1 Not sure why this prick was not indicted, though maybe Libby's obstruction of the investigation had something to do with it.

2 Not sure why this prick was not indicted

Because it wasn't a crime, dunce.

though maybe Libby's obstruction of the investigation had something to do with it.

Wrong again. They found out who it was days after the investigation began.

You have no clue what you're talking about.

3 "It was not a crime.."

Funny - they hand out indictments and stiff sentences for no reason then?

4 they hand out indictments and stiff sentences for no reason then?

Illiterate moron-

Did they hand out an indictment for leaking Plame's name and identity?

They didn't? Hmmm...wonder why. Maybe it wasn't a crime after all.

5 Not sure why this prick was not indicted,

That's simple--  because there was no political mileage to be had from indicting him.

6 Good Lt.,
I instinctively speculate that this woman, compelled by her own vanity and in order to impress one or two people, may herself have let on that she was a CIA agent; and then tried to cover up her indiscretion by blaming the government.

7 From the [New York] Times' Tuesday editorial: "Mr. Bush’s assertion that he respected the verdict but considered the sentence excessive only underscored the way this president is tough on crime when it’s committed by common folk ...

"Within minutes of the Libby announcement, the same Republican commentators who fulminated when Paris Hilton got a few days knocked off her time in a county lockup were parroting Mr. Bush’s contention that a fine, probation and reputation damage were 'harsh punishment' enough for Mr. Libby.

"Presidents have the power to grant clemency and pardons. But in this case, Mr. Bush did not sound like a leader making tough decisions about justice. He sounded like a man worried about what a former loyalist might say when actually staring into a prison cell."

The [Washington] Post, which had often mocked the court case, declares today: "We agree that a pardon would have been inappropriate and that the prison sentence of 30 months was excessive. But reducing the sentence to no prison time at all, as Mr. Bush did -- to probation and a large fine -- is not defensible. ... Mr. Bush, while claiming to 'respect the jury's verdict,' failed to explain why he moved from 'excessive' to zero.

"It's true that the felony conviction that remains in place, the $250,000 fine and the reputational damage are far from trivial. But so is lying to a grand jury. To commute the entire prison sentence sends the wrong message about the seriousness of that offense."

Seattle Post-Intelligencer: "President Bush's commutation of a pal's prison sentence counts as a most shocking act of disrespect for the U.S. justice system. It's the latest sign of the huge repairs to American concepts of the rule of law that await the next president."

The Denver Post found that "such big-footing of other branches of government is not unprecedented with this administration. The president's abuse of signing statements show his disrespect for Congress' power to make law. His insistence that terror detainees at Guantanamo Bay be denied Habeas Corpus rights mocks legal tradition. It's a shame that his actions in the Libby affair will add to that list. Libby should be held accountable for his crimes."

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's editorial declares that "mostly this commutation fails on the most basic premise. There was no miscarriage of justice in Libby's conviction or his sentence. The trial amply demonstrated that he stonewalled. Like President Clinton's 11th-hour pardons of an ill-deserving few, this commutation is a travesty."

New York's Daily News: "However misbegotten was the probe by special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, the fact is that Libby did commit a federal crime and the fact is also that he was convicted in a court of law. Thankfully, Bush did not pardon Libby outright, but time in the slammer was in order. Sixty days, say, wouldn't have hurt the justice system a bit."

Chicago Tribune believes that "in nixing the prison term, Bush sent a terrible message to citizens and to government officials who are expected to serve the public with integrity. The way for a president to discourage the breaking of federal laws is by letting fairly rendered consequences play out, however uncomfortably for everyone involved. The message to a Scooter Libby ought to be the same as it is for other convicts: You do the crime, you do the time."

The Arizona Republic: "We thought Scooter Libby was going through the criminal justice system. Just like anyone else. Then, President Bush whipped out a get-out-of-jail-free card. This is the wrong game to play on a very public stage."

San Jose Mercury News: "Other presidents have doled out pardons and the like, usually on the way out of office. It's never pretty. But few have placed themselves above the law as Bush, Cheney and friends repeatedly have done by trampling civil liberties and denying due process. Chalk up another point for freedom. Scooter's, at least."

The Sacramento Bee: President Bush, a recent story in the Washington Post tells us, is obsessed with the question of how history will view him. He has done himself no favors on that count by commuting the prison term of I. Lewis 'Scooter' Libby."

8 Mehr,

I respectfully submit that you are one brainwashed lemming.

Posted by: Bo at July 03, 2007 11:08 AM (euN4c)

9 Good Lt.,

You really are a pompous self-righteous ass.  Of course I know that they did not hand out an indictment for the crime itself.  The investigation never went that far - it does not mean that no crime was committed.

I know your Rovian talking points don't cover those details, and that you are fixated on the "over-zealous prosecutor gone mad" angle - but do know this:

a) Plame was covert.  This has been proven.  Her outing jeapordized our national security, and she was outed because her husband had the audacity to challenge one of the principle fabricated reasons Dick Cheney and the Office of Special Plans cooked up for this war.

b)  This action demonstrates to the American people without a doubt that Republicans like yourself are hypocrites.  You are only for law and order if it fits in with your ideological, paraoid and warmongering outlook.

Posted by: Bo at July 03, 2007 11:16 AM (euN4c)

10 Bo,

Richard Armitage had already admitted outing her.  There was nothing left to investigate, you fucking twit.

It's nice to see bo relying on editorials (opinions) for all of his facts. Too funny.

13 Jesusland,

If you think the media is part of some vast left wing conspiracy then you belong in a rubber room.  And that was just a sampling.  I checked just now and there are a whole lot more of them.

So my dogmatic friend, are you saying that Armitage should have been charged?

If a Republican-appointed prosecutor, a Republican appointed judge and a Grand Jury all unanimously thought Libby guilty of a serious crime (obstruction of justice) - why do you support his get out of jail free card?

Posted by: Bo at July 03, 2007 01:15 PM (euN4c)

14

Sullivan (remember him - the CONSERVATIVE Times columnist and blogger) has been running some excellent blogging on this subject today.

"One aspect of the commutation of Libby's sentence has been overlooked. Libby knows a very great deal about the war crimes of the president and vice-president and even more about the vagaries of the use of WMD intelligence before the war. By commuting his sentence, Bush is obviously trying to ensure that Libby doesn't talk. He is making sure that there's no pressure on Libby to cop a plea and give Fitzgerald more evidence of malfeasance in the White House. A reader explains:

The commutation of this felon's sentence was not a result of arrogance or indifference to the notion of accountability. It was motivated by fear. Libby knows it all, and I mean the whole story. He could expose Bush, Chaney and Rumsfeld as war criminals, and destroy the careers of dozens of others in a matter of minutes. You can be sure that he was told at the outset that he would never see the inside of a jail. The court ruling that packed him off to the slammer immediately triggered the inevitable. It was just a matter of timing.

Another way of seeing this is: obstruction of justice. But, hey, he's the king. According to Addington and Cheney, the president is the justice system."

"I don't believe my role is to replace the verdict of a jury with my own," - George W. Bush on why he signed death warrants for 152 inmates as governor of Texas.

The quote is from his own book, "A Charge To Keep." I think that's a debate-ender, isn't it?

15 The more you quote opinions as your resources for facts, the more you prove your an idiot. Quit while your ahead.

Posted by: Barry at July 03, 2007 01:40 PM (NsWwz)

16 Bo. Sweetheart. Darling.

Armitage was the leaker, and wasn't indicted for leaking. There was no crime. Do you need it in another language? Farsi, perhaps?

NO INDICTMENT FOR LEAKING = NO CRIME COMMITTED. End of story.

Beat your head into a wall - it doesn't change the facts, jackass.

Now go cry.

Posted by: Good Lt at July 03, 2007 01:41 PM (yMbfY)

17 You can debate (as you call it) all you want, but it doesn't in any way change the partisanship of the attack on this administration. You (Bo) are not debating. You are pushing your agenda driven dogma irrespective of fact, or pure logic. You quote typical leftist media opinions, and then presume to imply other commenters are not being thoughtful about all of this.  The truth is Plame was never established as covert, Libby didn't out her, and the left was only after a weapon to tarnish this administration with. It didn't matter how dubious the weapon, as long as enough idiots fall for the ploy, and the left benefits.  There is no debate, because YOU (bo) don't have any worthwhile facts to debate WITH!  Put down the vasoline and the mirror, and go do some research on this, and maybe ... maybe there will finally BE a debate! Till then, your wasting bandwidth.                             USA, all the way!

18 Lt. Dan,

I don't cry - I just get angry.  I get angry because people like you exist.  People who whitewash treason, obfuscate, and bit by bit help destroy the principles on which this nation was founded.  You are a complete disgrace to all the great Republicans that helped forge a legal system that was not supposed to show favouratism.  Everyone was supposed to be equal before the law.

Scooter obstructed the investigation and lied to the Grand Jury.  You don't seem to appreciate the seriousness of the crime.

Scooter did so to protect Cheney and Bush - one of them gave the order to leak classified information.

B already pointed out to you that Fitzgerald said he knew nothing about Armistage outing Plame - this did not come out in the course of his investigation.

You arguements have nothing to stand on.  Zero.

Quit while you're behind.

19 Oh yeah ... telling someone something about someone, that isn't a 'secret',  isn't 'outing' ANYTHING!  The crime here is that we paid tax dollars to see a honest man railroaded. All for the glory of a selfish couple, who whored themselves out to the left for thier own benefit.  I see nothing to debate here, just sayin ...  Plame is just a hooker in expensive clothes, and 'Wilson is her pimp!  That is the world of leftist politics.  Big surpirise.          USA, all the way!

You are another idiot who does not know what he is talking about.  You're simply repeating government sponsored lies and propaganda.

And if you trust the government 1000%, blindly accept their spin, then you too are a disgrace to Republican values.  Especially now / today after all the scandals that have plagued THIS administration, THIS leadership, THIS band of criminals.

The LEFT latched on to this scandal because it is so blatant and obvious.  It is linked to all the cooked intelligence used to con this nation into war.  It also reveals the total hypocricy of the Bush administration - perfectly.  So why wouldn't they latch on to it?  Even a broken clock is right at least twice a day.

Give it up. Persecuting Libby (persecuting) is a crime in itself, and you whine about 'equal'?!  it is grossly unequal to aim the resources of a partisan witch-hunt at a n innocent man, then crow when he is butchered for no good reason!

Your comments are getting more and more insane.

Unjust sentence????  His crime was obstruction of justice and lying to a Grand Jury.  He was tried by a (Republican) judge overseeing an impartial group of 12 men and women.  The sentence was appropriate given the seriousness of the crime - or are you saying lying to a Grand Jury is not a serious matter?

Oh and by the way, Plame was considered the leading expert on Iran's nuclear file - despite the popular opinion in wingnut-land that she had some obscure and insignificant deskjob.

29 Obstruction, like Conspiracy, is a favorite of the Feds your so worried about. It is common knowledge that both are easier to 'prove' because both are dependent on circumstantial evidence. When you want to trash someone for a suppossed crime, but only have flimsy evidence, you go for Conspiracy ... always.  Words taken out of context, or pounced upon if they are mispoken, and when it is to late to make the correction for accuracies sake.  Thats how it is done. So to do the same for a case of 'Obstruction' is pretty easy.  yes, I am sure Scooter is a victim here, and I'm sure you (Bo) don't care about that.              USA, all the way!

Posted by: Michael Weaver at July 03, 2007 02:18 PM (2OHpj)

30 Conspracy is so easy to prosecute, that your real free speech, where you might casually be emoting ... "I'd like to kill that guy ..." becomes a crime as soon as you buy bullets for your hunting rifle. In realitym it's a contrivance, and a sham. I've said I'd like to kill some folks many times over the years, and I have been seen to do things which (for Conspiracy) could be used as evidence at my trial, but which have absolutely nothing to do with my true intentions.  Obstruction is not much different. "I don't know" is translated to " He is trying to block this investigation" by determined prosecutors. Don't pretend this is all news to you, it IS pretty well understood that innocense is no protection from certain federal level prosecutions.         USA, al the way!

33 Weaver,

Why would Fitzgerald want to "trash" Scooter?  Simply for the hell of it?  Is that how things appear to you?

Scooter is no victim.  He is a willing accomplice to a crime and The Boss just took care of his loyal servant.

I don't see Libby falling on hard times...standing in line at the soup kitchen.....sorry.

Posted by: Bo at July 03, 2007 02:27 PM (euN4c)

34 Fitzgerald DOES benefit from successfully persecuting Libby. if only in the kinds of alliances he is able to forge for himself, to further his career. it's the sort of conspiratorial behavior you ascribe to Bushies without a second thought. truth is ... most people in Federal government seem to play the game. I trust Fitzgerald not a bit, and to be honest, maybe Scooter did somedealing somewhere at sometime, but I am sure this occassion is a witch hunt, and YES Scooter is a victim. reputation in tatters, with a Federal Conviction laid upon him, his career is pretty likely dead. he will be pursued by the harpies of the left, for all time. You know this is true, so don't try to minimize the destruction wrought upon this man.  Put yourself in his shoes. I'm giving you credit for empathy, just by asking, but try it out.                                       USA, all the way!

Posted by: Jesusland Carlos at July 03, 2007 03:04 PM (yJKSD)

36 Put myself in his shoes eh?  Well first of all, if I were Scooter I would be convinced now more than ever that The Don will always take care of me.  I have my sugar daddy and I will never have financial worries for the rest of my life.

And I will always be welcome on the neocon lecture circuit - treated as an innocent victim of a partisan witch hunt.

How am I doing in my projection so far???

But you know Mike, this is exactly the kind of mafia government Americans need to bring to an end - especially given the way they have managed the Iraq file.  I mean if things had gone well in Operation Iraqui Freedom.......if they had planned and executed it with due dilligence and competence, not turned us into an international laughing stock, not reduced our reputation to the level previously occupied by the USSR, then I might be pursuaded to let some of this stuff slide a bit.  But the fact of the matter is I believe it is our duty (and the only way to turn this thing around) is to cannibilize the neocons and take away the keys from Bush.  Scooter stood in the way from making that happen - so I can have absolutely no sympathy for the guy.

Here's another gem from Sullivan's website which is in line with my postion:

The commutation of Libby's sentence was a Machiavellian move meant to send a message to people who work for the Administration. The message from the President and the Vice President is "we will protect the loyal".

The script of this presidency is more like the Sopranos than the West Wing.  Like the mafia, loyalty is critical to the survival of this Administration.  Just like the mafia, Cheney and Bush often ask Administration officials to operate outside the law, or at the very least, in the gray area and without Congressional or judicial approval. If Libby were sent to jail, this could have a devastating effect on the loyalty that Administration officials show to Bush and Cheney. The people in the Administration would start to worry more about their own skin and less about pleasing their bosses.

During the next 18 months of the Bush presidency the Democratic Congress will issue subpoenas to Administration officials on any number of scandals emanating from the White House, some known (Iraq and the firing of the prosecutors) and some still unknown.

Any Administration official who is required to testify in Congress and is aware of wrong-doing on the part of the White House will be worried that they could end up in jail like Scooter if they are not hyper-vigilant about the truth. If Scooter went to jail these potential Administration witnesses in future Congressional hearings would be less likely to be "team players" for the White House. The importance of the Libby pardon is that it lets these potential Administration witnesses know that the President will protect them and nobody else will. (See the press and the Democrats howling for Scooter's head.) This will help Bush and Cheney keep a unified front against a hostile Congress.

For those who say Bush had a principled reason for granting clemency... Fogetaboutit.  This is all about self preservation.

Posted by: Bo at July 03, 2007 03:20 PM (euN4c)

37 Jesusland Carlos, yup it feels that way.  There was a scientific experiment that established political bias as a self rewarding emotional state. For the record, that goes both ways. The results lend themselves neatly to Bush Derangment Syndrome, as well as they do to wanting to shove a live porcupine up Michael moore's backside with the cameras rolling.  We are gratified when we accept (accept) information, true or not, that supports our predisposed political views. Rhat makes a reckless media more dangerous, and it reduces rational discourse on blogs to a string of insults.  We should all be on guard against it in ourselves, but the reseach never told us if there was a way to mitigate it that worked.
My sugestion would have been to take a course in critical thinking, but even the people who teach those kinds of classes interject thier biases. Tough but true

40 Well Bo, my time here is about up for today. I am trying to get on here more often again, but life has been happening a lot.  I don't think you get my point, so you may as well stay in your trench.  The same thing happened under Clinton's watch, asuming all parties are as guilty as they are made to appear, and especially if you just ignore a blatent attempt to decieve us, by Clinton himself.  looking at Clinton, as I asked you to look at libby, I can see a man who like many men before, falied to do the moral, and honerable thing regarding his marriage

It was elevated to a crime when he lied about it, which only happened because he couldn't just come forward and say  'hey, I screwed up, and I'm sorry. I'd like to fix my mariage without a lot of outside scrutiny now, so if you will let me, I'll try not to screw up my presidency in the meantime. thanks.'

He chose to cover up his weakness, and lie instead of owning up, and making amends. And yes, his ability to honor his marriage commitment reflects on his ability to honor ALL his other commitments, so it was important for us to know about. And we as a society should have been willing to let him come clean and try to do the right thing.

For Bush, I am sure there are a lot of manuverings that go on. I'm sure there is about the same cronyism as in every other administration we have ever had, but the matter is, Libby was set up by the left, and Bush really can't protect him without gfetting mauled by the harpies of the left, so he has done as little as possible to help Libby.  Thats how it works. All the politicos defend thier loyal, where they can. Libby is isolated, vulnerable, and easily victimized by the left, and the media. He still didn't do anything wrong.

 USA, all the way!

I love this new "condition" that gets thrown against anyone who has the audacity to point out one of Bush's failures.  "Oh, you must blame Bush for the corns on your feet" - Non sequitur

The evidence that Bush values loyalty over brains or competence is overwhelming.  If I had a free day to research and felt it would do some good, I'd cite all the references from Harriet Miers on down.  But I don't feel like wasting my time.

Suffice it to say that as far as an explaination for yesterday's travesty goes, given we know that Bush did not consult very widely prior to making his decision (see today's Washington Post, press conference with Tony Snowjob), it explains a lot.

43 Bo: The crime committed was lying. "I never had sex with that young woman, Ms Lewenski, never, not one time". As he shakes his finger at the entire United States. How much jail time did Clinton receive for being a lying piece of shit? One wrong doesn't make a right. Except in politics. Anyone that says Libby should have gone to jail and Clinton walk is a dunderhead.

44 They're just sore that no one was actually charged with leaking Plame's name.

If they cared a whit about the facts of the case, they'd be outraged, OUTRAGED that Dick Armitage admitted to leaking the name and identity, and was not indicted, charged, indicated as an unindicted conspirator or co-conspirator, etc.

Just let it sink in to these Democrat fanboys that they have no clue what they're talking about, and laugh at them desperately trying to matter.

I have criticized Bush, and not had that thrown at me. Maybe that is because I don't do so by simply acccepting someones talking points without checking them. Oh yes, I suppose I do onced in a while, but I always try to corect my mistakes when I make them.  BDS is the weaponization of any minor information, true or not, to attack the curent President, and his allies.  In light of the full scale assault on this President, it is nearly impossible to have a rational discussion about his actual mistakes.  In point of fact, it is undesirable to try an honest discourse about what may be wrong with Bush's policies, because it is like blood in the water for the irrational left. All thier idiot conspiracies are validated, and real exchange of ideas comes to a screeching halt.  You can catch BDS anbd not even know it. I may not think much of Bush, but there isn't a Democrat running I'd put in office instead of him. if you are given a series of bad choices, choose the lesser evil.

Have a nice Fourth, and USA, all the way!

50 Can we all at least agree that Plame is purtier than Armitage?

It's all an illusion.                USA, all the way!

51 "Anyone that says Libby should have gone to jail and Clinton walk is a dunderhead."

This is not a rational argument.  Bush does not have a "special prosecutor" check-mating him does he?  The closest he comes to Clinton is Fitzgerald - who was trying to get at the truth when Scooter (yes, poor innocent Scooter) kicked sand in his eyes.

You and yours should get some psychiatric couselling regarding Clinton.  Despite the fact that his wife is in the race, I don't see how you can compare his administration with the den of thieves that occupies power today.

52 Despite the fact that his wife is in the race, I don't see how you can
compare his administration with the den of thieves that occupies power
today.

Here are some criminals (Clinton's boyz) out and walking the streets today because of this lying, dishonest, pot-smoking, philandering, draft-dodging excuse for an ex-President:
