The St. Petersburg Declaration

Released by the delegates to the Secular Islam Summit, St. Petersburg, Florida on March 5, 2007:

We are secular Muslims, and secular persons of Muslim societies. We are believers, doubters, and unbelievers, brought together by a great struggle, not between the West and Islam, but between the free and the unfree.

We affirm the inviolable freedom of the individual conscience. We believe in the equality of all human persons.

We insist upon the separation of religion from state and the observance of universal human rights.

We find traditions of liberty, rationality, and tolerance in the rich histories of pre-Islamic and Islamic societies. These values do not belong to the West or the East; they are the common moral heritage of humankind.

We see no colonialism, racism, or so-called “Islamaphobia” in submitting Islamic practices to criticism or condemnation when they violate human reason or rights.

We call on the governments of the world to
reject Sharia law, fatwa courts, clerical rule, and state-sanctioned religion in all their forms; oppose all penalties for blasphemy and apostacy, in accordance with Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human rights;

eliminate practices, such as female circumcision, honor killing, forced veiling, and forced marriage, that further the oppression of women; protect sexual and gender minorities from persecution and violence;

reform sectarian education that teaches intolerance and bigotry towards non-Muslims;

and foster an open public sphere in which all matters may be discussed without coercion or intimidation.

We demand the release of Islam from its captivity to the totalitarian ambitions of power-hungry men and the rigid strictures of orthodoxy.

We enjoin academics and thinkers everywhere to embark on a fearless examination of the origins and sources of Islam, and to promulgate the ideals of free scientific and spiritual inquiry through cross-cultural translation, publishing, and the mass media.

We say to Muslim believers: there is a noble future for Islam as a personal faith, not a political doctrine;

to Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, Baha’is, and all members of non-Muslim faith communities: we stand with you as free and equal citizens;

and to nonbelievers: we defend your unqualified liberty to question and dissent.

Before any of us is a member of the Umma, the Body of Christ, or the Chosen People, we are all members of the community of conscience, the people who must chose for themselves.

1 Perhaps more of this could be in the mainstream media.... I seriously doubt it though.

2 Sounds good. We'll see if anyone besides the Jawa commenters ever hear of it again. Doubt it.

3 Muslims have a long record  [over 1000 years]  proving that they can not live peaceable,  even amongst themselves.  That they are violent and a certain danger to every non-Muslim living amongst them is beyond dispute.  They are particularly brutal when they are in the majority. Tolerance and diversity are such horrible liberal jokes to begin with but when juxtaposed with the Mo-hammed people they are a heinous crimes.

If the participants at the Secular Islam Summit were to have signed  that same document in public,  let's say in Egypt they would have been arrested and  brought before an Islamic court..

I don't see how Islam can be reformed without a Stupendous Ass Kicking first.

It has been established that when Islam is about to go to war against infidels, they make a gesture to the future victim, asking the infidels to accept Muhammed's message. bin Laden himself, has done this.

In a sense, the shoe is now on the other foot. Islam is being offered a chance to accept the message of modern liberty, and human rights. This is not an empty gesture . Islam cannot gnore this movement, because it resonates with those who have been seeking justice for all. Islam must either embrace this reform, or it must expose itself as the enemy of justice, that cannot be compromised with.

Those at this summit ARE the moderates I spend my time looking for. There they are! Now it's really up to us to make sure thier message is heard. So spread that message! Don't wait for someone else to do it. Make your friends and family aware of this declaration, and what it means.

This will help force a change if we keep this subject at the front.

USA, all the way!

5 Professor, do you still want to meet some of the elusive muslim moderates? Sounds like you may get your chance after all... please don't think that they have not put themselves at risk just because they are not in Egypt or saudi.

6 Muslims are selling T-shirts in the Quarter. To arms. To arms.

7 I don't really care what you say you are as long as you walk the walk when it comes to protecting our Constitution, and the liberties it respects. Muslim or not. If you stand against that, then we got problems! I'd love to interview some of those folks from that summiot. Great to get the coverage we have even still.

8 When our forefathers wrote the Constitution Islam was not in the equation. It shouldn't be now.

9 Well said Professor,
That's my whole point about being an American first and reinforcing that in word, deed will follow. That sensability is assualted, daily. Here's a little activity that I find interesting. Take a garden variety msm wire story and remove all the words that define religion, race, gender or any thing that has to do with description that has no bearing on the story and see what you get. (But always leave the cursing dear Professor, it's the only thing that brings the full meaning. For example: See Dick run, or See Dick run like a mother f*cker.)

11 Big Respect to the Jawa for this posting. Many Muslims feel more religious freedom in the USA than in their birth countries. The bastards who attacked us were from S.A. and Pakistan not Detroit.
