1 The US military would never attack a mosque, however, the enemy will occassionally use firing and observation positions designed to look like mosques. But mosques are places of peace and worship, so we know that these structures are not actually mosques. It is one of these mosque-like structures that you see in the video.

6 This is only a portion of a video that's about five minutes long. How do I know? I know the guys flying the helos. That's a mixed section (Cobra/Huey) over Haditha (I think, can't remember - might be Ramadi) from my MEU, probably Nov 2005. The Army unit they supported that night (all the guys whooping and hollering) were so impressed they sent the video to us about a week later as a thank you. Sadly, I never got a copy for myself, but we all watched the hell out of it.

Not all action is visible in all vids. There are a lot of weapons that don't use tracers when they fire. Also, you don't know that what you were seeing wasn't in response to an initial attack, in which case it was probably supressing fire intended to keep the enemy pinned.

It could be that they were suppressing a forward observer for a mortar position. We don't know, so the lack of visible return fire is not a big deal. the secondary explosions indicate enemy munitions wen't up when hit, so I think it's safe to say there was a battle going on.

4 Oran, first shot is upper torso flying up and left. Can't tell what 2nd shot is. 3rd shot you can see the arm and part of the torso go flying left. You can actually see the guy moving in shot 4 just before they fire, if you watch closely enough. Looks like maybe a headshot.

I always knew the .50 was a heckova weapon, but I was still surprised at the ammount of gibbage when I first saw this video.

If you pause the first video at the right spot (almost right away) you will see that it isn't a person laying on the rock. 27 I saw this vid several months ago. It was attributed to the .50 Cal,... but it was being fired at some range in Arizona or New Mexico. And if I remember correctly mostly it was watermelons that they had placed at about 1000 meters. I think only one (the last shot shown) was an actual animal.

I'll have to backtrack and see if I can find the website that had originally posted the video. I'm pretty sure that I found it on a site that was linked from another site that was linked via BlackFive.

Re; The Mythbuster episode. They weren't proving/disproving the "red mist" or pieces of a body flying off from hydrostatic shock. They were disproving that a bullet can send a "whole" man flying through the air like they do in the movies.

It's the old "equal and opposite force" rule of physics that they were proving.

If (say a 12 guage) slug hit a man and sent him flying 10 feet through the air then the opposite force should send the shooter flying the same distance. It doesn't! So it's physically impossible for a bullet to send someone flying like in the movies.

However, a bullet can (and do) send bits and pieces of a body flying.

I've found huge chunks of brain matter (as big as my fist) down the hallway (roughly 40 feet) from a suicide that I was investigating. He ate an AK round and it took the entire top half of his head off. From the bridge of his nose up (all the way around) was gone.

There were even pieces of skull embedded in the sheetrock walls and ceiling,... some as far away as 15 feet. That required a whole lot less force than a 50 Cal round at 1000 meters would impart upon a body.

So I'm certain (without a doubt) that body parts can shear off and fly quite a ways. And that it's very possible for (even a FMJ) .50 Cal round could impart that force upon an object, body, dumbass Taliban, or whatever else you were shooting at.

31 IM is Incorrect. 50 Cal Ball ammo is not constructed like ammunition used to kill varmints. NO soft lead core, NO paper thin jacket, and NO polymer tip covering a gaping hollow point, ie Nosler Ballistic Tip. And I seriously doubt the DOD is working overtime developing a 50 Cal varmint load. I have shot many a ground hog, and am fully aware of the "red-mist" effect. I also knew people who used to shoot coyotes with Remington 17 Cal rifles driving a FMJ (see 50 Cal Ball) 17 grain bullet at over 4,000 fps. Plenty of "hydrostatic shock", ZERO "red-mist", pelt unaffected.

32 West, the core construction isn't the issue, although .50 BMG ball is essentially no different than regular ball ammo, i.e. a lead core with a full copper jacket; the issue is energy retention and transfer. Retention is a function of mass, which the .50 has plenty of, and transfer is accomplished through direct impact and hydrostatic shock, which comes from the hypersonic velocity of the bullet. Hollowpoint varmint bullets are designed to dump their energy by expansion, and so create a short, but nasty wound channel, while solids make deeper channels and rely more on velocity to create shock. If you think a Remington .17 hollowpoint hitting a coyote is like a BMG .50 ball hitting a man, then you need to spend some time behind real guns and shoot lots of different stuff. A .50 BMG can take a concrete building apart, but you think it can't take a man apart? Get some real world experience before you try to school your elders and betters.

33 Ok from a personal perspective a .50 cal BMG round does damage like this all the time. Whether it is from a Ma Deuce or a barret sniper rifle it does not matter, The sheer velocity is usually enough to rip of legs or arms or if hit in the torso the path of least resistance usually pops an arm off or the orifices in the head (eyeballs, mouth, etc..) blow out from the extreme instant pressure....ohhh 2003/04 OIF for my perspective

50 Folks this is a varmint hunting video. Play it frame by frame. The targets are rock chucks, and the terrain suggests high desert, possibly in the Northwest U.S. The weapon was most likely a .22-250 (or some other 3500 to 4000 feet per second cartridge). The bullet is going so fast that dynamic hydrostatic pressure blows the relatively small and squishy critters to smithereens.

A .50 caliber BMG round will blow a Taliban's head off, but it won't chop his body to hamburger like the 25mm round used in the Bradley Fighting Vehicle autocannon will, or the 30mm Vulcan gatling gun (such as mounted in the A-10 Thunderbolt II)...

British and Canadian snipers have been using the .338 Lapua in their inventory in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere (a belted magnum cartridge designed specifically for long-range sniping) ...

I have been a lot more involved with the topic at hand than you have. I have seen enemy hit by various sniper rifles thru spotting scopes in Afghanistan. I have spent a great deal of time in Afghanistan, scanning the terrain (among other activities).

Those are not people being hit. It is not Afghanistan. And sniper teams do not carry *video* cameras with almost impossible zoom capabilities when 'doing their stuff'.

The shots that you see being taken are not being taken at that great of a range. If you have a decent ammount of time dealing with gunfire at range, optics, etc. you know what I am talking about.

55 I can't make up my mind from the video provided. I have shot many a gopher with a variety of calibres, sometimes cleanly, and sometimes not so. Once I shot a a gopher intending to use parts as bait to go pike fishing (long story). I was using .22 long rifle ammo, and my shot went low about 1/2 to 1 full inch. I struck the rock directly in front of the gopher (I notice the amount of rockiness in the video)The bullet and fragments ripped the gopher into three peices, one of which was nearly the whole leg.

It is not far fetched for a bullet in .50 calibre (which in previous wars was considered worthy to attack armored vehicles) to rip a Jihadist dirtbag to shreds, especially if rock shards and secondary fragmentation play a role.

Also with all the "fauxtography" going on, it behooves us to question any source out of fairness. But I am wanting it to be Talibs so badly that I really want a definite answer.

59 As much as I want to believe that video is true, I have heard from a number of different people in the know that there is NO WAY those are human beings. 60 Is this thread still alive? as a correction the US military does not use a .338 or better known as a 300win mag. Also said video first aired way back in first part of 2002. US navy sniper team took the shots, and it was observing taliban in the push to kabul or kandahar setting up ambush sites, presumably they were snipers themselves. 4 I have been to Peace Park in Hiroshima and visited the museum there. It is a severely biased propagand mechanism which portrays the Japanese as innocent victims of an American atrocity. I found myself more angry after seeing the exibits than I was before entering the building. In one exhibit, the Koreans in Hiroshima were described as innocent people and victims of the bomb. What is not mentioned is the Koreans were slave labor. There are repeated refrences to the innocent school children who were killed and the simple and good natured japanese people who only wished to go about their daily lives.

No mention of the atrocities perpetrated against prisoners of war or little things like Pearl Harbor, the Bataan death march or cuplability.

They got what they deserved.

There's a huge ultra-nationalist movement going on that needs to be stopped. They have not yet paid reperations for the damage they did to China, Korea, the Phillipines, etc. Did you know that Japan killed 35 million innocent Chinese people when they invaded in 1937 and left in 1945? They even left a contingent of 800 soldiers in China to fight with this Nationalist warlord against Mao and Chiang-Kai Shek so when they came back they would have an easier time. I've been to Nagasaki. I didn't feel guilty. Sorry that war happened, that it exacts such great costs. I think more people died at the firebombing of Tokyo and Nagoya. Regardless, I'm with Paul Fussell: "Thank God For the Atomic Bomb." He was stationed on a ship waiting to mount the invasion of the main islands of Japan. He knew what happened at Okinawa. He knew what the likelihood of survival was if we had been forced to invade.

But is the message of this thread that we should be contemplating using nukes against...who, exactly? Iraq? Iran? Lebanon? Syria? I don't get it.

The Pacific War was fought with extreme brutality, and the Japanese resolutely refused to abide the Geneva rules. The Nazis, by contrast, largely obeyed them in regards to Brit and US prisoners, with notable exceptions, and treated the Russians with subhuman ferocity which was returned in spades.

We sometimes violated them against the Japanese, but on the whole we observed them, even as they did the unspeakable like Bataan. It took nobility and honor and courage to do this, to treat Japanese POWs much better than they treated our boys (and girls). But we did it because that is who we are. It also helped make Japan a better nation postwar. If we had tortured them, humiliated them, and executed them capriciously, they would not be the nation they are today, they would not be our firm ally, and the tensions in the pacific would be high, even today.

Why don't we learn from that?

6 I highly doubt that there was an Iranian sub when the cruise missile hit the Israeli corvette. There are so many warships out in the Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea. They would easily detect a Kilo-class sub.

Is the footage being taken from an attack helicopter or a UAV or what? Israel has amazing pilots. Second best in the world behind Pakistan. Yes, Pakistan. I can give evidence if anyone wants some.

12 Want your evidence? In 1967, Pakistan sent a contingent of pilots to Syria, Egypt, and Jordan to fight the Israelis in the Arab-Israeli war. There were 5 confirmed kills made by the PAF pilots without losing a single aircraft. You can confirm this at www.acig.org.

Here's an interesting article:
In 1977, the PAF had a rare opportunity to demonstrate its marksmanship prowess in a competitive encounter with another air force. Group Captain Safdar who was then commanding No 23 Squadron narrates the story:

"While visiting our base Masroor in September 77, the CAS mentioned that during his recent visit to Iran, the Shah had inquired whether the PAF would be interested in hosting an armament competition with an Iranian Air Force fighter squadron. The CAS asked me if I would take on the Iranian squadron. Needless to say I was excited by the prospect. As a side issue the CAS promised a reward of Rs. 10,000/- to 23 Squadron if we won, and God help us if we lost!

"He instructed the ACAS (Ops) to extend all possible facilities to us in preparing an 8-member team which comprised myself, Squadron Leaders Javed Latif, Javed Qazi, Tahir Hussain, Imtiaz and Shams, and Flight Lieutenants Farhad and Khalid. Every F-6 Squadron was asked to lend 2 aircraft to 23 Squadron for the exercise and very soon we had nearly 30 F-6s at our disposal. I allotted two aeroplanes to each team member and instructed them to harmonize their aircraft themselves. Somiani range was reserved for us and each pilot was scheduled to fly two ground attack and two air-to-air missions per day. Within a month our performance improved significantly and we began to average 90% scores in strafing and over 50% direct hits in rocketry. Our air combat scores also improved proportionately.

"In October the Iranians flew into Masroor with their beautiful F-5Es. Compared to the F-6 the Northrop F-5E was a pretty sight, and incorporated the latest American technology of that time. I could sense that my pilots were a little apprehensive, but their urge to 'have a go' was stronger. The competition started and I led the first ground attack mission, followed by one of the Iranians; and thus we alternated through all the events. When final scores were declared we were delighted, for we had beaten the Iranians hands down both in air combat and ground attack.

"The next day we received a signal from the CAS congratulating the squadron and saying that we could collect Rs.10,000/- from the base accounts officer. But the base commander told me that since the competition had been a collective effort, the money would be claimed by the base. I was quite disappointed, as I had been planning to purchase some new furniture and rugs for the squadron for our forthcoming move to Samungli. I mentioned this to the ADC to the CAS, and told him what my base commander had said. Next day the accounts officer came and handed over Rs. 10,000/- to our squadron adjutant!"

14 Damn man, you were there?! From what I heard many people were commenting on how well the Pakistani pilots did considering how old their F-16s were. Even General Chuck Horner has said they have some of the best pilots in the world. But it might possibly be because of their old F-16s. The PAF doesn't have any BVR capability yet. But that will end soon. Next year the PAF will get the new Chinese SD-10 on their JF-17s. Not to mention the AMRAAMs that will be coming on the new F-16s and Pakistan has placed an order for 32 J-10s.

PAF is perhaps a top 15 in the world - not even close to the second best. I would have no problem putting the USAF/USN best up against the IAF's best any day of the week.

There was one training exersize, early 2005, between US Marines F-18, USAF F-15, US Navy F-14, USAF F-16, and PAF F-16. I was then in Lake Charles, Louisiana. It orginated in Atlanta (that's where the pilots gathered), and ended in Atlanta.

One of the PAF pilots was a cousin of a friend, and I had the opportunity to meet him later at a casual dinner in Houston. He informed us that firstly PAF Pilots were chaperoned by 100% armed US jets (post 911 Scenario), and performance anxiety played a heavy toll on them. Inspite of all the psychological pressure, amongst all of them, PAF pilots came out 2nd, by a very thin margin, and it was a totally biased judgement that they were ruled as second best.

1 This thing isnâ€™t much of any use. although, it is capable of destroying explosives /munition lying about but it canâ€™t destroy buried explosives /munition. I would rather see some really good IED detection devices or any kind of device that can â€œsmellâ€ nearby explosives.

There already is technology deployed in order to counter IED's, the problem of course -- just like any detector / scanner is that it is tailored around known parameters.
The builders keep changing their trigger mechanisms. Imagine how vast the amount of signal types they could use is!
Radio control and proximity triggers are old news, for most jihadi's.

10 The original purpose of Zeus was to remove unexploded ordanace from things like clusterbombs that would be laying out in the open. Using a laser you get a much smaller detonation than if you exploded the ordance in the normal way with a shock.
