Regional French newspaper L'Est Republicain, quoting a confidential source in French intelligence reports that Osama bin Laden has died of typhoid. The source notes an email circulated among French officials based on information from the Saudis.
CBS reports that the account in the French newspaper stems from an actual secret document and that the French are investigating the leak.
The information comes from a brief to French president Jacques Chirac based on Saudi intelligence sources. The Saudis seem to have confidence in the report but will not confirm without further corroboration, like locating bin Laden's burial site.

Pay particular attention to the lead sentence in this story from Reuters:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush and Senate Republicans hammered out a deal on Thursday for interrogating and trying foreign terrorism suspects, and Bush hailed it for preserving his program for CIA questioning of detainees. This is excellent news, especially in light of ABC's Brian Ross' recent blockbuster revelations about the stunning success CIA interrogations have enjoyed."I'm pleased to say that this agreement preserves the most single -- the most potent tool we have in protecting America and foiling terrorist attacks, and that is the CIA program to question the world's most dangerous terrorists and to get their secrets," Bush said of the deal.
"The measure also creates military commissions that will bring these ruthless killers to justice," Bush said on a trip to Orlando, Florida, adding he hoped Congress would send him the legislation before it wraps up its business next week."
But what about the dog that didn't bark? The Reuters story says, "...Republicans hammered out a deal..."
This is a tremendously important deal with huge implications for America's national security...and the entire thing is being handled by one political party, which begs the question: why aren't Democrats involved in protecting the United States from terrorist attack?
Update: It must be a good deal, because, as Stop the ACLU reports, the ACLU has already condemned it.

As-yet unsubstantiated reports have begun circulating on radical Arabic-language Internet chat forums that a major effort is now underway to bring the notorious Ansar al-Sunnah Army in Iraq officially under the umbrella of Al-Qaida's Mujahideen Shura Council (MSC).Read the rest if you are interested in how jihadis organize terror in Iraq. The Guardian reveals the horrors of the secret CIA torture chambers:
Details emerged yesterday about the seven interrogation techniques the CIA is seeking to be allowed to apply to terror suspects...Lack of sleep, upbraiding, and pink bellies. The techniques sought by the CIA are: induced hypothermia; forcing suspects to stand for prolonged periods; sleep deprivation; a technique called "the attention grab" where a suspect's shirt is forcefully seized; the "attention slap" or open hand slapping that hurts but does not lead to physical damage; the "belly slap"; and sound and light manipulation.
Those diabolical bastards, have they been recruiting fraternity rush chairmen?

And thank you Jawa readers for raising a stink about this. Sometimes it just takes a little noise to grab the attention of those in charge. Frankly, most customer service agents just aren't prepared to handle complaints about terrorist websites.
However, it would be nice if corporate America would do their jobs and police themselves rather than forcing us to do it for them.

A Massachusetts company has ignored pleas to take down two websites belonging to a well known terrorist organization. The Burlington, MA, Bizland company has not responded to complaints to its legal department that its servers are being used by fronts for the Islamic Army in Iraq.
The websites of The Al Boraq Media Organization features various propaganda messages from the 'Iraqi resistance'. It is registered to an organization called 'iaisite' to a Baghdad address. Many of the Islamic Army in Iraq's previous websites included the term 'iaisite' in the url, including iaisite.org which is also hosted by Bizland.
The Islamic Army in Iraq is notorious for producing propaganda videos of attacks on American and Iraqi forces and has threatened to extend their terrorism to American soil. The group also claimed the murder of American hostage Ronald Schulz and Italian Red Cross worker Enzo Baldoni.
Countless others have been killed by the Islamic Army in Iraq, including many American soldiers.
Complaints can be sent to Bizland at: legal@bizland-inc.com

The first and greatest lesson of the last five years parallels what Lincoln came to understand. The dangers are greater, the enemy is more determined, and victory will be substantially harder than we had expected in the early days after the initial attack. Despite how painful it would prove to be, Lincoln chose the road to victory. President Bush today finds himself in precisely the same dilemma Lincoln faced 144 years ago. With American survival at stake, he also must choose. His strategies are not wrong, but they are failing. And they are failing for three reasons.Trust me, you'll want to read the rest.(1) They do not define the scale of the emerging World War III, between the West and the forces of militant Islam, and so they do not outline how difficult the challenge is and how big the effort will have to be. (2) They do not define victory in this larger war as our goal, and so the energy, resources and intensity needed to win cannot be mobilized. (3) They do not establish clear metrics of achievement and then replace leaders, bureaucrats and bureaucracies as needed to achieve those goals.

Hot Air has the vid, but I find that readinga Bush speech is much more satisfying than listening to them. Let's face it, he's a terrible speaker. But this speech is awesome!
How awesome? I think we are in boner territory here. Yes, that awesome.
He even gets al Qaeda 3.0.
Apparently some one up there understands a) the threat b) the scope of the threat c) the changing nature of the threat.
Bush on a) the threat:
We know what the terrorists intend to do because they've told us -- and we need to take their words seriously....Bush on b) the scope of the threat:Now, I know some of our country hear the terrorists' words, and hope that they will not, or cannot, do what they say. History teaches that underestimating the words of evil and ambitious men is a terrible mistake. In the early 1900s, an exiled lawyer in Europe published a pamphlet called "What is to be Done?" -- in which he laid out his plan to launch a communist revolution in Russia. The world did not heed Lenin's words, and paid a terrible price. The Soviet Empire he established killed tens of millions, and brought the world to the brink of thermonuclear war. In the 1920s, a failed Austrian painter published a book in which he explained his intention to build an Aryan super-state in Germany and take revenge on Europe and eradicate the Jews. The world ignored Hitler's words, and paid a terrible price. His Nazi regime killed millions in the gas chambers, and set the world aflame in war, before it was finally defeated at a terrible cost in lives.
Bin Laden and his terrorist allies have made their intentions as clear as Lenin and Hitler before them. The question is: Will we listen? Will we pay attention to what these evil men say? America and our coalition partners have made our choice. We're taking the words of the enemy seriously. We're on the offensive, and we will not rest, we will not retreat, and we will not withdraw from the fight, until this threat to civilization has been removed.(Applause.)
The terrorists who attacked us on September the 11th, 2001, are men without conscience -- but they're not madmen. They kill in the name of a clear and focused ideology, a set of beliefs that are evil, but not insane. These al Qaeda terrorists and those who share their ideology are violent Sunni extremists. They're driven by a radical and perverted vision of Islam that rejects tolerance, crushes all dissent, and justifies the murder of innocent men, women and children in the pursuit of political power. They hope to establish a violent political utopia across the Middle East, which they call a "caliphate," where all would be ruled according to their hateful ideology. Osama bin Laden has called the 9/11 attacks -- in his words -- "a great step towards the unity of Muslims and establishing the righteous caliphate."Bush on c) the changing nature of the threat:This caliphate would be a totalitarian Islamic empire encompassing all current and former Muslim lands, stretching from Europe to North Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. We know this because al Qaeda has told us. About two months ago, the terrorist Zawahiri -- he's al Qaeda's second in command -- declared that al Qaeda intends to impose its rule in "every land that was a home for Islam, from Spain to Iraq." He went on to say, "The whole world is an open field for us."....
This charter states that "There will be continuing enmity until everyone believes in Allah. We will not meet the enemy halfway. There will be no room for dialogue with them." Another document.... declares that their vision of Islam "does not make a truce with unbelief, but rather confronts it." The confrontation calls for the "dialogue of bullets, the ideals of assassination, bombing, and destruction, and the diplomacy of the cannon and machine gun."
According to their public statements, countries that have -- they have targeted stretch from the Middle East to Africa, to Southeast Asia. Through this strategy, al Qaeda and its allies intend to create numerous, decentralized operating bases across the world, from which they can plan new attacks, and advance their vision of a unified, totalitarian Islamic state that can confront and eventually destroy the free world.
Al Qaeda continues to adapt in the face of our global campaign against them. Increasingly, al Qaeda is taking advantage of the Internet to disseminate propaganda, and to conduct "virtual recruitment" and "virtual training" of new terrorists. Al Qaeda's leaders no longer need to meet face-to-face with their operatives. They can find new suicide bombers, and facilitate new terrorist attacks, without ever laying eyes on those they're training, financing, or sending to strike us.There's so much more. Much much more. In fact, since this is a press release and The Jawa Report is the press, I'll just post the whole thing below!!As al Qaeda changes, the broader terrorist movement is also changing, becoming more dispersed and self-directed. More and more, we're facing threats from locally established terrorist cells that are inspired by al Qaeda's ideology and goals, but do not necessarily have direct links to al Qaeda, such as training and funding. Some of these groups are made up of "homegrown" terrorists, militant extremists who were born and educated in Western nations, were indoctrinated by radical Islamists or attracted to their ideology, and joined the violent extremist cause. These locally established cells appear to be responsible for a number of attacks and plots, including those in Madrid, and Canada, and other countries across the world.
As we continue to fight al Qaeda and these Sunni extremists inspired by their radical ideology, we also face the threat posed by Shia extremists, who are learning from al Qaeda, increasing their assertiveness, and stepping up their threats
WARNING: The following speech contains truths that some on the extreme Left might find offensive and make them feel all icky inside. more...

The New York Post fronts this story of unbelievable depravity in the service of Islamic Jihad:
Baby BombThe couple were going to hide the explosive components in the baby's bottles.August 16, 2006 -- Twisted young British parents planned to sacrifice their precious baby in the evil cause of jihad by mass murder.
Fanatical terror suspect Abdula Ahmed Ali, 25, and his wife, Cossor, 23, are among those being interrogated by police as suspects in the massive plot to attack trans-Atlantic flights in midair.
Doubtless, CAIR will soon have an explanation as to why Islam is not to blame.

"Report: X-Rays Don't Detect Explosives" is the red letter entry at the Drudge Report, linking the latest Associated Press scoop from a leaked document:
X-ray machines that screen airline passengers' shoes cannot detect explosives, according to a Homeland Security Department report on aviation screening. The headline and lead are inaccurate. The Rapiscan x-ray machines deployed at most US airports can, in fact, allow screeners to find explosives. Screeners are trained to use x-ray machines to detect the components of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs): timing devices, detonators, switches, and the main charge - the explosive.
I haven't seen the report, which is most likely classified and should earn the leaker a trip to Leavenworth, but from what AP has written, it most likely was pointing out that the small amount of explosive in a shoe bomb would be difficult to detect. True. That's what Explosive Trace Detection (ETD) equipment is for. But what's a good indicator to determine which shoes might deserve to be tested by the ETD? Anomalies in the x-ray image of the shoe.

I would personally like to breathe a sigh of relief, but I had to go and read this in the Washuffington post:
Some U.S. counterterrorism officials said plans originally were to allow the conspiracy to develop even further. But U.S. and British investigators made a sudden decision this week to close down the operation after they became increasingly worried that there were other bombers they had been unable to locate or identify, U.S. officials said.

From the BBC:
A terrorist plot to blow up planes in mid-flight from the UK to the US has been disrupted, Scotland Yard has said.MI5, the British internal intelligence agency, classified the threat as "critical", their highest threat level. All carry-on luggage has been temporarily banned at UK airports.
It is thought the plan was to detonate explosive devices smuggled on aircraft in hand luggage.Police have arrested about 18 people in the London area after an anti-terrorist operation lasting several months.
Sky News reports that those arrested are thought to be "...mainly young, British-born Asian men," which usually means "middle eastern" in the British press. UPDATE RS: Actually, "Asian" always means Pakistani or Indian in Britain.
Few American media are covering the story yet. The Washington Post seems to be getting their information from the Beeb, but, for some reason, inserted this rather weird non sequitur into their version of the bomb plot story:
British Prime Minister Tony Blair has come under strong criticism at home and abroad for following the U.S. lead and refusing to call for an immediate ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Lebanese Hizbollah guerrillas.Evidently, since the President isn't directly involved in the story, WaPo decided to bash Blair as a substitute. Must be a reflex.

WASHINGTON -- U.S. authorities are searching for 11 Egyptian men who arrived in the United States last month but failed to turn up at Montana State University for a scheduled academic program. No doubt they just decided to take in the sights and lost track of time.According to the FBI and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials, the men were among a larger group of students who arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York from Cairo on July 29 with valid visas.
FBI Special Agent Richard Kolko said there is no threat associated with the men.
A law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity said the men are between 18 and 22 years old.

Hizballah's propaganda wing, Al Manar TV, hijacked the service of a customer of Broadwing Communications, a Texas Internet Service Provider:
Broadwing Communications essentially threw Hezbollah off of the Internet this week. It came after the discovery that terror propaganda was linking to the company's network. Not only terrorist scum, but cheap terrorist scum.In an exclusive interview, Broadwing executives told us how Al Manar TV, the propaganda arm of the Lebanese terror organization was able to get on the Internet. It was done by hijacking the Web service of one of Broadwing's customers linking Al Manar to a Broadwing Internet address.
"Our customer had absolutely no relationship to Al Manar. And neither did we," Dillon said.
Terror experts say Al Manar's Web site is key to Hezbollah's fundraising, recruiting and communication. After being disconnected by Broadwing, they say it's already popped back up through India, but appears to have been shut right back down.

Senior Fatah sources in Gaza said on Saturday Hamas is ready to accept a deal that involves freeing abducted soldier Gilad Shalit, a joint cease-fire and an end to IDF actions in the Gaza Strip.Captain Ed's comments:What is not clear is whether Khaled Meshal, the Hamas leader in Damascus, will sanction the Egyptian-brokered deal.
This represents a major concession from Hamas and an acceptance of the Israeli refusal to release prisoners in exchange for hostages. Olmert's military incursion and refusals to negotiate have finally made it clear that Israel has changed its policy in that regard. With all the excitement going on up north, I have to admit I haven't been playing close attention to Gaza. If Capt. Ed is right, this would be one more example (of many) of a calculated show of strength paying off. Perhaps that'd shut the squishy "Peace through Begging" leftists up for at least a few days, but I doubt it.It also appears to open a split between worldwide Hamas leadership based in Damascus and Hamas in the territories. Khaled Mashaal wanted no negotiation on the demands set at the beginning by his people; he wanted a lopsided prisoner swap to undermine Olmert. Instead, Olmert called his bluff, and Mashaal's the one who may lose a substantial amount of influence as a result.

Thank you to the good folks at 1&1 Internet for their cooperation in shutting down the terror supporters website. And thank you to the British government for finally taking action against the remaining followers of Sheikh Omar Bakri Mohammed.
Unfortunately, The Saved Sect's--the Birmingham based sister organization of Alghurabaa-- website is still active. You can contact their Hong Kong based webserver with abuse complaints by e-mailing pihkcomplaint@pacific.net.hk.
Complaining to the companies that do business with terror supporters does work. Okay, sometimes it works. Be persistent.
If a company refuses to take a terror website offline, please contact me.
Now go start complaining to these companies that do business with Hezbollah!

MOSCOW - Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev, the purported author of modern Russia’s worst terrorist attacks, has been killed, the head of the Federal Security Service said Monday. For once I have to agree with Russian president Vladimir Putin, who called Basayev's extermination "deserved retribution".Basayev, 41, claimed responsibility for some of Russia’s worst terror attacks, including the seizure of some 800 hostages in a Moscow theater in 2002, the 2004 school hostage taking in Beslan that killed 331, and the seizure of about 1,000 hostages at a hospital in Budyonnovsk that killed about 100.

CNN: German police arrested Redouane E.H., 36, on Thursday in the northern German city of Hamburg, according to a statement on the prosecutor's Web site. The suspect is from the nearby town of Kiel, where police searched several homes before his arrest.Coincidence probably, but still very very satifying. He was nabbed after German investigators monitored his online chats.
The suspect was remanded to federal custody Friday after a court appearance in Karlsruhe. Also see The Security Watchtower. Who knows? Maybe we can tease a few more into exposing themselves. He is accused of having numerous contacts with international terrorists in Syria, Algeria and Iraq. According to the prosecutor's office, he completed an explosives training course in Algeria in November and has ties to the Hamburg al Qaeda cell that included September 11 hijackers Mohamed Atta, Marwan el-Shehhi and Ziad Jarrah.

You may remember Mohammed Radwan Obeid's name from the small part that The Jawa Report had in aiding his conviction.
Obeid had fraudulently immigrated to the United States by marrying an American woman, and then having the marriage annuled. Obeid was working as a cashier in Dayton, Ohio last year and living with his girlfriend in a nearby town. It was from the Troy branch of the Miami (Ohio) County public library that he began to seek out fellow jihadis.
Obeid's posts at jihadi forums was noticed by more than those anti-terrorist crusaders who monitor them. Obeid's posts about nuclear weapons and gun silencers was somehow noticed by reference librarian Laura Girolamo. Ms. Girolamo contacted the FBI who, using their newly found powers under the Patriot Act, were able to confirm the librarians suspicions.
At about the same time a Jawa Report reader from Virginia, David Vazquez, began e-mailing Obeid after we posted his address. Obeid was under the false impression that Vazquez was a fellow jihad supporter. Obeid, Vasquez says, was now trying to recruit him for a terrorist cause.
Obeid told David Vazquez in e-mails that "we are starting a big operation that will make 9/11 nothing but a little bit of headache."
According to Vazquez, "I was very alarmed at the words (Obeid) was saying." He contacted the FBI.
Armed with the knowlege provided them by their ability under the Patriot Act to monitor public library computers, and by David Vazquez's saved e-mail conversations, the FBI picked up Obeid on March 28th for 'immigration violations'.
When asked about whether or not the e-mails were his, Obeid denied that they were. Since he was asked under oath, Obeid's denials amounted to knowingly and willfully making a false material representation.
Like many other terror related cases prosecuted after 9/11, Obeid was charged first with immigration violations and then with lying to investigators. However, the content of those seemingly minor violations should not be overlooked. What was it that Obeid had lied about? About the fact that he was attempting to form a terror cell within the United States.
Perhaps Obeid would never have succeeded, but that misses the point. A Jordanian immigrant was hoping to start or join a terror cell in the U.S. He hoped to carry out terror attacks here on our soil. He dreamt that his act of terrorism would make the 9/11 attacks seem mild. Seems like kind of a big deal to me.
The Jawa Report played a small part in his arrest. For that, I am extremely proud. It's a kind of good that I never expected to play a role in. Thank you David Vazquez for helping nab this enemy of the United States and for allowing me a minor role.
