Dutch Minister of Justice Piet Hein Donne thinks it's okay to stone women to death if they've been caught in adultery. He also believes that the principle of democracy is so important that rape victims can be given the death penalty if they cannot produce four male witness as per the Quran.

Oh, and he's a member of the Christian Democratic Party. I'm sure Jebus would be proud.

This is the problem with the democracy-above-all-advocates. They would trade your liberty to the principle that the masses have the final say. Even if those masses wish to oppress themselves and you.

UPDATE: Just to clarify, I've taken what Piet Hein Donne has said to the logical extreme--but it is the extreme. The point of this is not that Donne actually supports sharia, only that someone who takes the position that democracy is the end game, and not the means to an end, is in a problematic position.

Further, reader Danny from the Netherlands writes to clarify Donne's position. Apparently, his words have been taken out of context. The context in which Donne was writing, says Danny, is that democracy can be abused to reach evil ends (If I am reading Danny's letter correctly).

In other words, Donne is taking the exact opposite of the position that he is being reported as taking! He opposes sharia to the point that even if it was adopted through legal and demcratic means, it's still a bad deal. I can't imagine the media ever getting something like that wrong. Nope, never.

1 The grassroots have already established this in California. Today they work to abolish the Electoral College. This gives the masses the right to elect president directly. How long before the mob is alloweed to vote for what sort of government is applied? Or when does the mob give itself the right to modify the constitution at a whim?

2 For democracy to work the minorities must be protected from an overzealous majority. True democracy is not simple majority rules and that's the end of it. It gives minorities power to stop the majority as well when needed.

From the time of Aristotle it was observed that a pure democracy has the tendency to develope tyranny over a period of time, and this is why the United States accepted a Constitution that granted certain rights upon people that may not be usurped, and why they gave us a republican form of government. Here in the Netherlands, the day starts to end and the storm about Donner’s remarks this morning is settling down. What was it all about: In theory it is possible for another religion to take over a democratic community if that community lives up truly to its democratic principles. But that’s all theoretically, because you need two third of the people in a country to have them vote for one single party. In a modern society this is almost impossible! In the case of the Netherlands, if all Muslims related people would vote for one single party, they get hardly 17 seats out of the 150. Today they have zero seats. But theoretically it would be possible.


I think his book will do well!

10 This is one of the big issues for me so it's very interesting to see it discussed here.

Everyone above is absolutely right, the founding fathers created a system to avoid the tyranny of the majority. It's a brilliant system.

That statement demonstrates an fundamental lack of understanding of the structure the constitution puts in place. The judiciary is there for the express purpose of protecting the country from the mob.

The House and to a slightly lesser extent, the Senate are, by their very nature, mob rule. The president himself represents the mob as a whole.

It's the judiciary's job to moderate this mob into something resembling a civilized society. The hierachal nature of the judiciary protects the mob from "activist judges" (a term I find entirely wrong-headed and think anyone who uses it seriously should be shot for treason but that's a separate issue).

In essence, you're either with the mob or with the judges, there's no real middle ground.

12 Howie, nothing I said directly contradicts what you said. Protecting the country from mob rule doesn't mean allowing a minority to rule either. There is a balance there.

That said, most of the "protections" against minority parties were put in place by our two parties, not the founding fathers themselves. This was done to protect the large party's power and not the rights of the people.

It's a point that can be debated but, I don't think the founding fathers intended us to be a two party system.

14 Rich, I think you are wrong. The Judiciary was created as a check on both the Executive and Legislative branches, but government itself was created to prevent mob rule. That is the fundamental purpose of government. What our Founding Fathers did was say there are some rights that are granted by God, rights that the government has no right to usurp, such as freedom and liberty. The Ten Amendments to the Constitution were written to prevent anyone from taking these God-given rights away from their fellow citizens, whether they had a majority or not. This is why the Muslims hate the US Constitution so much, because it would never allow sharia law, as sharia law violates equal protection and other tenets of the Constitution, including freedom of religion.

15 Actually, Howie, democracy is simply majority rule. What we have is not a democracy, but rather a constitutional representative republic, with democratically elected representatives. Minority rights are protected only by having enumerated, immutably, in the law of the land, i.e., the Constitution. We cannot afford to let America become a democracy, because democracy is the death of nations.

I don't think there was ever any doubt that Mr. Donner was explaining how Dutch democracy works theoretically, but what really pisses me off is the fact that he says he will not take back his statement in which he claims that if the majority decides to live by sharia law, then this should be allowed because Dutch law permits it and that's how democracy works. There are so many things wrong about that statement. If that's not an open invitation for Islamofascism to grab hold of Dutch politics I don't know what is. All it takes is a little effort from Islamonutters like Hezbollah for example to start branching out into Dutch politics and poof! Say goodbye to Holland as you know it today. Donner can turn around and claim that he was only theorizing all he wants, the reality is Holland has the opportunity to nip this in the bud now to make sure that something like that would never happen even in the smallest form by taking a tougher stance against anything related to sharia law when it infringes on basic human rights. But then again, maybe it's already too late. A perfect example of how Dutch democracy works is that pedo party being allowed to have a say in politics recently.
What can I say? The man has to say something to sell his book, right?

Islam is ascendant, and Christianity is on its way out. The East has new purpose, but the West has lost its purpose. The East is bursting at the seams with a newfound belief in its own potential, whereas the West has ceased to believe in anything. The new East is brash, young and unafraid, but the old West is timid and doubtful. I hate to sound like a defeatist, but the fact is that our enemies are unified in goal and purpose, but we cannot even get a full half of our own population to believe we are at war, and worse, those who lead us in this war cannot let go of the quaint notion that we must limit our efforts according to archaic rules of war that belong to another era. This is a new day, and a whole new set of rules apply. Actually, there's only one rule - win at any cost - but we're still playing by the old rulebook that was originally written when enemy officers would meet to exchange compliments and snuff on the field before the battle. In short; we're screwed, and if we can't get enough people to realize it and stop this idiotic pussyfooting around with the enemy, we deserve extinction.

The plot thickens in the German train bombing case. Guy named "Jihad" in Germany who has been e-mailing members of al Qaeda. What, me worry? Never:

Dutch police confirmed the arrests of 12 passengers on a U.S. Northwest Airlines plane bound for India which was forced to turn back to Amsterdam's Schiphol airport on Wednesday.

"The 12 people that have been arrested were passengers," a spokesman said. "They will be interrogated in the coming hours by police investigators".

Twenty minutes into the flight, when the plane was over Germany, the pilot requested permission to return to Amsterdam and asked for a military escort. The Royal Netherlands Air Force sent two F-16 fighter jets to meet the plane.

All twelve were using their cell phones after the plane took off. You never see an entire group of passengers engage in such flagrantly illegal behavior.

UPDATE: Goldstein says he has a friend who is an Air Marshal. Might be interesting if he is able to comment on it.

Lorie Byrd has an interesting post about a British Leftist whose view of the Iraq war changed when he read the new book Le Livre Noir de Saddam Hussein (The Black Book of Saddam Hussein). Saddam Hussein killed over one million civilians, and the book is a firsthand account of some of those murders.

It's a biting indictment of both the Hussein regime for the countless attrocities it committed against its own citizens, and the French government's support of that regime. Next to the Soviet Union (and later, Russia), Saddam Hussein's biggest arms dealer was France.

The book is especially condemning of Jacques Chirac's cozy relationship with the tyrant. Not surprisingly, Lewis Jones reports the book has been ignored by Le Monde & other leading French publications. You can read AEI's review of the book here.

Unfortunately, the book has not yet been published in English. However, it's publisher Oh Editions, has released several excerpts in English, some of which I've republished below. While the authors clearly come from the European Left--they repeat the tired arguements that the "neo-cons" were looking for any reason to justify the war, have naive faith in the power of the U.N. and its resolutions, and repeat the lie that the Bush Administration never mentioned human rights or democracy building during the lead up to the war--they do support the end result of the war--the removal of the dictator Saddam Hussein. Do suicide bombers love their children? Apparently not. Three German women were arrested after they posted messages on Islamist websites in which they claimed that they intended to travel to Iraq to become suicide bombers. Not satisfied with blowing other people's children up, they decided it might be a good idea to murder their own children in the process. Der Spiegel:

German authorities may have thwarted suicide bomb attacks in Iraq by German women. According to intelligence sources, three women were prevented from travelling to Iraq after one of them had announced she planned to blow herself up in Iraq.

SPIEGEL ONLINE has learned that German intelligence agencies have prevented three German women from travelling to Iraq in recent weeks. The women, who have close contacts to the Islamist scene in Germany and at least one whom has converted to Islam, came to the attention of intelligence agencies after one of them had announced on an Internet site that she intended to blow herself and her child up in Iraq.

After the Web posting were spotted, Germany's domestic and foreign intelligence agencies mounted an intense search for the three women. One of them was located in Berlin, the other two are believed to come from southern Germany. The Berlin woman's child was taken away from her and she has been put in a psychiatric clinic. The two other women were also prevented from leaving Germany. One of them is also believed to have a child.

A MAN aged 37 has been arrested after an 11-year-old girl gave birth to a baby boy....

The man and the girl are thought to be visitors to the UK from Africa, possibly from Somalia.

The baby was kept at the hospital in a special care unit, and the girl was taken into the care of Hillingdon Borough Council. The man was not held immediately.

However, police arrested him in Uxbridge yesterday and he was questioned about the pregnancy. He was released on bail until July while cops investigate.

Islam: religion of tolerance and peace alert. A woman was assaulted by a mob of Muslim women in Germany for speaking Hebrew in a predominately Muslim immigrant neighborhood.

The woman, who holds dual German-Israeli citizenship, was walking home after a party because she missed the last bus. As she walked home, she was speaking Hebrew to a friend in Israel on her cell phone. The Steglitz neighborhood of Berlin is home to a largely Muslim immigrant community.

At about 2 a.m. she passed by a group of women who immediately confronted her after they recognized she was speaking Hebrew, when:

one of the girls suddenly walked up to the Israeli woman and slapped her in the face. The other women then joined in, pulled her hair, beat her up and kicked her. The abuse eventually stopped when the attackers thought they heard a police car approaching, and they fled the scene.

The student, who sustained injuries in the attack, received medical treatment and filed a complaint with the police.

The women's identity has not been established thus far, but they were apparently Muslim.

A brothel in Germany have been forced to remove the flags of several Muslim countries after being threatened with violence. On two occasions, groups of masked men threatened the owner of the whorehouse with knives. The owner has taken down the flags.

Europe's largest brothel, the Pascha in Cologne, which incidentally claims to be the world's only brothel with a money-back guarantee for dissatisfied customers, attached the flags of all 32 nations competing in the World Cup to its façade in a bid to demonstrate international flair and attract custom during the tournament this summer.

A giant poster covering the side of the seven-story, 126-apartment building showed a friendly-looking blonde woman lifting up her bra above the slogan "A Time to Make Girlfriends", in a play on the World Cup's official slogan "A Time to Make Friends." Right beneath her pink panties were posters of the flags, including those of strictly Islamic Saudi Arabia and Iran....

The campaign provoked excitement, but not the kind the management was hoping for. Men from the Muslim community came to the door complaining that showing the flags of Saudi Arabia and Iran was an insult to the Prophet Muhammad. Later, some returned in masks.

"On Friday evening we were threatened by 11 masked men who demand that we take down the Saudi Arabian flag," Lobscheid told the Kölner Express, a local newspaper. Not wanting any trouble, the brothel obliged and removed it and the Iranian one. But that still left the flags printed on the poster.

"On Saturday night there were 20 masked men armed with knives and sticks. They threatened to get violent and even bomb the place unless we black out the Iranian and Saudia Arabian flags on the poster as well," said Lobscheid.

Ebru Umar has reportedly been attacked near her home by Muslim youths. Ms. Umar is a vocal critic of the treatment of women in Muslim societies, is an author of a book on the subject, and was a close friend of slain Dutch filmaker Theo Van Gogh. She is also openly critical of the failure of the Netherlands--and Europe in general--to integrate Muslims into the mainstream of society.

There is precisely zero news about this in the English press. One wonders if this is because attacks by young Muslims is so common in Europe--where they have been effectively ghettoized--and therefore not big news, or because the powers that be are afraid to talk about the problem? (Brussels, Belgium) Investigations into reports that U.S. agents shipped prisoners through European airports to secret detention centers have produced no evidence of illegal CIA activities, the European Union's anti-terror coordinator said Thursday.

The investigations also have not turned up any proof of secret renditions of terror suspects on EU territory, Gijs de Vries told a European Parliament committee investigating the allegations.

The European Parliament's inquiry and a similar one by the continent's leading human-rights watchdog are looking into whether U.S. intelligence agents interrogated al-Qaida suspects at secret prisons in Eastern Europe and transported some on secret flights through Europe.

5 well.. if you live in Amsterdam, as i did, and you encounter many people from marocco spitting and insulting very much on daily basis on gay's and lesbians and other 'sexual' noticable people .. then i think actcually the movie should be a test too all people. On the other hand, in the small strict dutch religious villages woman are not even allowed to dress in jeans because of there calvinistic strict laws, so yes, some Dutch are also restricted too there 'burka'. It's not called Taliban, but Calvinistic, however there is a big difference, the calvinistic do tollerate absolutly homosexuals, but most moslims don't.

6 .. but the difference is that most Moslim immigrants are poor people looking for new future etc. .. so this is only a part of the moslim world. The immigrants in the Netherlands are not the usual people living in moslim countries, but mostly the poor ultra old fashion mountain farmers. The modern moslim people do not immigrate because they having fun in there own country including tollerance. So, the immigrants is not a common dominator of the moslim world, but instead are poor usually farmer people. Suddenly living in appartments in Holland where they slaugher their goats inside the bathrooms 6 floors up. And living as nomads within a complete different society (The Netherlands is one metropolitan) and they come 'from the country' 600 years ago. So the differences is far much bigger as, you, the internet reader, reading from your country can imagine.

If I were in Europe right now, I would do exactly what this guy is doing, getting the hell out ASAP. He sees the demographics even though he doesn't see the solution to the problem. And I think he is spot on with his assessment of the Euro feeling toward Bush and the US. My brother-in-law just returned from Italy and France and he says he has never felt unwelcome in either place until this trip. He said that you should not even mention Bush or the US Military, or you were likely to be attacked, and he said the suburbs of Paris were taboo. Not a good overall experience is the way he described it to me.

another aspect is also the differences of way of life.. we in the west.. work, work work and sit in the traffic jam, needs some rest in the evening, watch tv, and go too sleep, maybe an hour talking about politics but not really, because daily life requires in the west a lot of time. .. now.. compare this with africa and the midle east countries .. not many people really work in offices where it's not really appropiate to talk nonestop about politics or religion, now .. in those countries the whole foundation is not only builded upon religion, but it's a daily nonestop issue, and they feel humilitated with the way israels army (and thus the usa) acts.. thus.. it's like for them, there is somebody in your house (israel) and pissing on your family, that's there perspective, right or wrong, who cares, so.. for them indeed it feels as cancer, day in day out. for us, we don't feel that, because israel is not in our neighbourhood, for them it's a daily humiliation.

now,,, that you only know as westener, as for example me who married an marocan woman, and move within the arab society a bit.

That was a long time ago, now however and Britain has continued to call for 'diversity' while having an extremely lax immigration policy [look at all the radicals openly preaching in the U.K]. Diversity often comes at the cost of watering down one's own culture, and history. If X amount of population finds my custom/history offensive? remove it, and apologize for it. The whole culture then revolves around tip-toeing around each other, and ensuring they do not insult anyone.

I find Europe does not understand America at all, but believe me that's a good thing.

According to one of the signers, the French writer Caroline Fourest, the threat was made this Saturday on the website ummah.net. It mentions a who’s who guide and a list of targets scheduled for termination.

The group urges its adherents to take their time but says it should happen soon. It adds that it isn’t necessary to first have a Fatwa from a religious leader, such as the one Ayatollah Khomeini issued in 1989 against Salman Rushdie’s life for having offended the religion.

“The threat is simply not acceptable. Our Manifesto urges to resistance by means of ideas. But the Islamists have answered with threats of violence. A proof - if such was necessary - of their rejection of democratic debate and of their totalitarianism,” Caroline Fourest says.

She adds that the Manifesto isn’t against Islam but against Islamism and the Islamists’ using the religion politically to oppress, for example, Freedom of Speech. She emphasises that the signers will not be subdued by threats.
