Newt on the Nork Nuke Deal

Posted at NEWT.ORG:

Alternative Strategy

  • We should instead pursue a policy of what might be called “Deterrence Plus” This strategy is similar to what President Reagan did with the Soviets at the end of the Cold War when the patient application of strategies that President Reagan defined as “peace through strength” ultimately succeeded in the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

    • Deter the aggressor militarily, including with cutting-edge strategic assets and fully capable missile defenses.

    • Preempt imminent threats (including missile tests that are not inspected by international inspectors).

    • Pursue strategies that undermine a corrupt and brittle regime.

      • Facilitate the departure of refugees, pump information in via broadcasting, cut off sources of revenue, distribute massive amounts of food through non-government channels.

  • Disrupt proliferation activities.

  • Engage diplomatically, but don’t sign agreements that prop up the regime or bargain away our advantage.

1 Sounds easy enough. Except for the parts that are not. China and others desperately want N. K. to stay as dangerous and as creepy as ever so that they can keep looking good by comparison. Searching every boat or plane that enters or leaves the place, even over China is not possible so there will never be anything that will stop them from making mischief with anyone in Central Asia or beyond while anti-Western Westerners slather and sputter at every indignity that the poor, brave, resilient (plumb psychotic) North Korean wonderland suffers under the imperial, Zionist... blah blah blah.

As for destabilizing, I like the theory but I have been struck at just how resilient regimes of fear are to destabilization. Short of total war and a messy occupation it can take centuries for freakocracies to wind down. The USSR was an exception but it had its vast size working against it and it still stood for decades and big chunks of it have avoided freedom and prosperity through diligence and determination.

Frankly the only hope I see for N. K. is that a terrorist nuke goes off somewhere with compelling evidence linking it to them so that even the left-wankers will have to shut their food holes for a couple of months while the adults of the world surgically remove the N.K. government with as little collateral damage as can be attained.

2 Saul Wall: I had the pleasure of getting educated by what was once a high ranking member of the Soviet Union. A Russian by race and birth. He is now a successful businessman in Russian.

We discussed the breakup of the Soviet Union and his take was this. Fact: By the year 2012 over 50% of the people under the Union of Soviet Socials banner would be muslim. Now Russia is mostly composed of Russians who are either Christian or nothing.  SO JUST WHO WAS THE FOOL WHEN THE SOVIET UNION BROKE UP? Sometimes going back to square one and regrouping is the way to go. In America we call it Chapter 13.
