WaPo Started Jessica Lynch Myth Despite Warning From Military

Ray Robison, writing in The American Thinker, reveals the true genesis of the Jessica Lynch myth:

...the story of her shoot-out with Iraqi forces was not a product of the US military but of the US media.

The US media created this recounting of her exploits from vague, unofficial statements by "undisclosed officials" and having been revealed as rumor mongers started looking for someone to blame. Who else would they pin it on but the US military?

Robison cites this Washington Post story as the first time that Lynch was incorrectly reported as having shot several Iraqi soldiers. This story was the catalyst for other media accounts, despite this warning from the article:
Several officials cautioned that the precise sequence of events is still being determined, and that further information will emerge as Lynch is debriefed. Reports thus far are based on battlefield intelligence, they said, which comes from monitored communications and from Iraqi sources in Nasiriyah whose reliability has yet to be assessed. Pentagon officials said they had heard "rumors" of Lynch's heroics but had no confirmation.
Of course now, media and other anti-war forces are trying to paint the military as having created the Jessica Lynch myth.

1 Kinda sounds like Katrina huh? My question is why didnt Pvt Lynch debunk this publicly before the hearings. Maybe I'm missing something but it kind of looks like she was'nt too keen on setting the record straight until after the boob job.

4 D-lo. I seem to remember her or somebody trying to clarify the truth after the hero stories came out but they were ignored.

I just get so irritated that if the army gets one detail wrong on any initial report it is proof positive that Bush is behind some nefarious conspiracy but when the media screws the pooch beyond belief as in all the outrageous rumors they ran during Katrina they just ignore it and act like...anybody can make a mistake. Watching the Bill Moyers special last night on how the noble media were all mislead by evil Bush made me want to puke when Moyers and Dan "fake memo" Rather actually had the nerve to talk about how if you tell a lie enough times the people believe it. They were referring to Bush oblivious of the irony.

5 "kind of looks like she was'nt too keen on setting the record straight until after the boob job."

Nice smear dick. When were you planning on putting your sorry excuse for an ass on the line?

I mean gee... who do you suppose those "sources" were? Were they the same sources who leaked the story about the aluminum tubes to the NY Times as mentioned on Moyer's show last night?

javascript:playerPopUp('http://www.crooksandliars.com/Media/Play/16671/2/Bill-Moyers-Cheney-Russert.mov/','340','300')

And how's about the case of Pat Tillman? You sure don't have much to say there do you? The millitary was more than happy to keep that little mix up quiet. I wonder how many kids were conned into joining up after they touted the football hero turned soldier as a marytr who died for the cause?

Ah well... every so slowly, all of this is coming out in the wash. Nice work trying to weasel your way into believing that nothing sketchy is going on. I imagine Bin Laden does exactly the same thing.

6 I wonder how many kids

Just like a no responsibility commie to call 18 years olds kids. They are just wittle babies. They have no free will. They can't choose...they must of been tricked. Must need some more government to watch out for us. It must be a dark sick world you live in John.

And the Moyer's show was a joke. Nothing like him and him and Dan Rather piously talking about if you tell a lie enough times people believe it. Irony is lost on morons like them and you.

8 So are you saying that the military doesn't try to manipulate people into joining? That they don't promise careers, and all sorts of goodies in their goofy commercials? I mean hey... if people can't be manipulated into joining the army, why bother creating commercials, or trumping up the brave sacrifice of Pat Tillman?

Rather got duped. That's for sure, but I don't think he faked those memos any more than I think Karl Rove generated them to deliberately create this exact situation. This of course does nothing to detract from the connections Moyers made. Ignore them if you will, but every day you become a bigger and bigger chump.

9    Nice try "john" Why dont you try thinking for yourself instead of regurgitating talking points. You mention crooksandliars I hear white noise.

Chickenhawk chickenhawk blah, blah blah,  Been there done that slick, Mar 03-Feb 04 I knew the truth about Lynch's ambush/crash and the after action review while still in country and that was with limited accsess to internet news sites. And let me head you off at the pass it was MSM sites before you accuse me of only reading "propaganda".

I wont try to defend the Tillman situation it was handled poorly but I dont think I mentioned it in my previous post. My point was, now follow me, the Jessica Lynch story was created by the media and nobody cared including Lynch herself until this hearing.
