According to this YouTuber, there's a media conspiracy going on to unfairly portray Muslims as violent:I don't know who this guy is, but he's polished and well-spoken. Well-done propaganda. He has the CAIR talking points down pat.

How informative! I love how he references specific charges and solidly refutes them with reason, logic and facts. He totally crushed "that one guy he saw on TV" and "people who don't understand islam." People like the ayatollah khomeni, who said "A man can have sexual pleasure from a child as young as a baby. However, he should not penetrate." or mohammad, who said "When the sacred months are over slay the idolaters wherever you find them. Arrest them, besiege them, and lie in ambush everywhere for them."

Note also that the word "jihad" means "struggle," and has has 3 different connotations, only one of which refers to violence (the other two mean personal struggle and political movement).

It is no more a threat to Democracy than any other religion. There are variants of Islam that work just fine with Democracy. Of course there are also variants that are totally anti-democratic, but that is also true of any other religion. For an interesting read on the subject of fundamentalism, read The Battle for God by Karen Armstrong.
Perhaps the more violent strain of Islam have more popular appeal right now for the simple fact that many Muslims live without having a stake in their society; this is in some cases due to US interventionism, the best example being our support for Saudi Arabia.

A variant of islam isn't islam. islam doesn't tolerate variants, indeed the very idea of deviating from the specific words uttered by an infallible and infinitely perfect deity is nonsensical. That's why there's so much violence between muslim sects - none of them consider the other groups "true" muslims.
The problem with equating islam to "any other religion" is that islam isn't just a religion. It's a political system and a way of controlling the tiniest detail of people's lives wrapped up in the trappings of a religion. It's the antithesis of democracy.
