9 Brilliant list. Here's a summary of the list that appeared in the Guardian. Compare and despair.

1 Invoke a terrifying internal and external enemy (terrerist n' libruls!)

2 Create a gulag

3 Develop a thug caste (that would be the Blackwater boys)

4 Set up an internal surveillance system (wiretapin')

5 Harass citizens' groups

6 Engage in arbitrary detention and release

7 Target key individuals

8 Control the press (Faux news)

9 Dissent equals treason (traitors!)

10 Suspend the rule of law (who needs habeas corpus?)

10 We seem to have far more defeatists and losers crying about the war, than they had in fascist Germany, but hey, I guess that's the exception that 'proves the rule'?   Or sumpthin.
                  USA, all the way!

13 We launched preemptive invaisons of other countries in "self defense"...just like they did in Facist Germany.

14 #11 We pee and poop just like they do in Germany.

Question. Does this now make me German? I don't want to be German. I'd rather be Scottish, Irish, Italian, or Swiss. Although the Swiss are like German Ultra Light.

15 Well, if there's one thing Bush should never be accused of it is controlling the press. Having one news outlet that is sympathetic to the conservative side and 10000000000 news outlets that are sympathetic to the liberal side is not controlling the press by any rational measure.

As for the "gulag," if you could please point out the relevant piece of international law that covers the detentions at Gitmo, I would love to see a link. It's my understanding that fighters out of uniform are not covered under the Geneva Conventions, and I've seen no other example of international law that prevents us from putting them up against a wall and shooting them.

As for the targeting of key individuals, please elaborate. Sentence fragments do not equal compelling arguments, so please make them.

Also, I'm not sure that wiretapping international calls can truly be called internal surveillance. Tapping my call from NY to Seattle would be internal surveillance.

I think I just spent way too much time responding to a troll, but I'm bored and can't sleep

16 Facist Germany? I must have missed that in the history books. I recall a facist Italy and a communist Soviet Union though.

I think the word you were looking for was NAZI. As in Nazi Germany. Facist weren't Nazis and Nazis weren't facist. But both were socialists. Just like the Soviets.

And just a little further to the left of our very own "liberal" dhimmicrats.

All Progressives you could say.

Who wants to take away our right to defend ourselves?
Who wants to control our access to health care?
Who controls most of our education system?
Who controls most of our forms of communication?

All Progressives you could say.

Apparently you did.  I suggest you go read them again.

19 The press openly hates "Der Fuhrer".
Half of the Reichstag members openly hate "Der Fuhrer".

Half of the population openly hates "Der Fuhrer".

Hmm...
That's not like it was in fascist Deutschland.

23 If the press actually did their jobs, Bush would be floating in the toilet where he belongs.

The press is generally pretty free, but seeing as Bush has meetings with conservative commentators as to how best sell his policies, and seeing as how the military embedding is a total joke, yeah... this admin does everything it can to control the media.

As I've said somewhere else... this is fascism lite.

Who is comparing the US with Germany under Hitler? This sounds like a fabricated argument to me.

25 Sorry, just saw the Guardian thing but who in America thinks we are like the Nazis?

Posted by: tbone at April 25, 2007 11:12 AM (HGqHt)

26 John,

If the press did their job honestly imbecils like you would be in prison for treason where they belong.

Nice try fagnar. It's a common error. It was still Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and you could say Fascist Spain, and Communist Soviet Union. There is a clear distinction, but they were all still socialist.

Posted by: matterson at April 25, 2007 01:05 PM (N22fr)

28 I remember vividly watching an episode of the great German talk show, Sprockets, in which Dieter, or was it Karl Heinz, says that "Fascism is like apple streudel funneled through the front flap of my father's lederhosen, it might taste sweet but if you knew where it came from would you ask for second helpings?"

Posted by: Rick at April 25, 2007 01:51 PM (9ZqGe)

29 NOTE WELL WHEN YOU ARE ACCUSED OF BEING A FASCIST!
Watch your interlocutor.  If the other person accuses you of this, they are afraid of you, and in a special way.  It is mainly Socialists who remain obsessed with Fascism.  Those two political philosophies are diametrically opposed to each other.  Ergo, your interlocutor is implicitly telling you that they are a Socialist, or at least, an extreme Leftist.

30 mattersnot sez:

It was still Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and you could say Fascist Spain, and Communist Soviet Union.

Listen, mattersnot, perhaps you have your own little personal dictionary in which you've defined the word "fascist" in such a way as to not include Germany in the 1930s and 40s.  Knock yourself out.  You're free to define the word "fascist" for yourself however you like--but that doesn't mean any of the rest of us will accept your personal definition written in your own personal dictionary.

For the rest of us, the commonly-accepted, generally-used meaning of the word "fascist" most definitely applies to Germany in the 1930s and 40s.

And the commonly-accepted, generally-used meaning of the term "clueless idiot" most definitely applies to you.

33 John ... "Bush would be floating in the toilet where"   I didn't know you had room for rent!  Invite B, and John Ryan to share with you. Then it would be easier to flush the lot of you.

34 I would say that in its current form, the US government embodies the worst characteristics of every totalitarian socialist dictatorship, only they hide it better. Death to the US government, and Liberty to the People.

Posted by: Improbulus Maixmus at April 27, 2007 07:02 AM (jQsc/)

35 Nobody in Fascist Germany drove Volkwagens. Several hundred thousand people had signed up to buy them on a subscription plan, and the factory was ready for production. But then Uncle Adolph decided to go for a walk in Poland... There was no civilian production till after the war.
