Chinese Missile Destroys Satellite

There is concern that the Chinese have not only launched a missile to shoot down a satellite but, at the same time, they have launched a new weapons race. Just ducky.

From The Age:

The US State Department has confirmed that on January 12, China used a land-based ballistic missile to collide with its ageing satellite, which was orbiting 865 kilometres above the Earth.

The enormous forces involved smashed the satellite into tens of thousands of pieces, creating a mass of space debris.

China's move appears to have caught Western nations by surprise. Experts believe that China has been provoked into staging this very public demonstration of its capabilities by the US's insistence on creating its global anti-ballistic missile system, in which Australia is to play a part.

They fear China's feat will encourage other countries to follow suit, placing the world's transportation, navigation and communication systems at risk.

The Chinese have introduced the new field of anti-satellite warfare to counter the American global anti-ballistic missile system. So, in response to a U.S. defensive weapon, China develops a new offensive capability, while creating an orbit full of debris.

1 Mike.  I've been observing he Chineese space program too.  Their craft while new has quite a bit of potential.  Once proven it will be versitile and modular.  Quite a neat little toy.  I say this becuase well if they get there before us what's to stop them from claiming this or that.  Once claims get started it could get very interesting.  So far we are behind on our next generation plans.  If China does intend to have a presence and a military capability we have to exceed theirs.  It's important.  Star Wars or that least Moon/Mars race/wars may come sooner than we think.  Think of what this capability could do on earth as well as in the race for rare recources in space.

2 Funny thing is that folks over at huffpost are blaming our foreign policy for that, taking a rather forgiving view of China for its new missile technology.  I guess it doesn't occur to some people that maybe for the Chinese, it's all just about proving to us and the rest of the world who's got the big alpha penis now.  Middle Kingdom mentality and all, you know...

3 they have launched a new weapons race.

Here we go again.  I wonder how much of that technology they got from Bill Clinton.

4 Hmphhhh.......the liberals in the US are proud of all Chinese military accomplishments, and are banking on the Chinese saving them from the evil conservatives in their own country. If this is not an indication that liberalism is a mental illness, I don't know what is.

5 Good point, Jesusland Carlos. That is exactly what happened. Clinton gave them billions of dollars worth of technology for a few measly millions in campaign contributions and under the table cash. He and Jimmy Carter are a pair. Both of them are in the pay of America's worst enemies. Shameful!

6 New race?! Had we listened to Ronnie 220years ago we would already have won the race. Ronnie once again was right! The liberal Republicans who give lip service to defending American are/were once again wrong.(of course in my opinion the lefty Republicans are *always* wrong - I admit to being conservative.)
We can all thank G. Bush the First who single handedly with Chappauidick Ted's help killed"Star Wars" 16 years ago. I guess I should give some credit to JFK who did vote against it and never for it.

8 OMGZ!!!11111!
How can we have the moonbat "Gene Roddenberry" envisioned future like "Star Trek" if they weaponize space! these weapons should at least be set to "Stun"??

Seriously, this is a move to disable the United States ability to defend Taiwan - couple this with the Anti-Aircraft carrier warheads they have been experimenting with. Only a fool would not attack Taiwan while our hands are tied with Iraq, Iran, Syria and Afghanistan.

9 Of course Wal-Mart insists on purchasing everything from China giving them the money for their star wars.

There is a more important issue. We have counter the Chinese threat. They may have shot a missle into outer space but we opened the first drive-thru McDonald's in China today. Now we will see who wins the race. Chinese missles or the Big Mac attack. I'm betting on the big Mac.

10 Here's the big secret.

It wasn't an anti-satellite missile.

It was supposed to be a new weather satellite.

There was a little flub at mission control, and so they've decided to take advantage of it.

11 Hilarious. Another blustering attempt by China to convince an already bamboozled world into believing it really is a world power. Without American satelittes and space technology to connect it to the modern world, and American markets to dump its shitty manufactured goods in, China would fall back into the Dark Ages in a matter of days.

China is a joke. Its space program is a cosmetic joke. More than 90% of it's population wear homemade shoes and have no electricity. China cant even purify its fucking drinking water, or provide full time utility services to its capitol city, and we're supposed to believe it's a threat to American primacy?

China is a third rate middle power with a first rate PR team. Our own people--foolish business interests trying to sell goods and services to a billion penniless peasants, and leftist traitors that salivate over a communist triumph over the hated America--are helping to promote the fable of a China ascendant. Americans tend to be more gullible about China than any other country on the planet. Hell, China's best and brightest go to college here or in Canada--and never go home.

Their pathetic missile launch at a broken satellite in a rapidly deteriorating orbit was pure bravado. Meanwhile, America is still the only nation capable of putting a base on the moon, which is an eventuality that will be spurred on by just this type of bellicose behaviour on the part of the world's second and third stringers.

Carlos and Templar are right. We can thank Bill Clinton for China's missile technology, and moonbat nuts like Pule have posted comments on this very site calling for China to aid the left-wing "freedom fighters" in overthrowing the "evil neocon regime" in America. As always, leftist quislings are our most insidious enemy.

America almost certainly has orbital weapons platforms, and a weapons platform on the moon is next. Bush wants to see a base built on the moon, but he knows it cant happen under his Presidency.

America rules near space. We have no real competitors. I'm not worried about the organ harvesting, daughter drowning, peasant starving, urine drinking, Chinese party rulers. Those Crouching Tiger, Hidden Human Rights midget dicks don't have the nuclear capability to wipe out America, but America could wipe out China a hundred times over--and we should.

12 Jeff:
This is all in preparation to confront us in Naval warfare over Taiwan:

They suggest that certain cutting-edge technologies are likely to first be applied to naval warfare.”
They point out how China could adopt several asymmetrical approaches to defeating a larger and
more powerful navy. These approaches include disabling the more powerful navy by attacking its
space-based communications and surveillance systems and even attacking naval units from space.
Shen writes, "The mastery of outer space will be a prerequisite for naval victory with outer space
becoming the new commanding heights for naval combat.
" Ships at sea will carry out anti
reconnaissance strikes against space satellites and other space systems. “The side with
electromagnetic combat superiority will make full use of that Assassin's Mace weapon to win naval
victory.” They believe that direct attacks on naval battlefields will become possible from outer space
because “naval battle space is going to expand unprecedently.”

That particular quote by Captain Shen Zhongchang , was made in 1996.
The people might be poor, but that didn't stop Russia being a threat, either.

You called it. The intenions of China, I mean. Remember. America used to worry about Soviet capability, until we found out they were hopelessly incompetent all along.

China is a thousand times more incompetent than the Ruskies ever were. Their EM pulse cannons are light years behind ours, and they're way too fucking stupid to have developed sheilding from them.

America will deatroy China eventually. I just hope I live to see the day.

14 Jeff:
China's plan is not to destroy us with conventional warfare, because lets face it that is not going to turn out well for them. Their plan is to turn technology against us by detonating HERF/EMP weapons to disable U.S Destroyers AEGIS capabilities, once this occurs they can fly their junk pile planes, and chug their diesel submarines into the kill zone. Same with the Satellite killing vehicles they have launched, they think by blinding us, we'll be like a punch drunk (heavy-weight) boxer flailing around looking for something to hit. One of their plans it to "leapfrog" technology, instead of designing weapons that are twenty-years behind us, like Tanks etc, they want to create laser weapons, multi-warhead missiles etc.

Fortunately, the Chinese are years behind us technology wise, and require Russia, Europe, Iran and even Israel to sell them engines, computer systems and military technology -- what they have done now is effectively green lighted the U.S national interest to weaponize space, to protect our communication networks.

We do need to keep an eye on China, because they are building up in the interest of confronting us on Taiwan to project both regional, and superpower status, that is undisputed their Generals have wrote as such.
I have no doubt they could defeat a Aircraft carrier fleet with "Sunburn" missiles, and HERF/EMP weaponry that close to China, the problem is of course is keeping up the tempo, and the initiative -- they have no Aircraft Carriers, no airlift capability to speak of, so they would be at the mercy of our own EMP/FCG based weaponry, thermo-baric bombs, and other assorted top-secret shit we bring out once a decade to beat someone back into the stone age with.

I like to beat the ol' chest, and say "America, Fuck Yeah!" like everyone else, but the days of conventional warfare is done. China will no more confront us on conventionally, than Hezbollah did Israel.

We need to either let Taiwan chose it's own path (bad idea) or spend much more money on the tools of war, which will not be possible under a liberal administration.

Jeff Bargholz has a point about the Chinese directed energy projects being behind. And I know we are well in advance in every other field except of course, having a hundred million reservists, or whatever it is now. Davec is on  target, but I doubt the military planers will move on taiwan soon.

The J-10 fighter is unreliable, and they have only managed a few dozens in tewn plus years of development, and available information indicates there are no breakthrough desgn features. I recall they had to get SU-27's from the Russians, to have anything really new, and thats still only a few dozens.

Their home grown top of the line sub is still a desiel electric, so aggressive ASW operations can deal with them. I don't know what went wrong with that carrier incident, but I suspect it was similar to the Israeli ship that had it's defenses on standby when it took that missile a few months back.   Ther is no reason to believe their sub capability is anywhere near as cool as that lucky' occurance would suggest.

I could go on, but lets sum up by saying that their core weapons systems are from the sixties. They are so dependent on our economy that getting back one little island isn't worth the cost in treasure if it can be done diplomatically. They are not arming to attack OUR interests. Thay are arming to secure the mainland against political economic rivals, and any threat to their resources. They don't need a modern army for that, and they have a reason to hope we will keep out of such conflicts when they occur.

China will eventually be a real space power, barring global catastrophy, and that will make things interesting, no doubt.

Frankly, I'm with Greyrooster, and believe that capitalism is going to win. It still won't look like our version for quite awhile.

USA, all the way!

I agree with you. But China's ambitions overreach its capability. It will never provoke a confrontaion with America that is likely to end in humiliation and failure. Its desire to seize Taiwan is a half century old, and it still hasn't been acted on militarily.

America is the master of unconventional weaponry, and will be throughout the 21st century.

China's ambitions and risible war machine are fed by American markets. The day will come when America closes down the feeding trough.

Michael Weaver: China's space program is a bigger sham than the Russians' ever was. Not even Hilary Clinton could sabotage America's primacy in near space.

17 Maybe we can pay the commies to knock out satellites that broadcast Al-Manar and Al-Zawraa.

I don't know why everyone's getting upset. They destroy a satellite and their internet access will be shut off. Can you imagine the impact and addicted rage of over half a billion MMO gold farmers would do to a totalitarian establishment?

18 Jeff:
I wish we would create a lot more effective, but cheaper weaponry -- we always do not have the amount of the latest fighter plane, or the newest submarine because of the high price of R&D, manufacturing and testing.
That is one area the Communists excelled, they created inferior weapons, but lots and lots of them - expecting the ratio of 20:1 to take care of the technology mismatch.

20 Yes the Chinese are probably 20  years behind, but it's a different behind that it used to be.  Thngs move faster these days.  I disagree that their space vehicle is crap.  It is unproven. I see the potential of the three piece design they have.  Especially if they can link the service modules to form larger structures.  It may turn out to be junk but the concept is pretty solid.

We shoud be thinking about how to construct a ship that is constructed and stays in space.to move these new crewed exploration vehicles.  The "space ship" is what we are missing. The space station should be used as a space station.  Duh. If we don't shell out some bucks and get moving we may not stay far ahead for long.

22 The American space shuttles are more than 20 years old, and although they're outdated pieces of crap, they're still superior to anything the Chinese can build. The commies are a hell of lot more than 20 years behind us.

Americans don't want to spend money on NASA, and NASA is a black hole of outdated thinking. Even so, I haven't seen the Chinese come up with anything that will put them in our league.

China's only skills are making money on slave labor and convincing a gullible world that it's a superpower. I'm not too impressed with a culture that thinks drinking urine is therapeutic.

Estimated production of the F-35 will hit one complete fuselage per day, or about 365 per year, and that's not even considering that we are still producing other warplanes.  China after ten years has about 20% (70?) planes of the SU-27, or J-10 type after about a decade of trying. Their other actual aircraft totals arent that impressive, and depend on designs from the Korean, and Vietnam war eras. We would own them in the air.

As for the cost of US equipment compared to Chinese equipment, It doesn't matter if an AK-47 is only a hundred dollars in Africa, if you don't have a hundred dollars to spend. Our economy can buy better, and stay numericaly even. That is why China will not be able to build the numbers needed to compete with our technological superiority. There is only one 'number' that they will always have an advantage in, and thats population. That DOES pose a threat. Men on the ground is the ultimate necessity in taking territory.

A vet once told me that China entered the Korean war, by handing a rifle and twelve bullets to each of about a million men, and aimed them south. When the wave had reached his AA positions, they had largely ran out of bullets, and thousands surged forward using bayonets. They had already set their positions to blow, so the Chinese wouldn't capture equipment.

He took a bayonet thrust through his leg as he climbed onto the back of one of the last trucks out of there, and he got the guy to let go by emptying his Govt .45 into the guys face. Basically the Chinese were attacking with 'spears' on that part of the line. Like we also discussed once earlier, even rocks are deadly weapons, if you have enough healthy people throwing them.

But in Asia, human life is as cheap as the rice it takes to feed them, and at a man to man level, fancy only goes so far. If ten guys charge you, and only three reach you alive, your still in a world of hurt. Since we don't want to take out China, that isn't our problem. Since China can't reach us, that isn't our problem. Since everywhere else in Asia has a huge population, if China wants to tip the scales against THEM, it will only need to compete technologically with THEM, and they just need to find a way to keep us from taking sides.

Because we can break all of their toys without putting boots on the ground. We could, and if really forced to, we could kill their economy in a matter of days if we use all our NEWEST toys. They would be down to rice, and spears in pretty short order, of that I'm fairly certain.

They can get into space, and I believe they feel it is a matter of National destiny, and pride to do so.  Their technology can be 40 years old, and still accomplish this. BUT they can't do it all at once.

Becoming a new superpower will depend on their economy, and that revolves around US. Walmart alone, is one of their largest export markets. Picture what any war involving the US, would do to that market.  Picture what 48 hours of airstrikes on Iranian port, and oil facilities could do to their (China's) economy. They are tangled up, and that is a good thing.

We are more godlike in global terms that we often realize, and that is why others are so afraid of us. It's why Islam is after US, because we can stop the Jihad, if we get our act together. It's why Europe whines about us doing the right thing when it screws with their oil deals. It's why the left has to keep finding things to complain about, because they can't pull an elitist power shift if we are obviously on top. If we're the best, why change? So the left is scared of our power as well.

I think China knows which way the wind blows if war comes. They will play politics instead.  We kind of suck at that lately, so it's a good idea for them to stick to it.

Ok, so that's my opinion, and have a good one.

USA, all the way!

"Soldiers have to be fed, clothed and supported.

I agree with you to a point. Against their physical neighbors they could do quite well in terms of a total war. Napoleon had his troops forage off the land to avoid slow supply trains, and this is one of the secrets to his success. If you have the moral vacuum to wage a total war, and strip the land as you advance, you will supply yor army, and starve the resistance all at the same time. That is consistant with brutality, and expediency that we have already seen from countries like China, before. I see no reason they would do this in the absence of a genuine threat to their existence.

Like I said, they need our economy as well, and we CAN break all their toys if we needed to do so.  I don't see China as a threat to the US, or anyone they know that we would fight to defend. Frankly, I believe they have not tried to conquer North Korea, less because of political kinship, than because it would put them immediately at odds with South Korea, and the US.

Anyway. I think we agree China has a lot of catching up to do, and it'll be awhile.
