Kurds: Terrorists Excited about Democrats in Congress

The latest Michael Totten dispatch from Kurdistan. I'm almost in tears of shame reading this. The plea for America to stay seems genuine. They fear that if we leave they will be attacked from all sides.

Totten:

“As a military person, I am disturbed by what is going on in America now,” he said and jabbed his finger in the air. “They want to withdraw their troops.” He banged his fist on his desk. “We want the Americans to stay. Why are people thinking like this?” ...

“I want you, as a reporter, as a journalist,” the general said to me, “to get our Kurdish voice to the American people so they know about Kurdish suffering in Iraq. We don’t want the American army to leave this area. The terrorists are excited about what is going on in the Congress.” ...

Newshour Interview's David Petraeus

It's a good Interview. General Petraeus was impressive, he stayed on message despite the leading nature of Mr. Lehrer's questions. Some of which are merely negative statements rather than actual questions.

Via PBS GEN. DAVID PETRAEUS: Well, one thing that it tells us is that Iraqi security forces, certainly, are on the front lines and are fighting and dying for their country. They are committed to this endeavor.

It also tells us, as I noted a second ago, that al-Qaida is still capable and able to cause significant death of innocent civilians. In fact, that has rebounded against them in some parts of the country.

While finding the level of sectarian violence upon returning here was, frankly, something quite disheartening to see, on the other hand, going into Anbar province to the west of Baghdad and seeing Sunni Arab tribes fighting against al-Qaida was very heartening.

In fact, that's a major development in a province that, as you'll recall, some six or eight months ago, many were ready to write off as a lost cause, and all of a sudden you have cities all the way from the border, al-Qaim through Haditha, Hit, Ramadi and Fallujah, where tribes have volunteered for the Iraqi security forces.

In fact, in the latest recruiting effort, which used to draw minimal numbers of Iraqis willing to serve in the Iraqi army or the Iraqi police in Anbar province, there were over 2,000 volunteers for the latest training. And, again, that's quite a shift and quite -- frankly, it's a stunning development and reflects the frustration that the Sunni Arab tribes in Anbar have had with al-Qaida and what al-Qaida has done to them, to their sheiks, their families, their young men and, frankly, to their businesses and livelihoods.

It has really had a devastating effect. And they have said, "No more," and stood up and voted with themselves and with their young men.

JIM LEHRER: Senator Levin asked you a question then. To quote him, he said to you, General Petraeus, he said, "Do you agree to give your personal views when asked before this committee to do so, even if those views differ from the administration in power?" And you answered, "Yes, sir." Nothing changed?

GEN. DAVID PETRAEUS: No, I stand by that. I think that I have been forthright. I have tried to be forthright with you, as well. I have a sacred obligation to some wonderful young men and women, not just from the United States, but from all the coalition countries, to do just that. And that's what I intend to do.

You can download an mp3 to listen to the interview here.

Update: Here is a portion of the interview on youtube.

Yemen Supporting Terrorists in Iraq

Jawa Report co-blogger Jane Novak has written an article for The Weekly Standard on Yemen's at best "inconsistent" assistance in the GWOT and its consistent support and training for terrorists and foreign fighters in Iraq.

Jane Novak Via The Weekly Standard: YEMEN OPERATES LARGELY under the radar as a supporter of the global jihad. Both Yemeni and U.S. officials publicly tout Yemen's partnership with the United States in the war on terror. The U.S. embassy in Sana'a described the February 2006 escape of 23 al Qaeda operatives from a maximum security jail as "understandable in a way," considering Yemen's rampant corruption, weak institutions, and bureaucratic incompetence. (The escapees included several Cole bombers and an American associated with the Lackawanna, New York terror cell.) Presidential assistant Frances Townsend has described the Yemeni regime as an "inconsistent" partner in the war on terror, but Yemen has been quite consistent in its appeasement and facilitation of al Qaeda and related jihadi groups, and, as a result, has played a significant role in the destabilization of Iraq.

…In May 2005, a Yemeni government official stated that elements of the Yemeni secret services had established training camps for exiled Iraqi Ba'athists who wished to fight U.S. forces in Iraq. A number of sources reported that Yemen was using chlorine gas against the Shiite rebels in 2005, a full year before foreign fighters in Iraq adopted the same tactic…

…The courts in Yemen have also gone to great lengths to appease jihadists. A Yemeni court ruled in July that Yemeni law does not criminalize fighting with terrorists forces in Iraq. Nineteen suspects were tried on charges of belonging to the al Qaeda linked "Zarqawi Cell." Six of the nineteen were convicted on a lesser charge of forging official documents, though the defendants admitted fighting with the Iraqi resistance. A Yemeni court found that joining the Iraqi insurgency did not violate Yemeni law as "Islamic Shari'a law permits jihad against occupiers."

You may comment on Jane’s story at her home blog, Armies of Liberation.

al-Qaeda Enforcers Murder Little Boy

Just when you thought al-Qaeda had stooped to the lowest point possible.

Via MNF: CAMP TAJI, Iraq — While on a routine patrol, Iraqi police officers discovered the body of an 11-year-old boy April 2 in Sab Al Bor, Iraq.

The IPs found the body, a suspected murder victim, on Sudani Street. The child’s throat had been slit.

Troop B, 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment Soldiers received the initial report from the Iraqi police and assisted in gathering information. A police report of the incident indicated that a local Al Qaeda cell is suspected in the murder which was “perpetrated to instill fear in the villagers of Sab Al Bor.”

Iraqi security forces have launched an investigation to find those responsible for the murder.
A commenter on a forum recently said, "Do you think the Sunnis feel save without the ISI protecting them?"

Well, how safe does it feel when, if you have the slightest disagreement with al-Qaeda, they chop your kid's head off? How safe does it feel when al-Qeada commits mass murder in an attempt to incite violence and murder against the Sunnis by the Shia?

If that is the type of "protection" they provide, I bet most Iraqi's would rather do without.

Oh, Yeah, Them

All the news talks about is Sunni, Shia, Kurds. Looks like someone got left out.

Holy Week is a time when Christians think of the crucifixion of Jesus. This year, they should also be meditating on another crucifixion: that of a 14-year-old boy, nailed to a cross by Islamists in Iraq.

Chocolate stupidity doesn't offend me. This does, however. But not as much as this:

"When they cook a dish in the Middle East, it is traditional to put the meat on top of the rice when they serve it. They kidnapped a woman’s baby in Baghdad, a toddler, and because the mother was unable to pay the ransom, they returned her child – beheaded, roasted and served on a mound of rice.

So yes, let's all bicker about what some nobody said, which doesn't mean jack shit to an election over a year and a half away, while real people are being systematically terminated because of their stubborn refusal to give up their faith.

Iraqis Standing Up to Terrorists

Two from Bill. One on the chlorine attack, now claimed by al Qaeda to be one of their operations, in Fallujah:

The USMC/Iraqi team was sluggin' it out side by side. Something to see. US Marines and Jundi still gasping for air, fighting side by side. Some jundi still in their sleeping sweats or shower sandals refusing to be evacuated, fighting back with their AKs and PKCs into enemy positions. Yes, some of these jundi got what it takes.
The second one is a hat tip to Bill, but the real news is over at Acute Politics:
I'll go out on a little bit of a limb and say that the insurgency is quickly approaching a tipping point. If things continue as they are right now, our military won't need a surge to chase the terrorists out of Anbar- the citizens will do it for us, which is as it should be. It's beginning to show already: more local tips, more police recruits (far more than anticipated), and sadly- in bigger and more desperate Al-Qaeda attacks.
For those of you following the split of The 1920s Revolutionary Brigade from the Salafis, here is some important background.

Embracing the Suck in Fallujah and Kurdistan: Citizen Journalists Report

Embracing the suck in Fallujah, by our friend Bill from INDC:

Once perspective is established, fatalism helps. If your number comes up, it comes up. Almost - but not quite - as silly as the sentiment that "it will happen to me," is the idea that "it can never happen to me." A bunch of maniacs shooting RPG's, sniping, slinging mortars, triggering bombs and loosing machine guns are bound to hit something. And they do. But if you take reasonable precautions, keep your eyes open and do what you're told by people with experience, the overwhelming odds are, you'll be fine. And if you do get hit, at least you did everything prudent to avoid it.

Michael Totten has recently been embracing the good in Iraqi Kurdistan. Little suck to be embraced in the other Iraq. But wouldn't you know, in a part of Iraq that Hitchens thinks is destined to become the model of Middle East democracy, Totten accidentally stumbles into the suck, and manages to find an enclave of crazies in this otherwise picturesque country:

They were supposed to be social democrats, the people Patrick Lasswell and I met yesterday in a compound outside the city of Suleimaniya, the cultural capital of Northern Iraqi Kurdistan. We had it all set up. We were to meet Abu Bakr Mudarisy and his associates for lunch at 11:00 A.M. and learn what we could about the anti-government resistance a few miles away in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Our driver Yusef misunderstood and took us to the wrong place. He did drop us off where we met left-wing dissidents from Iran. But these weren’t the moderate English-speaking leftist intellectuals we were looking for. Instead we found ourselves in an armed camp of the military wing of the Iranian Communist Party.
READ THE REST. Looks like Tottens string of good luck findally ran out! His companion in the mishap, Patrick Laswell, has this to say about the suck:
They were the nicest Marxists I've ever met, even if the meeting was by accident.
The suck. Embrace it.

Those Leggy Kurdish Stewardesses

Really, I wish he had taken a picture. Oh, there are plenty of pictures, but not of the 'attractive long legged stewardess' on his flight to Kurdistan. Mike Totten e-mails with his latest dispatch from the Iraq that the MSM has never heard of. The peaceful, prosperous Iraq. A few highlights, but you really do need to see the amazing pictures and read the rest:

Nation-building is a hard and violent slog in the center and south of Iraq, and it might not ever work out. But in Kurdistan, in the north, it already is a reality.

Massive new construction projects are literally everywhere. Most of those that had started when I arrived for the first time are finished, and ambitious new projects are well underway....

Kurdistan is safe even without its anti-terrorist trench, and that's not because it is protected by American soldiers. Only 50 or so troops remain in this part of Iraq. There is no anti-American insurgency (because there is virtually no anti-Americanism) and there is no terrorism. If the Arab Iraqis were as peaceable as the Kurds, the American military could have folded its tents a long time ago.

Read the rest. Each time Totten goes to Kurdistan, I get jealous. Really jealous.

Exit question: Do I finally have permission from you, the readers, to state the morally obvious, now that it is de facto reality? Kurdistan ought to be free and independent. NOW.

Terrorists Use More Chemical Weapons in Iraq

Via AP:

BAGHDAD (AP) - Three suicide bombers driving chlorine-laden trucks struck in the Sunni insurgent stronghold of Anbar province, killing two policemen and forcing about 350 Iraqi civilians and six U.S. troops to seek treatment for exposure to the gas, the military said Saturday.

The attacks came after back-to-back bombings last month released chlorine gas, prompting the U.S. military to warn that insurgents are adopting new tactics in a campaign to spread panic.

Just after 4 p.m. Friday, a driver detonated explosives in a pickup truck northeast of Ramadi, wounding one U.S. service member and one Iraqi civilian, the military said in a statement.

That was followed by a similar explosion involving a dump truck south of Fallujah in Amiriyah that killed two policemen and left as many as 100 local citizens showing signs of chlorine exposure, with symptoms ranging from minor skin and lung irritations to vomiting, the military said.

Bill Roggio has more here.
While the attacks haven't been claimed by al Qaeda, the attacks show the hallmarks of an al Qaeda operation. The attacks were carried out within hours of each other, used methods designed to cause mass casualties and mass media attention, and targeted a tribal leader opposed to al Qaeda's operations in the region. Multinational Forces Iraq breaks down the timing and targets:
Who can doubt that if al-Qaeda had more spophisticated chemical weapons, they would use them?

Omar al-Baghdadi Captured (Updated, Bumped, Now With 100% More F*ck Yeah! (vinnie)

It looks a lot more certain than previous reports of his capture.

AP via Yahoo News Baghdad: The leader of the al-Qaida-affiliated Islamic State ofIraq was captured Friday in a raid west of Baghdad — his identity revealed by a fellow insurgent detained with him, an Iraqi military spokesman said.

Abu Omar al-Baghdadi was captured in a raid in Abu Ghraib on the western outskirts of Baghdad, said Brig. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi, spokesman of the Baghdad security operation. U.S. officials had no confirmation of the capture.

"One of the terrorists who was arrested with him confessed that the one in our hands is al-Baghdadi," al-Moussawi said.

Al-Baghdadi has been identified in statements posted on Islamic extremist Web sites as the head of the Islamic State, which was proclaimed last year after the death of the leader of al-Qaida in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

Allahpundit is following the story at Hot Air here. He also reports that two more terrorists were captured.
This morning we got “the Butcher,” whoever the hell he is, and an Al Qaeda “media emir” a.k.a. courier north of Mosul
I hope it's this guy.

The Irony is that the one knowns as courier was just bragging Baghdadi ordering a raid in Mosul. They claimed to have released 150 terrorists. A couple of which may have been Baghdadi's close relatives.

al-Qaeda's umbrella group, the ISI via their website: The brothers withdrew safely by the grace of Allah and we shall provide you with more details and a meeting with the leader of the brigade and some released captives as well Allah willing
Another crushing defeat, apparently, Allah ain't willing.

Andrew Cochran has more here at Counterterrorismblog

So can I have a big, "F*ck Yeah!"?

Update:

Via Reuters: BAGHDAD, Iraq (Reuters) - A top leader of an al-Qaeda linked group arrested on Friday and initially thought to be Abu Omar al-Baghdadi was not in fact the head of the Islamic State of Iraq, Iraqi officials said on Saturday... ..."We captured a figure who was a senior al-Qaeda member and we suspected that he was Abu Omar al-Baghdadi but after initial investigations it was proven it was not Abu Omar al-Baghdadi. But he was a senior al-Qaeda leader," said Iraqi military spokesman Qassim Moussawi.
This was common with the ISI's former and very dead leader Abu-Muscab al-Zaqeery. There were multiple reports of his caprture and or death before he was killed. Let's hope this series of reports ends the same way with ISI's new leader out of the picture.

The only consolation is the MSM picked this one up too and that really pisses off the ISI. And as Rusty says, "Isn't pissing off the Jihadis what The Jawa Report is all about?"

Mmmmmm, never had to eat, "F*ck Yeahs!", for breakfast. Pretty tasty. So, can I get a big, Well F*ck!? more...

US Strike Takes Out Helicopter Shooters

Reuters says a US strike near Taji Friday took out a terrorist network responsible for targeting coalition helicopters:

Reuters—A U.S. air strike killed senior insurgents suspected of targeting American helicopters in Iraq, and the Iraqi government said 39 militants had been killed in western Anbar province in recent fighting.

The U.S. military said on Saturday the air strike took place on Friday north of Baghdad near the town of Taji, which is home to a major U.S. air base. It said weaponry, including a vehicle mounted with anti-aircraft artillery, was destroyed.

"Coalition forces believe key terrorists were killed during 1the air strike ... Intelligence reports indicated this network is responsible for threats to coalition aircraft," the military said in a statement without elaborating. ...

Terrorist Propaganda and LiveLeak

The image above was posted to LiveLeak yesterday evening, with the caption:
"Traitors get justice... comming soon to a theater near you"

There is no accompanying video, and one can only assume there will be (or has been) a mass execution of the people in the photograph, to be released in video format on LiveLeak at a later date.

While the goal of LiveLeak may seem noble on it's surface, one must ask at what point a line has been crossed. The volume of insurgent snuff-films and terror propaganda videos found at western owned and operated websites is staggering, and on the rise.

These videos propagate the terrorist's message of hate, are useful for recruiting and perhaps even contribute to their financing through revenue sharing programs at such sites as Google Video, YouTube, Meta Cafe, Revver, Panjea and Eefoof.

One can only hope that the NSA and other government agencies are keeping close tabs on these sites, and tracking the people who are regularly posting these videos of executions, torture and attacks on coalition forces... but I wouldn't want to bet on it.

Iraq Convicts Ten More Terrorists

CCCI convicts 10 insurgents One sentenced to 30 years, three sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.

BAGHDAD, Iraq – The Central Criminal Court of Iraq convicted 10 security detainees from Feb. 18 - 22, for various crimes including possession of illegal weapons, possessing fake identification, use of explosives, passport violations and illegal border crossing.

The trial court found an Iraqi man guilty of illegal possession of special category weapons in violation of Order 3/2003 Section 6, Paragraph 2B. On Jan. 19, 2005, MNF conducted a raid on several houses in Taji searching for the defendant and several other individuals. The defendant’s brother led MNF to the defendant’s house. Inside they found a locked door that the defendant said was empty and the temperature change had swelled the door shut. MNF broke down the door and inside they found: one RPK machine gun, one AK-47, a pistol, one G3 assault rifle, Iraqi and CIA intelligence manuals and documents as well as many fake identification documents and photographs. The defendant admitted to MNF that he was once an Iraqi intelligence officer. MNF then searched outside the house using metal detectors and found more buried weapons and ammunition. Some of the ammunition was found in American ammunition boxes with serial numbers that matched the serial numbers of ammunition boxes taken from Humvees which had recently been destroyed by IEDs’ in which two American Soldiers died. On Feb. 18 the trial panel found the defendant guilty and sentenced him to 30 years imprisonment.

The trial court found an Iraqi man guilty of illegal possession of special category weapons in violation of Order 3/2003 Section 6, Paragraph 2B. On Dec. 25, 2006, MNF conducted a targeted raid to capture the defendant. The defendant is a weapons dealer and has sold weapons to various groups on many occasions. At the point of capture, MNF found an AK-47, a sniper rifle, a PKC machine gun, an RPG, two pistols, a rifle and assorted ammunition. At the time of capture the defendant also had fake identification with him. On Feb. 19 the trial panel found the defendant guilty and sentenced him to 15 years imprisonment.

The trial court found two Iraqi men guilty of illegal possession of special category weapons in violation of Order 3/2003 Section 6, Paragraph 2B. On Nov. 11, 2006, MNF were conducting census operations near Fallujah. MNF entered one defendant’s home and noticed both defendants acting nervous. Because of their behavior, MNF began a search of their home. MNF first discovered one loaded AK-47 magazine under a mattress on the second floor of the home. MNF continued their search and discovered the following weapons: two AK-47’s, seven AK-47 loaded magazines, four fan switches, two 9mm pistols, one blasting cap, one RPG trigger assembly, anti-MNF propaganda and numerous types of ammunition. At the hearing MNF presented two eye witnesses, photographs and a sketch. On Feb. 20 the trial panel found the defendants guilty and sentenced them each to 15 years imprisonment.

Those convicted of immigration violations, taking advantage of someone else’s legal documents, use of explosives and illegal possession of special category weapons were sentenced from one to 30 years imprisonment. Those convicted totaled nine Iraqis and one Palestinian.

Since its reorganization, under an amendment to CPA order 13, in April 2004, the Central Criminal Court has held 1,902 trials for Coalition-apprehended insurgents. The proceedings have resulted in the conviction of 1,640 individuals with sentences ranging up to death.

Islamic State of Iraq: #1 In Beheading Murders For Allah

I see that the Islamic State of Iraq had claimed a number beheadings on their English language (Google owned blogspot, of course) website today. Most of the beheadings took place before the security crackdown. But it's worthy of note that they have started using the term "beheading" again when referring to their victims. They usually use the term "Implementing Allah's rule" as a general euphemism for any kind of murder (ie, when the physically capture a person and then kill them as opposed to an "operation" which generally means a straightforward attack).

It's also worth noting that since Zawahiri repremanded Zarqawi for turning the Ummah off due to his excessiveness in decapitating hostages, there have been very few beheading claims from Iraq. There have been many beheadings, but no one wanted to claim responsibility. Bad PR. Until now.

You'll have to excuse al Qaeda in Iraq's poor grammar and spellling. Apparently they don't run this copy by Orange County's finest, Azzaz al-Amreki:

1-Beheading two leaders in Ghadr "Badr" corps and 12 other activists in different regions of Baaqouba city, and taking as booties their personal arms, many of their cars and an important sum of money during a short period (less than one week) until Thursday 2/2/2007.

2- Beheading two spies working for the crusader forces in Baaqouba city on Thursday 2/2/2007....

4- Beheading the called "Mahdi Hussain al-Aazawee" in al-Mafraq , he was an officer lieutenant in what is called " Security Preservation forces in al-Kadhemeya region" and an inhabitant of al-Aazzat region, and taking as a booty his personal car on Thursday 2/2/2007

9- Beheading an apostate policeman in al-Mafraq region, he was from inhabitants of "Delli Aabbas" region, on Tuesday 16/1/2007.

On Wednesday 21/2/2007, the Mujahedeen beheaded the called "Deyaa Aabd al-Hussain" in Baghdad province "by the grace of Allah".....

1- Beheading two soldiers from what is called the Interior Maghaweer in al-Katoun/al-Rahma region, on Monday 22/1/2007....

5- Beheading four elements from Ghadr "Badr" corps in al-Mafraq region , on Tuesday 23/1/2007.

21- Beheading an element of the apostate police in al-Mafraq region, on Sunday 6/1/2007,

They also brag about murdering a woman.
17- Implementing Allah's rule on a spy woman working for the crusaders forces in al-Mafraq region , on Saturday 5/1/2007.
When I first read this I was hoping that “implemented Allah’s rule” on a woman meant they had some mercy and shot her. Then I read this….
14-Implementing the rule of Allah on an apostate from the national guards of the rank of captain and putting his slaughtered head in Beeji market on 19/2/2007.
It's not clear what, if anything, the return to beheadings by al Qaeda linked groups in Iraq means. It certainly is a change of tactics--at least to publicly claim beheadings, once again. We'll see whether or not Zawahiri gives his stamp of approval to the new al Qaeda emir's tactics.

The new leader, Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, is said to have personally beheaded hostages on a few videos produced under Zarqawi's tenure. Perhaps he's just a psychopath that really likes it?

Three suspected foreign terrorist facilitators were captured in operations northeast of Samarra, and eight more were captured in a foreign fighter safe house west of Mahmudiyah.

In downtown Ramadi, Coalition Forces captured two suspects in a foreign fighter safe house. Intelligence reports indicated members of the cell were allegedly planning suicide operations against Coalition or Iraqi Forces.

Troops Find Chemical Bomb Factory

Following up on Rusty's post here. We have found an apparent car bomb factory loaded with chemicals.

AP Via Yahoo News: BAGHDAD, Iraq - U.S. troops raided a car bomb factory west of Baghdad with five buildings full of propane tanks and ordinary chemicals the military believes were to be used in bombs, a spokesman said Thursday, a day after insurgents blew up a truck carrying chlorine gas canisters.

Maj. Gen. William Caldwell said the chlorine attack Wednesday — the second such "dirty" chemical attack in two days — signaled a change in insurgent tactics, and the military was fighting back with targeted raids....

...tips led U.S. troops to a five separate buildings near Fallujah, where they found chemical munition, three vehicle bombs being assembled, including a truck bomb, about 65 propane tanks and "all kinds of ordinary chemicals," Caldwell said. He added that he believed the insurgents were going to try to mix the chemicals with explosives.

Good news. It is unknown if these are the same terrorists responsible for the recent chlorine attacks. But it seems likely.
