Video: Kurdistan, The Iraq You Don't See

Credit where it's due. 60 Minutes shows Iraq's dirty little secret, a fairly peaceful Kurdistan. Of course, the bad news is the Kurds are surrounded by Turks that hate them, Persians Iranians that hate them, and Arabs that hate them.

When visiting Kurdistan, one can see nation-building wherever one looks—Kurds are building their country day by day. There are more cranes here than minarets and there’s a run on cement. A new mall with 8,000 shops and stalls is going up. So is an apartment complex known as "Dream City," in which some of the units are selling for $1 million. A giant bowling alley is almost finished, and an opera house is not far behind. What’s behind the boom? Security.

You can watch the video here.

1 Just one correction Vinnie,
Persians don't hate Kurds. In fact, the two ethnicities have the same roots.
The Islamic Regime of Iran, however, does hate them and has on many occasions in the past 27 years harassed and murdered innocent Kurds. But of course, this brutailty is to be expected from the IRI since Islamists are quintessentially bigots.

[FYI The Persian language and the Kurdish language have the same grammar and
derive from a common root called "Pahlavi" which western historians
call middle Iranian.]

The Kurds don't seem to have any friends in the MSM. It's nice to see a little boost in their 'ratings'.               USA, all the way!

3 Sorry GM, I'm still a little upset over that Thermopylae thing.

Sure, it was thousands of years ago, but I can carry a grudge.

:-)

4 still a powderkeg, let's hope the Kurds avoid any alliances of
convenience with Israel.

5 Hey no problem Vinnie :-)

As for the Kurds, I can see two reasons why they are flourishing:
a) Their own culture which is a culture of life and work as opposed to Islamist death and destruction
b) The fact that Kurdistan has been rid of tyrannts like Saddam for about 15 years thanks to the shared bravery of the coalition forces and the Kurds themselves. [Kurdistan was a no-fly zone for Saddam for nearly a decade before Operation Iraqi Freedom.]

And as for Thermopylae: Have a look at the book of Queen Esther in the Old Testament. She tells you what kind of  man King Xerxes was :-)

6 ... I just meant the Kurds have been free for much longer than the rest of Iraq. I hope my previous statement is not misconstrued.

7 Ken Hoop ... Yeah, those convenient 'non-isolationist' type of alliances are so inconvenient. I can't help but think how much better the cold war might have turned out if we hadn't been involved with that NATO thingy .... NOT!  I really can't stand isolationists. I regard them as a personal pain in the ass. Anyone who wants to hide under their little blanky waiting for the big scary evil world to go away, is a first rate loser in my opinion!  I always, ALWAYS associate isolationist talk with the image of someone walking past a rape in progress because it is really none of their business, and it doesn't involve them. Sick! Disgusting! Cowardly! You put the CON in Paleocon! Anti-Israeli bigot!

9 I'll check ol' Esther later tonight, GM, but not until I view the Testament of Jack Bauer.

10 Kurds are not in the news because good news is not news. If we care to look at it that way. The Kurds are playing everyone they can. Not that I blame them. But trusting a muslim is stupid.

Ken Poop. Shut up asshole. May your muslim boyfriend give you the camel clap.

11 Can someone help a brother out and explain why the colonials didn't give the Kurds a country?

The post World War(s) carve up seems to have caused more wars than any other single event.

12 No one thought of it. The Kurds were so beaten down at the time they just didn't make enough noise. Armenians either. I can't understand it either. After WW1 who cared about the Turks?
