Welcome to the Hotel Sharia in Malaysia

I often wonder why my Christian friend from Malaysia says he'll never go back. Today Michelle helps me understand.

Via Michelle Malkin: Last August, I wrote about the plight of an ex-Muslim woman in Malaysia named Lina Joy. She had converted to Christianity and wanted to marry a Christian man. As the Abdul Rahman case made chillingly clear to the world, there are dire consequences for leaving Islam. Joy bravely went to court to stop being identified as a Muslim--and earned death threats and family disavowal for her apostasy. Now, the verdict is in. Sharia wins, Lina Joy loses:
"You can't at whim and fancy convert from one religion to another," Federal Court Chief Justice Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim said in delivering judgment in the case, which has stirred religious tensions in the mainly Muslim nation.
Muslims cheered:
Islam, like most other cults, follows the "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave" rule.

1 So if she were a Christian who wanted to convert to Muslim that would not be allowed either?

2 Oh no, they are programmed to receive.  You can convert to Islam from any faith any old time.

3 Howie,

You seem bothered by foreign customs.  The question I have for you is:  how exactly do we go about changing the culture of a billion muslims at this stage?  Ruling out military action (which as Iraq has proven - does more harm than good), can we speak or act with any moral authority - I mean now that our side has embraced torture and other less than civilized principles?

Over to you...

4 Yeah Bo, I know what you mean. On my lunch break, I just saw a man and woman's hands cut off in Times Square because they were holding hands but weren't married (even better to watch than a stoning!). Over to ewe...

5 Good article Howie!   And Bo ... I suppose some of us Do have problems with foriegn customs.  I have a problem with the customs that the Nazi's instituted, where it was OK to shove millions of men women and children into gas chambers and ovens.  I can see your point, how making some guy wear underwear on his head equates with that. You have TOTALLY changed my mind

                                    USA, all the way!

6 I just spent two weeks in Dubai, which is in the United Arab Emerites.  I spoke to lots of people about what is happening and a vast majority of them, even though they are the most pro-west arabs there are, expressed absolute hatred towards Americans for what they have done in Iraq.  They are very informed about what happened at Abu Ghrab, and they know all about how the American government made up excuses based on cooked intelligence to invade a sovereign nation.

I also felt comfortable but totally out of place in the customs and ways of their society - which is still heavily controlled by religious laws.  And I remain convinced having seen this first-hand that for us to try and change or influence their deep rooted customs is absolutely bound to fail.  And the fact of the matter is:  Islamic / sharia law is not compatible with western styled democracy.  Give them a democracy and they will elect a theocratic regime which immediately erodes all civil liberties.  We should not be sending young men off to die for a hopeless cause.

7 Mr. Weaver,

Whatever your concerns are about the Nazi's rest assured that your government did not go to war with them because they violated human rights.

8 Bo, They can hate us all they want, they already did. To say that they loved us before Abu Ghrab is a joke - where have you been for the last 40 years?
