Worldwide al Qaeda Money Laundering Scheme Busted!

A worldwide terrorist money laundering scheme has netted 39 arrests. The al Qaeda fund raising scheme was centered in Washington, D.C, but extended around the globe.

The scheme was run from Washington, D.C. by Saifulla Ranjha's Hamza, Inc., but it had links around the country and the globe. Ranjha's right-hand man is said to be a Canadian, Mazhar Chughtai, who arranged the bank transfers.

The only other name I could find is that of a Pakistani, Aqeel Khalid, who was arrested in Seattle yesterday for trying to bribe an immigration officer so that the al Qaeda money-launderers could obtain legal permanent residency--a green card.

UPDATE: Allahakhchew notices two more names: Anar Muhammad Shan and Preces Mehmood Sandhu, both arrested in Spain yesterday. more...

Texas/Minnesota Companies Helping Terrorists

quds_image.gifAt least three U.S. companies continue to do business with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorist organization. The PIJ is a violent offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood and shares the same longer terms goals as al Qaeda. The shorter term goal of PIJ is the destruction of the state of Israel and the establishment of sharia (Islamic) law. The PIJ is known to intentionally target and kill civilians, including Israeli children.

Often web-based companies do not know who they are doing business with and do not monitor the content they serve because financial transactions and webpage building takes place online through standardized forms and templates.

Since The Jawa Report ran a story on September 5th about the PIJ websites enabled by American corporations, all three companies have been notified that they are violating US law. None of the companies have responded and all continue to help these violent terrorists spread their message, recruit new blood, and inspire the murder of civilians.

PIJ has been designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and the leaders of PIJ Specially Designate Nationals by the U.S. State Department. Under U.S. law it is illegal to provide business services, even free ones, to terrorists such as the PIJ.

The three PIJ websites are:
http://www.shikaki.net/
http://www.sarayaalquds.org/
http://www.falestiny.net/

Below: each of the three websites carries the logo of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Above right: an image from one of the websites glorifying a rocket attack which killed an Israeli civilian.

Wordpress Still Hosting al Qaeda Website: Killing Americans is Muslim Duty

caravanofmartyrs.jpgA few readers e-mailed me wondering what the significance was of Osama bin Laden, in the most recent "new" video, urging Muslims to "join the caravan of martyrs." The phrase doesn't interest me as much as the fact that it's also the name of a popular website hosted on Wordpress.

http://caravanofmartyrs.wordpress.com/

Don't let the disclaimer fool you, the website explicitly endorses al Qaeda. They even go so far as praising the former leader of al Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Musam al Zarqawi. The man who personally beheaded Nick Berg and who's brutality even prompted Ayman al-Zawahiri to urge caution lest he create a negative attitude towards al Qaeda.

After a long posting on how tender and nice Zarqawi was, the website goes on to pray:

May Allah swt accept his martyrdom. Ameen.
I've mentioned the website many times before, but don't you think it's about time that Wordpress took our complaints seriously?

And just in case you don't understand where the author & website are coming from:

The ruling to kill the Americans and their allies–civilians and military–is an individual duty for every Muslim who can do it in any country in which it is possible to do it...

We — with God’s help — call on every Muslim who believes in God and wishes to be rewarded to comply with God’s order to kill the Americans and plunder their money wherever and whenever they find it.

That is from the "About" page and those are the words of Osama bin Laden.

We've complained to Wordpress about the website in the past to no avail. Either the company doesn't care or they are understaffed and not equipped to deal with such complaints. Either way, their inability or unwillingness to respond to these complaints is sickening.

Florida Company (and AT&T) Hosting Terrorist Website

UPDATE: Well, what do we have here? Another Islamic Army in Iraq site. This one very active. Oh, and hosted by AT&T.

Looks like the new "Reform and Jihad Front". The Islamic Army in Iraq wasn't exactly enamored by al Qaeda's "Islamic State of Iraq" so they have set up their own competing shadow government. This would be their website.

To be honest, one of the lamest attempts at jihadi propaganda yet seen. Even so, here it is.

Al Boraq Media is the propaganda arm of the Islamic Army in Iraq. The same geniuses that brought us "we shoot down giant American warplane". The IAI is also the same group of "resistance fighters" who murdered American civilian hostage Ronald Shulz and Italian Red Cross worker Enzo Baldoni.

The website isn't too complicated. It simply states the need for organizations like al Boraq to get the "truth" out to counter the Western media and reiterates why propaganda is so important for the jihad. But still, it's sickening enough having this stuff on the internet--but even more sickening seeing an American company helping the terrorist murderers out.

Three GIMF Online Jihadis Arrested in Austria

Three members of the Global Islamic Media Front (GIMF) have been arrested in Austria. The three were involved in an online video which threatened Germany and Austria with terror attacks if they did not suspend their support of the NATO mission in Afghanistan.

AP:

Interior Minister Guenther Platter said the three — all second-generation Austrian citizens with Arab origins — were aged between 20 and 26. He said they were believed to have contacts to al-Qaida but offered no details, saying he did not want to prejudice investigations....

Platter said two of the three were a couple. House searches were continuing, he added. The three suspects are being interviewed, he said....

In a Web statement that surfaced in March, Islamic militants threatened to attack Germany and Austria unless the two nations broke ranks with the U.S. and withdrew their personnel from Afghanistan.

Just to reemphasize, the three were not arrested for planning an attack, but they were definitely in touch with al Qaeda and had threatened an attack.

The video Howie uploaded in March can be seen here.

Last week Germany arrested three men for a plot to attack U.S. interests in Germany. More arrests were promised. I speculated at the time that the three were somehow connected to GIMF, al Qaeda's propaganda outlet in Europe. Today's arrests may be related.

GIMF is the European propaganda arm in support of al Qaeda and other radical Islamist organizations. They are also longtime 'friends' of The Jawa Report. GIMF operative know who we are. As such can I be the first to say ha-ha!

The video was first released on GIMF's Voice of the Caliphate online television station in March of this year. The station regularly played al Qaeda produced propaganda. It was especially supportive of the Chechen jihad. The "station" still maintains, although no longer updates, a website on Google's blogspot platform here.

In addition to showing and distributing al Qaeda produced videos from al Furqan and as Sahab, GIMF produces it's own documentaries in support of jihad. Recently al Qaeda in Iraq sent a thank you note to GIMF for their supportive propaganda efforts.

The web based TV station is no longer active, but GIMF is. Most GIMF publications are now released through Islamist forums. They still do videos, including the release of the hostage video of Fox News reporters Steve Centanni and Olaf Wiig, but their mainstay has always been an online print magazine.

The group is also responsible for the release of the terrorist "training" video game, "The Night of Bush Capturing". The climax of the game is one-on-one combat against President George W. Bush.

Until recently, GIMF also maintained a large number of connected websites, most of them running on American servers. Those GIMF websites are now offline thanks to a campaign started by The Jawa Report and with help from LGF readers, Black Flag, and Weasel Zippers.

GIMF complained loudly and publicly about the campaign against their websites and has been busy trying to rebuild and recruit more online jihadis recently. We'll see if these three arrests put a dent in their organization.

These guys aren't that hard to find, and the Europeans could easily round them up if they only tried. Reporters from Germany's Die Zeit and Spiegel TV were able to interview GIMF leaders simply by requesting an interview in the comments at their now defunct website.

Thanks to Aaron at Internet Haganah for the tip and for raising GIMF's ire by diligently chronicling the online presence of their allies. He's an inspiration to us all.

Al Qaeda in Europe Recruiting Cyberjihadis, Whine About CIA Plot to Take Down Islamist Websites

Is it just me, or has al Qaeda in Europe's online jihad brigade at The Global Islamic Media Front [GIMF] become a bunch of whiny bitches? Seriously, these guys make the Taliban Marys look like Larry Craigs--you know, kinda butch but still ghey.

In a short-lived online announcement today (tragically cut short by the unfortunate death of the website) GIMF announced that it was seeking Muslims willing to fight the online jihad. The call was part of a longer post explaining what the online jihad is, why it is important, how the internet is used in the physical jihad, and lamenting the fact that so many pro-terror websites had been taken offline lately.

No doubt they had in mind their own Wordpress hosted websites, the last of which seems to have disappeared.......

In today's statement GIMF pointed to a concerted campaign at pressuring webhosts to take down jihadi forums and websites. That effort, they admit, is paying off. In addition to an unnamed individual and the 'mercenaries' this person has been able to marshal for the 'harassment' effort, GIMF also claims the CIA and FBI are now involved in counter-cyber-jihad efforts.

GIMF claims that the CIA and FBI are organizing conferences on how to fight the cyber jihad. They have also recruited Arab intelligence agencies in the effort, naming [the British-Zionist built] Jordan and Egypt specifically.

Triumphantly they declare that for every cyber-jihadi arrested 1000-3000 more will take their place. Maybe, but since arresting the cyber-jihadis isn't the only option, one has to wonder how many Salafi geeks sitting at a computer in Mommy's basement are really ready to go that far?

Recently, the group noted that Abu 'Abdallah Al-Maqdisi, webmaster of the Al-Nusra Al-Jihadiyya website, had been killed by Lebanese forces. Soooo, sad. That's odd, I don't see 1,000 cyber mujahideen volunteering to take al-Maqdisi's spot.

These guys claim they are real mujahidin, just like their compatriots fighting in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kashmir, Chechnya, and Somalia. It's about time they were reminded that law enforcement isn't generally the model we use to fight wars.

Here we are GIMFers. Come and get us. We know you're in Germany, so it shouldn't be too hard to hop on over here. Just remember that in the US we have guns.

Q: With more and more complaints similar to this from the online jihad community, have we finally turned a corner in the cyber war?

An Army of Davids in Counter-Cyber Jihad

An interesting proposal similar to what I've advocated for years now. If the cyber-jihadis want to put their best geeks against our best geeks: bring it on, biyotches.

Only, it wouldn't be like an Army of our Davids vs an Army of their Davids. No, it would be more like an Army of Davids on our side vs a brigade of incompetent fools who should have been paying attention in hacking 101, but instead were too busy doing advanced research on whether or not it is harem or halal to wipe with the right hand.

Contentions:

But while there are some private groups (such as the SITE Institute) that monitor jihadist activity on the Internet, I haven’t heard of any that actually attack jihadist web sites. Maybe it’s already being done on a small scale, but much more could be done to target the thousands of Islamist web sites. Hackers, take it away . . .
Since the idea seems to be also hitting military circles, perhaps my idea of cyber-privateering might actually go somewhere in the future.

Counter-Cyber Jihad: It's the New Black

Counter-cyber jihad in the Weekly Standard. It seems that we have finally gone mainstream. You'll note that the article identifies one potential problem: that if an American webhost drops a site because of TOS violation, that site might pop up on a foreign server. And there may be some intel value in having those websites hosted in the U.S.

Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more.

I would caution, however, that the intel value of these websites are sometimes overstated. Most of these websites are used only to dish out propaganda, and there are simply far too many consumers of this propaganda and far too little in the way of resources to keep tabs on those consumers.

Aaron has a little reminder about striking the proper balance. HT: NC

Wordpress FINALLY Closes al Qaeda Linked Websites

After dozens of posts here at The Jawa Report about Wordpress hosting The Global Islamic Media Front (GIMF), a German al Qaeda support group, they've finally responded to complaints. The two main Wordpress hosted GIMF websites are down. The Weasel Zippers have the details.

Unfortunately, Wordpress is still hosting GIMF's al Battar Media in support of the Islamic State of Iraq (al Qaeda) here, and dozens of other al Qaeda support websites. But, one battle at a time.....

For their diligent efforts, we hereby pass along the blue AK-47 to the Weasel Zippers--first passed to Rusty by Sith Master Aaron of Internet Haganah for similar efforts-- for helping bring this to the attention of Wordpress, and to Blackflag for quietly working behind the scenes on the same project. We also elevate The Weasel Zippers and Blackflag to the status of "Sith Lords" and charge them each with taking a paduan learner until they too can pass the blue AK-47, signifying another jihadi website being pwned, to the next generation of online counter-jihadies.

Well done!

Emerson to Scheuer : "You`re the most educated person in the world, yet you know nothing"

Steve Emerson and Michael Scheuer were on Glenn Beck duking it out on the subject of Islamic motivations. Video here.

Transcript:

SCHEUER: Yes. I think really, Glenn, that the problem we have is -- is the motivation is very important. They don`t hate us for who we are. They don`t like who we are.

But why they`re attacking us is because we support governments like the Saudis, like the Egyptians, because we`re on the Arabian Peninsula.

Islam is a very diverse civilization, and the only reason bin Laden has been able to generate any unity is because Muslims, extremists and whiskey drinkers running the spectrum, hate U.S. foreign policy.

BECK: Steve, last word here.

EMERSON: I’m sorry. With all due respect, that`s a lot of malarkey. They may hate U.S. foreign policy. They hate the United States . They hate secularism. They hate the separation of church and state. They hate our values, and nothing will stop them, other than to see our obliteration.

Whether in fact that’s a possibility or not, they believe it is, and that`s the only thing that’s motivating them.

SCHEUER: That’s a very silly statement, and it`s dangerous because.

EMERSON: It`s not a silly statement, Michael. I mean, come on, Michael. You know as well -- you have been under...

SCHEUER: Only an uneducated person would make a statement like that.

EMERSON: I’m sorry to be uneducated.

SCHEUER: I’m sorry you are too, sir.

EMERSON: I`m sorry. You`re the most educated person in the world, yet you know nothing.

Bad Day to Be an eJihadi/Cyber Terorrist

As mentioned earlier by Howie, the website which was sponsoring online terrorism against anti-Islamists targets through their software, Electronic Jihad 2.0, is now offline.

http://www.al-jinan.org/ -- down

Just wanted to mention that before welcoming the refugees from one of the oldest and most popular pro-jihad message boards, who seem to also be having a bad day.

http://www.al-ekhlaas.net/ -- down

This was the website on which the al Qaeda linked terrorists who kidnapped Alan Johnston posted their videos. And they just happened to be co-conspirators with al Jinan in organizing the e-jihad.

That's some cyber jihad you got going there..........retards.

Nabbing Terrorists From Your Basement

I've been an admirer of Shannen Rossmiller's basement counter-jihad for awhile now. I did not know she was also involved in the Mohammed Radwan Obeid, which, long-time readers will recall, The Jawa Report had a minor hand in as well.

So, is it possible to fight the counter-jihad from your basement in your free time? Yes, it is. And what Shannen doesn't mention in her article is that you don't even have to speak Arabic to do it. In fact, while the preferred language of terrorists is still Arabic, English is a close second.

Here is the money quote, and today's food for thought:

Jarret Brachman, director of research for the Combating Terrorism Center at the United States Military Academy, points out, "It is the strategic—not operational—objectives of the jihadi movement's use of technology that engenders the most enduring and lethal threat to the United States over the long term." He argues, "If Western governments made reading the online statements posted by Al-Qaeda ideologues a priority, they would better realize how the jihadi movement is not simply using technological tools to recruit new members, receive donations, and plan attacks. In actuality, Al-Qaeda's use of the Internet and other new technologies has also enabled it to radicalize and empower armies of new recruits by shaping their general worldview."

The Cyber Jihad is Real

Daniel Henninger has a lengthy piece in the WSJ today about the cyber jihad. In it, he accurately describes, mostly relying on an RFERL report, the state of the cyber war being waged as we speak. The cyber war is every bit as real as the war with bullets. The Islamist militants engaged in it understand, far better than our own Western governments, the power of propaganda in winning converts, resupplying the troops with fresh suicide terrorists, demoralizing the enemy, & raising money.

The young Muslims in Germany running the Global Islamic Media Front (GIMF) consider themselves jihadis and mujahidin engaged in acts of war and terror every bit as much as the suicide bomber killing Shia civilians that travelled to Iraq from Britain.

What's so odd, though, is the utter astonishment that many have at learning that the cyber war even exists. I was amazed--absolutely dumbfounded--listening to a reporter today ask the President to produce evidence that there was an al Qaeda presence in Iraq! When nearly every day al Qaeda in Iraq's al Furqan media or it's press release agents release statements and videos showing their work. Not to mention the fellow travellers in Ansar al Sunna, the Islamic Army in Iraq, etc., etc., etc.

Okay, so what should we do, Henninger asks and then doesn't answer:

The answer--technical or political--is not obvious to me. But the one unacceptable answer is doing nothing.
Well, it's obvious to me. It's very obvious to me: treat the cyber jihad as war, and treat cyberspace as a field of battle.

The cyber jihadis are enemy combatants, not criminals. What they do online is an act of war to be fought, not a crime to be investigated.

And to do this, we need warriors willing to fight and equipped with the right tools. And it really is very easy. Much easier than the gainsayers imagine.

Give me a staff of ten geeks, a budget lower than the cost of redecorating a general's latrine in the Pentagon, and a Presidential pardon or letter of marqee, and I can deliver a blow to the cyber jihad that would be devastating. Hell, give me a single additional tough sounding military liason officer authorized to make physical threats of violence to webmasters who fail to cooperate and I could be even more effective.

I estimate that we could reduce the number of people viewing the propaganda produced by terrorists and their sympathizers by 80% with nearly zero effort and within a week. There really are a small number of jihadi websites that have large audiences.

And propaganda, I'll remind you, is a numbers game. It is designed to appeal to certain mass publics. The more difficult it is for mass publics to be able to view this material the less capable these groups are at recruiting, fundraising, and shaping public opinion.

The work done at the Internet Haganah, or our own pale imitations of it here at the Jawa Report, to urge webhosts to stop empowering the cyber jihad just goes to show that even private actors can have some limited impact on the cyber jihad. Mention the name Wilenski on a jihadi website and see what kind of reaction you get. Or get a hold of the Taliban's webmaster and see if he knows who Rusty Shackleford is.

But our work is limited by the present legal system which assumes that a propagandist for al Furqan sitting at a cyber cafe in Morocco glorifying a suicide bomber, or an editor for as Sahab working from and Islamabad maddrassa encouraging Muslims to murder Americans, is the same as an online pornographer: perhaps bad guys expressing some sick points of view but there's really nothing we can do about it.

It's also complicated by intelligence agents who, erroneously, believe there is more value to be had by spying on the jihadis through their online networks than to taking these websites and their propaganda down. But for every jihadi they catch through this intelligence, ten more have been recruited and thousands more have been swayed.

Moreover, going after the websites, distribution bulletin boards, and propagandists would still leave plenty of cyberspace for intelligence to be gathered and bad guys nabbed. That is all I will say about that in public. And by making the space in which the cyber jihadis operate smaller, we limit the number of players to be monitored.

Anyway, if you are not up on your cyber-jihad 101, then go check out Henninger's piece for a quick brief.

Hat tip: Astute Blogger.

Wordpress Hosted Terrorists Announce Media Campaign to 'Infiltrate' Infidel Websites, Support al Qaeda in Iraq

The Global Islamic Media Front (GIMF) has issued a call for the online Islamist community to infiltrate Muslim & non-Muslim websites and post propaganda in support of the al Qaeda front group, the Islamic State of Iraq. The publication in support of the Islamic State of Iraq was posted in Arabic, German, French, and English.

MEMRI:

Recently, the Global Islamic Media Front (GIMF) announced a new comprehensive media campaign titled "The Battar Media Raid to Defend the Islamic State [of Iraq] (ISI)," [1] whose declared purpose is to repel the intensive campaign against the ISI by Arab and Western media agencies and to stop the increasing military campaign against the ISI by Sunni organizations in Iraq.

In a message titled "The Battar Media Raid: How to Participate? How to Help? What Is My Role?" the GIMF announces the beginning of the campaign and provides a detailed description of the campaign's goals and ways of accomplishing them, including infiltrating non-Islamic forums for the purpose of posting pro-ISI propaganda.....

If, however, you do not possess this expertise... there are other matters you can [promote]: for example, posting matters related to the raid in most [jihad] forums... posting [material] in non-jihad forums, posting in non-Islamic forums such as music forums, youth forums, sports forums, and others. Anyone who undertakes to post the material must look into the [appropriate] manner of spreading [the material for each type of forum]... The way in which members of music forums address one another differs from the way members of jihad forum address one another."

The following poster was also posted at the GIMF website.

The symbol at the bottom left hand corner is that of GIMF, but that is the flag of the Islamic State of Iraq--the al Qaeda umbrella group-- on the bottom right.

The GIMF has long been a target of The Jawa Report. The online community of cyber jihadis, based in Germany, uses the internet to spread Islamist propaganda. They have dozens of websites, and even a web based television station. While not officially connected to al Qaeda, there is no doubt that they constitute the largest pro-al Qaeda propagandist organization in the West.

GIMF has been involved, on the propaganda side at last, in the kidnappings of German hostage Hannelore Marianne Kraus and her son and in the hostage taking of Fox News reporters Steve Centanni & Olaf Wiig.

GIMF, it would seem, has a working relationship with Islamist terrorists all over the world. Including al Qaeda in Iraq.

We have mentioned these bastards dozens of times, most recently by Howie who believes it was GIMF that was behind the latest spam attack on The Jawa Report. As previously noted, the blogging platform of choice for GIMF happens to be Wordpress. This is their German website, hosted by wordpress. And yes, I'm positive this is their official website, since I was able to track Die Zeit's request for an interview, later broadcast on German TV, to a conversation the journalist had with GIMF in their comment section.

Oh, and Howie grabbed this screenshot from the GIMF publication mentioned by MEMRI above

When Yahoo was notified that they were hosting a GIMF website which openly supported al Qaeda, they had the class to take that website down. But Wordpress? Not so much. After several posts about Wordpress hosting GIMF webpages, with all the complaints that come with such posts, nada on Wordpress's end. Don't even get me started on the Google owned blogspot and all the terrorist supporters over there.......

Thanks to Gerald and Howie for the heads up. Gerald's comments about winning the propaganda war are also important.

**Few terror supporters actually say, "we support terrorism" and these blogs are no exception. What they do is define terror in such a way as to exclude every organization listed by the U.S. State Department as specially designated terrorist entities. Most of these blogs, though, openly support terror organizations such as al Qaeda in Iraq, the Islamic Courts Union of Somalia, or the Taliban.

Big-Time Arms Dealer Nabbed

(Madrid, Spain) International weapons trafficker Monzer al-Kassar was arrested Thursday evening by Spanish police in Madrid. Earlier in the day, an indictment was unsealed charging Kassar with conspiring to sell arms to rebels in Colombia.

The indictment resulted from illegal actions by Kassar after he was caught in a sting operation crafted by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency. Good.

Kassar has been a particularly nasty player in the mix of terrorists, despots and criminals threatening U.S. interests and American citizens. He provided everything from Saturday night specials to surface-to-air missiles.

In Romania, co-conspirators Tareq Mousa al-Ghazi and Luis Felipe Morena-Godoy were also arrested in the operation. The three were indicted on four separate conspiracy counts "including the supplying of material support to a foreign terrorist group; conspiring to kill U.S. nationals, officials and employees; and conspiracy to acquire an antiaircraft missile."
