cooporate controlled government. Americans need to take their government back from the cooporations that control it. Why should we as Americans continue to let big coorporations shame the good name of our country? Why do we let our soldiers die for the sake of big coorporations?
For the respect of every man or woman who has given his or her life fighting in the name of the United States of America around the world, We Americans who really believe in God, no matter what religion we practice, need to stand up now and do something to take our government out of the hands of big coorprations. Who do you support, Hezbollah or the big coorporations that ruin the world?

Hezbollah Websites Down, TV Still Up
Al Manar, Hezbollah's TV station, was one of Israel's first targets. While the station was hit, it seemed to be on the air as of this morning. Either the attack was not as succesful as hoped, or al Manar was transmitting from a backup location.
You can watch Hezbullah's terrorist TV station, al Manar here. Right now, they are showing a live shot of Beirut and playing a song which, curiously, has a chorus of "Allahu Akhbar" sung over and over.
But I'm sure religion has nothing to do with Hizbullah's--which means The Party of God-- beef with Israel.

For these filthy subhuman slave-trading pedophilic waste-of-oxygen waste-of-food terrorist brutes we Iranian Patriots have a name that subsumes all of them; I mean the whole bloody lot from Al-qaeda to Ahmadinezhad to Al-Zarqawi Hizbullah etc. etc.
The word is TAAZI (all three vowels are long vowels).
This word also includes their political supporters and their pinko-commie apologists. I have a special disdain for this last category.

Capital idea Howie!
Wouldn't your own American counter-terrorism outfits also be interested in information on these cyber-attackers?
I mean looking at the big picture, Turkey is a NATO member (God help us all) and at least some Turks have a vested interest in weeding out the Islamist terrorists in their country.
So, if your authorities are informed, hopefully they would in turn inform their counter-parts in Turkey.
Does this make sense?

Reads like you just don't Jews. That's ok. Because I dislike Muslims..AND...Islam.
Since it's claimed that Islam created Algebra (which is probably true, the only thing worse than having your head sawed off with a dull knife is Algebra), I present this equation to Walid to see if he can solve it:
Lighter fluid x kindling + firepit in backyard > The Holy Quran + digital camera = ?

The Muslims learned Algebra from the Hindus (and the Hindu numeral system).
All Islamic achievements in Algebra and Trig were by the conqured Babylonians in the 8th century, before Islam snuffed out their collective initiative to learn. Most of these Muslim achievements in learning were by apostates of Islam.

Keep'a Knockin' But You Can't Come In
Hm, looking at the comments of my last two posts, it appears that some dirty little bugger tried to hack the Jawa Report.
Fighting Internet Terrorists
NZ Bear is attempting to set up a system of fighting DDoS attacks. As you may already know, The Jawa Report is constantly being attacked by pimple-faced wannabe jihadis who are too lazy or cowardly to strap on a suicide vest and attack our beloved mu server located deep in the heart of the Isle of Niue. Could this be the answer? I dunno, but it's certainly generating some interesting discussion.
1
There are already dozens of solutions to preventing DDoS attacks. But you have to pay for it. One good way to avoid it is to keep your blog hosted with an "Akamaized Host" such as Yahoo or Google.
Posted by: BelchSpeak at July 10, 2006 12:50 PM (UyFYg)
2
"carp" load balanced servers are excellent for availability, problem is of course that you would only be distributing the attack across the server pool.
It would depend on the nature of the DDOS, is it a syn flood from spoofed IP's you could use a firewall that drops non-routable IP's, blocks that are reserved by IANA, other operating systems allow dropping packets to closed ports [tcp/udp blackhole=2] even then you're looking only to stop around 8-10% of packets with invalid source IP's.
Unfortunately stopping DDOS with hardware, and architecture costs a lot of money, there are hardware ingress filtering devices, designed to withstand DDOS, however they are thousands of dollars, just to protect a 100mbit circuit.
Posted by: davec at July 10, 2006 12:54 PM (voZp6)

I have some ideas along these lines, but I think I'm a bit farther out than NZ Bear's system. Why simply say "Go to some other blog" when you don't have to? I think the best idea is to make the blog survive and operate as normally as possible in the midst of a DDoS attack.
This is easily doable; we have the technology. Making it cheap is going to be the hardest part.

An "Akamaized Host" is going to give you a huge bandwidth bill, those hosts use a "blended" carrier solution with around 5+ ISP's, and use proprietary devices [like FlowControl™] that do route table optimization of traffic -- that sort of bandwidth is going to cost you around $50-100 per mbit -- as some DDOS are cable of dropping a 100mbit circuit easily, as most people do not own a circuit, and pay a price above the true carrier cost, a substained DDOS attack can create excess bandwidth bills of two-three thousand dollars, easily, in a very short time.

call me stupid but why was the web not designed with DSoS attacks in mind ?
Posted by: rob at July 10, 2006 02:28 PM (QpkBe)
6
rob:
because the way the specifications that determine how the web works, predated any of the abuse.
Just like when SMTP [mail protocol] was built, there were no spammers, just about all spam control is third-party addons, and even the latest mail servers do only very basic tests to check for spam, some of the specifications need a major rewrite to fix the problems that are being abused.

A DDOS attack uses the Web's strengths to flood a target website, thus shutting it down. So in a sense the Web was designed with DDOS in mind, but the DDOS attacker is exploiting the underlying protocol as well as the distributed nature of the Web to attack a host.

Michelle notes a post to the blog of University of Arizona professor Deb Frisch which takes responsibility for a group of very nasty comments to Jeff's blog. She's apparently resigned from the University after being publicly connected to the comments. Apparently, it remains to be seen whether Professor Frisch has any connection to the DDOS attack.
Having recently come back from a DDOS attack on The Jawa Report, I'm sure this issue is near and dear to the hearts of many Jawas.
Jeff's site weathered another DOS attack a couple of weeks ago, so it's possible this wasn't connected with Frisch at all.
Either that or her hacker friends have had it in for Jeff for a long time.

Yes, We Can Feel The Love...
There's been a huge outpouring of support for the Return of the Jawa. I'm guessing all the Jawas are humbled by this show of support.
To translate for any Turkish jihadi morons in the audience, the aptals and ahmaks who hit the Jawa Report have managed to do nothing more than make this blog quite newsworthy. What this means is, the Jawa Report's exposure, including but not limited to the world-famous Karnival of the Koran Krapping, is almost guaranted to be higher after the goat-stuffers' little stunt than it was before. Good move. Way to go, Sherlocks. I'm guessing your mothers dropped you a lot when you were children. Do you think your moon god will still love you when he realizes you're a bunch of morons? I wouldn't count on it.
At any rate, given the scope of the support out there, I'm sure I've missed some, but here are a few of those who deserve gratitude (and traffic): more...
