Zawahiri Mocks Democrat's Surrender Bill (Updated, Bumped With Video)

zawahiri0507.jpgNo matter what words Harry Reid uses, redeployment, withdrawl, timetable, al-Qaeda see's it as surrender. It's a damn shame too that the Democrats handed Zawahiri this propaganda just as al-Qeada in Iraq's back is against the wall and our Apache crews are making short work of the Taliban's spring offensive.

Via ABCNEWS: In a new video posted today on the Internet, al Qaeda's number two man, Ayman al Zawahiri, mocks the bill passed by Congress setting a timetable for the pullout of U.S. troops in Iraq.

"This bill will deprive us of the opportunity to destroy the American forces which we have caught in a historic trap," Zawahiri says in answer to a question posed to him an interviewer.

Continuing in the same tone, Zawahiri says, "We ask Allah that they only get out of it after losing 200,000 to 300,000 killed, in order that we give the spillers of blood in Washington and Europe an unforgettable lesson."

Laura Mansfield has more and a copy available for download here.

Update: Video added, below the fold. Note the message is dated 04/28/07. That date is included in the original filename as well.

Update: Higher quailty version added below. more...

Senate Hearings on Cyber Jihad Today (Bonus: Buh Bye Jihadis)

The U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee will hold hearings this morning to examine the internet as a portal to violent Islamist extremism. An important topic, and one we regularly address here.

In related news, it looks like the online followers of Sheikh Nasir al-Fahd, the jailed Saudi cleric who issued a famous fatwa granting al Qaeda the right to use nuclear weapons against the U.S., are having a bad day.

Just doing our part, folks. Let me also thank the good people at atspace.com for their quick response and good business practices.

Wordpress Still Hosting Convicted Terrorist's (and others) Websites

A quick follow up on that earlier report on terrorist websites being hosted by Wordpress. In that earlier report, I noted that the San Francisco based Wordpress Inc. was hosting the personal website of indicted terrorist Daniel Joseph Maldonado (aka, Daniel al Jughaifi). In fact, I was wrong. Aaron from Internet Haganah e-mailed with the good news that Maldonado pleaded guilty to training with al Qaeda.

That makes Wordpress guilty of hosting the website of a convicted terrorist.

Media Newswire:

A United States citizen, who trained to fight jihad along with elements of al Qaeda to establish an Islamic state in Somalia, has been convicted of receiving training from a foreign terrorist organization, Don DeGabrielle, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Texas, Kenneth L. Wainstein, Assistant Attorney General for the National Security Division of the Department of Justice, and Roderick Beverly, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Houston Division, announced today.

At a hearing this afternoon, Daniel Joseph Maldonado, a.k.a. Daniel Aljughaifi, 28, pleaded guilty to the sole charge in an Information filed on March 30, 2007 and unsealed today. During the hearing, Maldonado admitted he had traveled from Houston, TX to Africa in November 2005 and then on to Somalia in December 2006 to join the Islamic Courts Union ( ICU ) and elements of Al Qaeda to fight “jihad” against the Transitional Federal Government to establish an independent Islamic State in Somalia.

Al Qaeda in Russia Loves Google (*Bumped*)

Bumped, because I'm really busy today. Oh, and really pissed at Google.

The Russian arm of the worldwide al Qaeda jihad network has chosen Google as their propaganda enablers of choice. "The Nuruddin Media Islamic Network" appears to be a media front for the Islamic Jamaat of Dagestan Shariat---al Qaeda in the Russian Cuacuses, for all intents and purposes.

A recent press release by the group at the closely allied terror supporters of the Kavkaz Center (hosted in Sweden) states their purpose (this is their own poorly translated version):

Our primary task is liberation of the Muslim land from the Russian occupation and the construction of Shariah state. Our purposes and tasks, in contrast to the kafir's political programs, are clear and intelligible to any Muslim. Each, who thinks himself as Muslim and he desires the establishment of the Word of Allah on Dagestani land, desires to live according to the Shariah Law, free on the validity, established by Allah Almighty, joins our ranks....

Jihad (battle) on the way of Allah is responsibility of each Muslim in the case of seizing even span of the Muslim's land....

Also according to Islam it is possible to kill those, who resist the call of Muslims and prevent the introduction of the Laws of Allah, who helps the enemy: in a word whether, by the matter whether, by money or by weapon.

Their official website is here (hosted in France).

It appears that Jamaat Shariat, true to the al Qaeda franchise form, has formed a media production front, Nuruddin Media. Al Qaeda has a media production company called as Sahab and al Qaeda in Iraq (The Islamic State of Iraq), not to be outdone by corporate headquarters, has al Furqaan media. Print publications, on the other hand, are handled by the Global Islamic Media Front (GIMF).

And, where has al Qaeda in Dagestan chosen to host their propaganda? On Google owned blogspot.com, of course!

nuruddinmedia.jpg

http://www.nuruddin-info.blogspot.com/

Not satisfied with a single Google hosted propaganda outlet, the online jihadis at Nuruddin Media are using several blogspot addresses:

http://qoqaz-forever.blogspot.com/
http://qoqaz.blogspot.com/
http://kavkazvideo.blogspot.com/
http://nmedia4.blogspot.com/
http://nqoqaz.blogspot.com/
http://qoqaz-jihad.blogspot.com/
http://qoqaz-tv.blogspot.com/

They also appear to have about half a dozen Wordpress hosted websites as well. But my experience with the folks at Wordpress is that they take down these types of websites within a few days once notified. Google? Not so much. Even when we tell Google that a website is an al Qaeda front they normally reply with a form letter about how they do not "censor" content.

I imagine that had Google been around during WWII they would have thought it their civic duty to rebroadcast Tokyo Rose to the heartland of America.

And just to show how "edgy" and "ironic" the onlilne jihadis can be, the website is said to have been designed by "Irhab studio".

That's real funny. Irhab means "terrorism" in Arabic.

Oh, you're chance to e-mail the webmaster behind al Qaeda's front in Russia's Dagestan region:

The online jihadis, like their real world counterparts, did a little damage to Internet Haganah over the weekend. Aaron reports though, that the site is back online and fully operational.

British Islamic Website: The Virtues of Killing the Non-Believer

Here's an update on the "moderates" who run the Birmingham Central Mosque and their connection to al Qaeda supporters. After my initial post showing the website a) had pro-jihadi propaganda on it, including literature written by Osama bin Laden; and b) was registered to one of the largest mosques in Britain-- the literature I linked to mysteriously disappeared from the website.

But, they left up other literature, including one pamphlet encouraging Muslims living in the West to attack the kafir (unbelievers) wherever they lived. That literature has now vanished. Don't worry, we have screenshots should the authorities in the U.K. ever get off their duffs and do something. Unlike in the U.S., this kind of stuff is a crime in Britain. At least, in theory it is.

So, is the website still promoting terrorism? You bet it is. I know I'm going to regret this, but the idiots leave their directories open. Which means that although they took down the links to most of this stuff from their main pages, it's still there on their servers waiting for potential jihadis to download it.

bakri_mohammed_website_birmingham_mosque_screenshot.jpg

This 181 page book on jihad is filled with insightful chapters on "the peaceful inner struggle of jihad" such as:

bakri_mohammed_website_birmingham_mosque_screenshot2.jpg

And even slightly more terrifying, especially for the British who have large numbers of Muslims in their armies-- the vast majority of whom are serving honorably and must bear the disgusting stigma of this garbage coming from a website linked to "moderate Muslim leaders" who pretend to speak for them:

bakri_mohammed_website_birmingham_mosque_screenshot3.jpg

Website with Links to Birmingham Mosque Takes Down bin Laden Book, Still Supporting Violent Jihad

After exposing Omar Bakri Mohammed's latest website as being registered to the same address as one of the largest Islamic centers of worship in England--The Birmingham Central Mosque-- several links have vanished. A free download of "39 Ways to Serve and Participate in Jihad" and "A Declaration of War" written by Osama bin Laden are no longer there. That's strange. It's almost as if they're afraid of something.......

Hey, numbnuts, looks like you forgot to take down all the links that show that you support violent jihad against your own countrymen. Which, last time I checked, was a crime in Great Britain. It's kind of what got your last three groups (al-Muhajiroun; al-Ghuraba; and The Saved Sect) banned. more...

U.S. Military Now Engaging In Cyberwarfare Against Online Jihadis?

cyber_jihad_denied.jpgIs the U.S. military now on an offensive war footing against the cyber-jihadis and cyber-terrorists? Maybe, but Magic 8-ball says YES. As you know, I've been advocating--no more than just advocating, agitating--for precisely the offensive strategy since day one. And you know what? People read this blog.

What kind of people? Top men. Sorry, whenever I get excited I break into dialogue from Raiders of the Lost Ark.

In any event, those top men also read Internet Haganah. And Aaron's agitation far precedes our own. And the strategy, at least in theory, seems to go back at least to 2003.

There are few times when we at The Jawa Report get so stoked that we, literally, break into the robot dance. Okay, so it's just me who is that lame, but we are all excited about this news that our official Iranophobe "John Doe" dug up this morning.

I still am of the opinion that, organizationally, the decentralized nature of the cyber-jihad requires a decentralized fix---"cyber-privateering" as it were. But with the right leadership, the right values, the right equipment, the right operators, and the right sized set of cajones, the "cyber-scorched earth" approach could work.

Keep your fingers crossed and remember to smile when you call me Dr. William Tecumseh Sherman, partner. more...

Annoying Yet Hopeful Sign that Google is Learning

Okay, in column "A" we have loads of evidence that both of Google's two main self-publishing platforms, Youtube & Blogger (.blogspot), are absolutely crawling with the vermin that call themselves the "internet mujahidin", but who we just like to call "butt-munchers". Every single complaint we've ever sent into both Blogger or Youtube about the use of their servers for spreading violent jihadi propaganda has been---literally---ignored.

No, more than ignored. It's almost like Google is proud to be hosting propaganda designed to garner support for, train, and finance terrorists. A smug holier than thou attitude about how tolerant they are and how freedom of speech trumps lesser concerns like, you know, mass murder at the hands of terrorists.

But, finally, it looks like we have an entry in column "B". That was the heretofore empty tally of Google taking down jihadi propaganda.

The other day al Qaeda leader Abu Yahia al-Libi released a high quality English-subtitled (no doubt the work of Adam Yahiye Gadahn, aka "Azzam al-Amreki") video (may be downloaded here courtesy of Laura Mansfield). The video was interesting because it included a plea from the escaped detainee for unity between various terrorist factions in Iraq. Specifically for The Army of Ansar al-Sunnah, the Islamic Army in Iraq, and the Jaish al Mujahideen--all of whom have refused to join the al Qaeda umbrella and front group "The Islamic State of Iraq"-- to get with the program. A sure sign that al Qaeda is worried about the offensive in Iraq. Very worried. (See Stratfor's excellent synopsis and analysis here).

So, Howie thought there would be some value in posting the video so all of you could see it. The problem? Google rejected the video. Which is kind of irritating. But, at the same time, a hopeful sign.

You see, they post these videos in order to discourage us (a common theme is that we can't win in Iraq or Afghanistan), to encourage support for their cause, to recruit, to train (some videos are actual "how to" guides), and even to raise money.

We post these videos in an effort to use their propaganda videos for our purposes. We think, given the proper context, these videos are actually pretty good at showing our Islamist enemies as the barbaric fools that they are.

So, even if we are a little ticked that the new al-Libi video was rejected by Google, perhaps this is a good sign that they are finally cracking down on the internet jihadis. At least, we hope so.

Parting advice from Kim Jong Il on the Jawa Report's online counterterrorism strategy.

Jihadi Sockpuppets Posing as Antiwar Vets

Informed Jawa Report readers have known that jihadis often pose as "Iraq War veterans" who are now against the war. It looks like the strategy is spreading. MEMRI:

Islamist Website Instructs Mujahideen in Using Popular U.S. Web Forums to Foster Anti-War Sentiment among Americans

“Invent Stories About American Soldiers You Have [Allegedly] Personally Known”

“Obviously, you should post your contribution… as an American… You should correspond with visitors to this forum, [bringing to their attention] the frustrating situation of their troops in Iraq… You should invent stories about American soldiers you have [allegedly] personally known (as classmates… or members in a club who played baseball and tennis with you) who were drafted to Iraq and then committed suicide while in service by hanging or shooting themselves…”

“Also, write using a sad tone, and tell them that you feel sorry for your [female] neighbor or co-worker who became addicted to alcohol or drugs… because her poor fiancé, a former soldier in Iraq, was paralyzed or [because] his legs were amputated… [Use any story] which will break their spirits, oh brave fighter for the sake of God…”

The real question, though, is why do the jihadis need sockpuppets when the American Left is so willing to do their work for them? Allahpundit has much more on this important and little recognized aspect of the online jihad. Pay special attention to his notes on Youtube.

In any event, you'll remember the now not-so infamous case of "Lee Tucker", which is a good illustration of the stategy. The jihadis of The Islamic Army in Iraq, to this day, have a website dedicated to a soldier who "recorded his thoughts on why the war was wrong" before he was killed and his flash drive, filled with anti-war rhetoric, was "posted to the internet". They also made a high production value propaganda video out of it. Of course, Lee Tucker is alive, well, and not anti-war. But that doesn't stop the IAI from posting their propaganda. To this day, their website dedicated to "Lee's Life for Lies" remains open.

Two Jihadi Webmasters Busted

Via Anmdrokos International: Saragozza, 14 March (AKI) - A Spanish man has been arrested in the northeastern town of Zaragoza on suspicion of promoting terrorism on the Internet. A Moroccan citizen was also arrested Wednesday in an unspecified Spanish location during an ongoing anti-terror operation by the Civil Guard which says it may lead to further arrests. The 31-year-old Spaniard and the 23-year-old Moroccan - both male - are allegedly the webmasters of the Spanish jihadist website Al-Andalus Islamiya which publishes messages supporting and justifying Islamist terrorism.

New MPJ Category!

That’s right! In our quest to totally foul up TJR while Rusty is on vacation, Vinnie and I have added a new category. While working on this email a terrorist thread I noticed just how much stuff we have on Omar Bakri Muhammad.

Omar is a radical cleric who has been linked to al-Qaeda and other terror organizations and plots.

Here are a few examples.

(Audio) British Cleric Encourages Muslims to Behead Hostages: Birmingham Connection.

Exiled Muslim Cleric Behind London Protest Calling for Pope's Death.

Bakri Celebrates British Deaths.

When compiling these I have to get the post title and then google that to get the url, quite a pain in the arse. So, to make my life easier, our Editor in Chief, Vinnie added a new category for me. Without further delay I present to you the new category:

Omar The Goat Humping Bakri Muhammad

Great name huh? I figure it goes right along with the spirit and intent of MPJ. It will take some time to get all the posts moved under that category. Maybe forever, but until that time we will work diligently to accumulate all the posts on old goat humper into this one place. I’ve added a few already. You can access MPJ categories on the left sidebar.

Also to update Jawa readers on this post

The same server that contains Omar, The Goat Humping, Bakri Muhammad’s website also contains a number of Jihadi forums and websites. It has encryption, encryption hacking, hack tools, DDOS, various other worms and virus sites and a porn site. It is the remnants of a former ISP that specialized in carrying Jihadi websites and information. One of the websites was a favorite of the Madrid bombers.

I’m sure many of our British readers will be interested to know the same spew that resulted in the tube attacks is still being broadcast over the internet from Britain.

I’m not posting all the URLs for the sites due to the malicious software sites. But I can send them by request. I’ll try and keep you updated as best I can.

Hopefully these sites can be taken down and this provider found and prosecuted.

As a reminder of what the purpose of these sites are, here is a video of Omar, The Goat Humping, Bakri Muhammad talking about the UBL and the 7/7 London attacks before they happened.

Hat Tip: Glen.

Update: Heh

Islamist Websites Behind Georgia Motorist Death Threat Down

The Black Lion Blog, which first posted a death threat against a Georgia motorist for displaying a bumper sticker deemed offensive to Muslims, is now offline. Good riddance.

The "Join the Caravan" website, which also posted the death threat, also seems to be offline. Either that, or the exposure we gave them has forced them underground. I tried to visit their website earlier today and was taken, instead, to a Wordpress login page. Any one with a Wordpress account that can see if they've simply password protected their website?

Thanks to all those who have helped expose this story or tried to help in other ways.

UPDATE: Sith Master Vinnie & Allahakchew think they've set up password protection so that kafir like you and me won't see them making death threats and encouraging jihad.

Bill Introduced to Fight Online Jihad

An aide to Congressman Shuster sent me this press release. I guess Congress "encouraging" YouTube and other outlets to take down jihadi propaganda is a start. At least it's good to know that some in Congress get that the online jihad is a real danger.

But simply expressing outrage is not enough. In fact, the online jihad is part of the war, and as such, online jihadis should be treated as enemy combatants. As it is, they are rarely even treated as criminals. Better legislation would force corporations such as Google to cooperate in removing jihadi material.

However, sometimes corporations that feel threatened with impending federal legislation will self-police. It's a start.

Washington, D.C. - Yesterday, Congressman Bill Shuster (R-PA-09), a member of the House Anti-Terrorism Caucus, introduced legislation urging owners of video-trading websites like You Tube to take action to remove jihadi propaganda videos.

"The war against Islamic radicalism is both a shooting war and a battle of ideology. Our enemies understand that they cannot defeat us face to face on the battleground, so they have created a new battlefield on the Internet," Shuster said.

"Terrorists hope that by opening this new front, their view of the world will prevail. It is up to the owners and users of video-trading sites to remain vigilant and help to deny our enemies this victory," Shuster said.

Jihadi terrorist organizations have long understood the benefits of the Internet to spread their cause. Jihadi sites allow terrorists to fundraise and distribute propaganda. They also facilitate the radicalization, recruitment and training of prospective terrorists. The popularity, ease of use, and negligible cost of video-sharing websites like YouTube and LiveLeak have provided yet another channel for terrorists to spread their ideology of hate.

Terrorist organizations including Al-Qaeda have set up sophisticated media operations whose mission is to create and distribute jihadi propaganda and training materials on the Internet.

Shuster's legislation would express Congress' desire to see the corporate owners of video-sharing website take action to remove jihadi videos from their sites. Additionally, the legislation encourages website owners to cooperate with law enforcement if their sites users are found to participate in terrorism.

"I doubt that the American public in World War II would have accepted the major media outlets of the time distributing Nazi propaganda at face value," Shuster added. "Times have changed, media has evolved, but the fact remains - terrorists hope their supporters see these videos and are encouraged to attack Western interests. These videos aid the enemy and they must be confronted."

Muslim Websites Target Georgia Motorist for Death (sticky)

kill_them_all_let_allah_sort_them_out.jpg**sticky** scroll down for more recent posts
----------------
Two Islamic militant websties have called on Muslims to kill the driver of a Georgia registered vehicle displaying an offensive bumper sticker. On February 28 the "Black Lion" blog, a website run by two American Muslim who support violent jihad, posted the license plate number of a Gwinnett County, Georgia motorist displaying a bumper sticker which read, "Kill em all, let Allah sort em out.” A thinly veiled threat encouraging Muslims to find the driver and kill him was also posted.

Another Muslim offended, another death threat issued.

Jawa Report reader "Louise", who found the post, has contacted the Gwinnett County Chief of Police's office but says that they have not gotten back to her. Further, she reports that the person who took her call said, "what do you want me to do about it?" For starters, how about finding the person targetted for death and letting them know that their life may be in danger?!?! Then, how about contacting the FBI, just down the road in Atlanta, so they can open an
investigation!?!?

In the meantime, "The Black Lion" blog removed the death threat from their website.

However, another U.S. based militant Islamist website picked up the post and republished it. In a post celebrating the shooting down of an American helicopter in Iraq, a "Join the Caravan" author identified as "Mujahida3001" republishes the earlier threat made by "The Black Lion":

Another blogger who gets few hits per day has e-mailed me and told me of a truck he saw with a decal on it saying “Kill em all, let Allah sort em out.” He was kind enough to give me the license tag number, too. Georgia tag [tag number is shown in actual post] Gwinnett County

Just thought I’d share that with you.

This is baraa [enmity]. If he wants to repeat the quote of one of the crusader generals during the first crusades in Jerusalem, then no, I do not care about his safety. I care about his lack of it. He shouldn’t feel any security at all.

So, Muslims, do whatever you can get away with.

Take care and keep it militant. [emphasis mine]

The entire website is devoted to encouraging violent jihad against American citizens. Ironically, the website displays an image of a child wearing the uniform of Hezabollah right next to a post about "Why dirty Shia are not Muslim".

A whois search shows that "Join the Caravan" is hosted by an American company, Wordpress. It is registered to an address in Glendale Heights, Illinois.

The "Black Lion" blog is hosted by a subdivision of the California based internet giant, Google. In the past, Google's blogspot division have refused to take down websites supporting murder and violent jihad on the grounds of "free speech".

In the most recent post at "The Black Lion", the author praises the work of the al Qaeda front group, The Islamic State of Iraq, for murdering 18 Iraqis on a recent video posted to the internet.* The murders were allegedly in retaliation for a well publicized propaganda piece by al Qaeda that accuses Shia Iraqi soldiers of raping a Sunni woman.

Congratulations to the mujahideen who captured and killed the hostages from the apostate security forces of Iraq, in exchange for the rape of our sister Sabrine. 18 killed for one rape. ALLAHU AKBAR!
So, who is it that posted the original death threat at "The Black Lion"?

1) We know he is in Georgia.
2) One of the two authors of the blog recently created a scene at "a Chinese embassy in North America" and was threatened with arrest, but it appears he was merely kicked out. The author says he went into the embassy and "punked" them by using one of their computers to access "Chinese servers" and then started shouting out Free Tibet slogans.

But the author is no follower of the nonviolent Dalai Lama, instead he praises violent resistance to the Communist government ("This is because I hate Communism and atheism even more than I detest liberal democracies")--including suicide bombing ("which I do not advocate for anyone who has access to better weapons and attack methods") as an example for Muslims to follow.

So, if you're a Georgia motorist with a bumper sticker which Muslims might find offensive, beware!**

UPDATE: Patrick from Clarity and Resolve found the Google cache of the original death threat on Black Lion. It's identical to the one posted at Join the Caravan. Patrick just notified me that their not identical. Google cache didn't catch it this time.

I've taken a few snapshots of the webpages, just in case they take the threats down and pretend it never happened.

UPDATE II: Dan Riehl did some Googling on "Mujahida3001". You won't be surprised what he found.

UPDATE 3/08/07: Both websites now seem to be down. Perhaps we pwned them? more...

Finally Taking the Online Jihad Seriously?

Thanks to everyone who sent me a link to this CBS 60 Minutes post on the online jihad. UPDATE: Video here.

It would be nice if I really believed that the online jihad was being taken seriously. It's good to see that several of my fellow online crusaders are getting some attention. Among those featured in the 60 Minutes segment are Rita Katz of the SITE Institute and Aaron Weisburd of Internet Haganah.

It would be wise, though, if people were not only aware of the clear and present danger presented by the online jihadis, but that they would also listen to Aaron's advice on how to confront them.

As we've been saying for years, the online jihad is a war of perceptions. Methinks that our consistent message to that point is beginning to get through to the top brass. At least, Army Brigadier General John Custer of CENTCOM seems to get it. Now we'll have to see whether they are willing to take the next step: cyber warfare.

As of this writing, I am still under the impression that the powers that be conceive of the online jihad as a law enforcement activity. They are willing to view the cyber jihadis (occasionally, at least) as criminals. What they have not been willing to concede, to this point, is that they are armed illegal combatants.

While it may seem minor, it is an important distinction. Why? Because if the internet is 1) a field of battle and 2) propaganda on the internet is a weapon of war, then the strategy for confronting it must be military. The first rules of war are to 1) possess better weapons than the enemy and 2) control the battlespace.

As to point 1: is there really any doubt as to whether our geeks possess better internet skillz than the Islamists?

As to point 2: there has been no serious attempt to control the battlespace.

Instead, we treat the internet as a tool for detecting criminal activities. Which is something, I guess, but if one wishes to dominate in a war you can't pat yourself on the back each time we catch an individual cyber-jihadi who is about to become a real mujahideen. Because for each one we catch a hundred more are trained. So, the key is to take away the tool. The key is to shut them down before they recruit more mujahideen.

It's pre-9/11 think, really. Treating terrorism as a crime to be prosecuted after the fact. Treating the cyber-jihadis as criminals who must break a law before they are stopped.

It's really not that hard. Give a few of my friends legal indemnity and a few bucks and they'll systematically fight the online jihadis. And they'll win. more...

Kent State Jihad Professor's pro-al Qaeda Website Down

The pro-al Qaeda website for which Kent State Professor Julio "Assad'' Pino provided news stories to but "didn’t accept any ownership of it" is down. Soooo, sad. It's almost as if "the man" is trying to "censor" a website designed to train jihadis to kill Americans. Stupid the man, always trying to keep us down!

Fighting the Online Jihad

Some very important information for a) anyone and everyone in the online counterterrorism community b) anyone and everyone else.

First, a brief explanation about a subset of the online jihad--organized hacking cells--and why it is dangerous from a MEMRI research paper re-published yesterday in the Jerusalem Post:

The evidence presented here shows that electronic jihad is a form of cyber-warfare with ideological underpinnings and defined goals, which manifests in well-coordinated cyber-attacks....

An Islamist hacker explained the method as follows: "We contact... the server [which hosts the target website] before and after the assault, and threaten [the server admin] until they shut down the target website. [In such cases], the 'host' [i.e., server] is usually forced to shut down the website. The battle continues until the enemy declares: 'I surrender.'"

The Jawa Report is a frequent target of their efforts. But, as the article goes on to say, there is "a significant gap between the mujahideen's aspirations and their actual capabilities." In other words, mostly talk and bluster. Skillz? Not so much.

Second, Aaron from Internet Haganah plays mythbuster in his post, myth, reality and jihadist use of the internet:

Myth Number 1: jihadi web sites were primitive 'back in the day' but now they are oh so sophisticated, and the jihadists who operate those sites are likewise more adept....

[Myth busted]...the tools are more sophisticated, but the jihadis are the same arrogant, hot-headed fools they ever were.

Myth Number 2: you can get sites shut down, but they will just pop back up again.

[Myth busted] Of jihadi websites in operation in 2002 and 2003] At least 80% of those sites are deceased

Myth Number 3: maybe you can get sites shut down, but many more will magically pop up to replace them.

[Myth busted] This 'myth' is perhaps more properly termed an 'excuse for inaction'.

Read the rest. Especially the "What to do?" section at the end.

For a list of important jihadi forums in operation, today, see my good friend Vlad's memo to himself here.

Hamas Website Poll - Interesting results.

After Howie posted yesterday about the Hamas poll, I re-printed it and posted it as a bulletin on MySpace. The bulletin was quickly picked up, and re-posted by many others.
As of 6:00 PM (EST) yesterday, the poll had nearly 700 votes, with a margin of 2% FOR and 98% AGAINST, with 0% UNDECIDED

Yet today, at 1:20 PM (EST) the poll has these results:

Now mathematics is not my best subject, but it seems to me these numbers just don't add up!
I am deeply shocked to discover Hamas would tamper with a poll to get their desired results! This should be reported to the United Nations immediately!
Please note the dripping sarcasm.

Islamic Radicals Continue to Use MySpace

Marked Manner continues his investigation into terrorist supporters using MySpace to spread their propaganda. One thing I found interesting was the way that the pro-jihad crowd uses the same language as the far left. For instance there use of the word: amerikkkan

Irony. Not kinda irony or ironical, actual irony.

Question: Does Rupert Murdoch know that his subsidiary, MySpace, is being used to support terrorism? Let's not give News Corp. a pass on this.

Daniel Pipes' Mad Hacking Skillz

I've always knows that Daniel Pipes had skillz. You know, like nunchuck skills, bowhunting skills, and I hear that like a butt-load of gangs wanted him to join because he's pretty good with the bow staff. But I never, not in my wildest dreams, suspected he had mad hacking skillz!*

So, who hacked Imam Musa's MySpace website? Some islamist message boards are blaming Daniel Pipes, Robert Spencer & ......drumroll please...me. Just check out Robert's post here, and you'll see that the second link posted over at Shia Chat claiming we boasted about hacking the site is to my post on Imam Musa here.

If you read what the Islamists are saying you'll also notice that they accuse Daniel Pipes of Greenwaldian sock puppetry. They say Robert is Pinnochio and Pipes Geppetto.

And it hurts. Really it does. Because if anyone is playing Kevin to Daniel Pipes' Mephisto, it's me, not Robert!

What is so funny is that while accusing Daniel Pipes of hacking Imam Musa's website and simultaneously linking my post about it, they totally overlook the fact that I actually name the party responsible. I know who did it. Because minutes after Imam Musa's MySpace page was taken down, he e-mailed me letting me know that he had taken over the account name. He goes by the initials DJM. CORRECTION: Super-sikret source says DJM is a SHE.

So, in fact, Imam Musa's website wasn't exactly "hacked" in the traditional sense of the word. What really seems to have happened is that after a few prominent websites--including The Jawa Report, Robert Spencer's Jihad Watch, and Charles Johnson's LGF--exposed his pro-terrorist propaganda at his MySpace account, Imam Musa deleted the account himself. These pro-terrorist scumbags can't stand the exposure, it seems.

What DJM did was to simply create a MySpace account in the name of the now vacated Imam Musa. The graphic you see to the right is something he left for the good Imam's followers.

So, even though I'd love to claim hacking Imam Musa's account, it just isn't true. But never fear, for there are still tens of thousands of other pro-terror websites to hack. And with each day, my hacking skillz improve.

*I wish I had actually thought of the idea of saying Daniel Pipes had "mad hacking skillz", but it was actually Robert Spencer who jokingly used the term in an e-mail to me. See, I can't even come up with a funny phrase let alone hack MySpace. Hat tip: Bobby.

Daniel Joseph Maldonado: How the Internet Created a Terrorist

Daniel-Al-Jughaifi.jpgHow does Daniel Joseph Maldonado, a mild-mannered married Boston native, become transformed into Daniel Al-Jughaifi, a zealous supporter of sharia law, and then into Abu Mohammed, an armed jihadi fighting in Somalia alongside al Qaeda operatives? The internet, that's how.

Aaron at Internet Hagannah traces Maldonado's exodus:

Attitudes like Daniel's don't develop in a vacuum. They develop and are nurtured in community with other Muslims, and that community is found online. Islamist forums function like little terrorist factories. Muslims enter at one end, and terrorists and their plots issue forth from the other end. No matter how good we are at monitoring these online communities, the fact is that relying on such monitoring to prevent terrorist attacks is like trying to catch a bullet in mid-flight. Just ask the man who was murdered in Kismaayo. Better to go for the weapon, before the trigger is pulled. The forums are the weapon, and this is why people like Sasjamal [who ran the Islamic forum that Daniel was a moderator at] are culpable for the damage that results from their efforts to create and maintain these forums.

How we proceed from here is open to debate. There is more than one way to deal with online communities of Islamic extremists. But there is no doubt that watching them is not enough.

Indeed. You can't kill all the terrorists, but it's not nearly as difficult to take out the main jihadi forums as the talking heads suggest. more...
