Stuart Lockwood : "I refused to go near him."

Many of you may recall the Fall of 1990, when Saddam Hussein, in the midst of a confrontation with the West, took a whole bunch of civilian hostages and paraded them in front of the Western media. The most famous of Saddam's "guests" was a five-year-old boy named Stuart Lockwood. The British people were incensed, but also inspired, by the image of a five-year-old British boy standing in front of a brutal dictator with crossed arms and the Brits' trademark "stiff upper lip" and refusing to go along with the dictator's "program:"

As Stuart later explained: "[Saddam] wanted me to sit on his lap so he could be filmed as a kindly father who should not be feared. I refused to go near him."

Partly because of Stuart Lockwood's stubborn intransigence, Saddam's attempt at propaganda fell completely flat on its face, having the exact opposite effect Saddam was hoping for.

Yes, a brutal dictator got PWNED by a five-year-old boy.

1 Compare that to the captive Brit sailors of late.  Sad when an entire service branch is shamed by the resolve of a little boy.

2 He would be about age for service now, no?  Shame he wasn't on that patrol boat.  Perhaps his vast experience could've taken root in the nutless sham that passes as the Royal Navy these days.

3 I dunno, I mean have you seen some of the grins on those people in some of the photos and vids.  cheese city. The brits are known for impeccable manners and politeness. They may have charmed their way along a lot more than you think.

What's that word for when a mulism misleads/lies to his enemy?

You know your ass is in a sling anyway.  Grin baby!

If they were kept apart then some of the emotion at seeing each other when they were brought together and filmed is probably real. They were glad to see each other and hungry.  Any look that stretch of water is disputed by iran.  Internationally it's not recognized. But if the iranians are holding you it's their opinion that counts if they have your ass. Really they didn't say much, probably as little as they  felt they had to at the moment.

You can say whatever to manipulate he captors as long as you don't reveal classified intelligence.  Just smile and get on.  As the brits would say.  I doubt any of them wanted to say that stuff.  Walk a mile in their shoes.

Iran won a little bit, but we did about as well as we could for the moment.  The quicker it's over the least you lose the least they gain.

5 Thanks for running this. This was the boy I was thinking about. Thought he was older than 5 though. Just makes the recent hostage situation even more shameful for us Brits who still spit in the face of the muslim.

6 The Iranians way have won a little? Only because the Brits or Americans did nothing about it. Now if we sunk one of their warships and informed them that it was payback. This they would understand. And know they lost a little.

They aren't Israel so Iran did not get bombed to hell. As for Stuart, I was two at the time so I didn't know anything about it until 2003 when the war started. They showed the video and I was wondering what a white person was doing with Saddam. didn't know the boy was a hostage until he spoke out when Saddam was hanged.

8 How about the Royal Navy replace all of their sailors with 5 year old boys and 70 year old women?  They certainly couldn't do any worse than the curent crop of sailors - which kind of puts a lie to the whole defense of the POWs as 'cunning' or 'brave.'

Here's a plan: we replace the Royal Marines with US Boy Scout, and the Royal Navy with US Cub Scouts! We could give out merit badges for "Non-Pussitude"

9     "You know your ass is in a sling anyway.  Grin baby!"

Tell that to John McCain or Ted Harris.

10 A 5 year old boy was able to stand up to a dictator, 15 marines and sailors not only surender to pirates, they happily aid and abet a dictators propaganda! Shame on them!

11 My point is a cheesy grin is often fake. Hell they looked liek the end of Beverly Hillbillies a couple times there. As as I recall John McCain said somehting to the effect of you will break. You will talk, the only choice you have is what you say. You try to be deceptive of give worthless information.
That's right John McCain admidts he broke during interrogation.

13 John McCain went through a longer ordeal than these hostages. It is hard to believe not one of the 15 stuck two fingers up to the Iranians at some stage. I would have expected more from the officers. I know and have heard of so many officers in the UK armed forces who have been beaten near to death or taken extreme punishment for their men. Name..rank serial number...no.smiles for the camera and no hand shakes. Many have died for the uniform these men and woman wear.
