Murder in Beirut, Manure in Damascus

Sadly, a leading anti-Syrian voice in the Lebanese government, Pierre Gemayel, was assassinated yesterday. Gemayel is the fifth prominent anti-Syrian Lebanese figure killed in the last two years.

Meanwhile, probably simultaneous with the Gemayel murder, Syria's grand mufti was pumping smoke up the skivvies of yet another Westerner in the country.

From SANA.org:

Syria's grand Mufti Sheikh Ahmad Badre al-Din Hassoun on Tuesday underlined the importance of work to spread culture of peace, tolerance and human fraternity in the world to overcome seeds of conflict and extremism among nations.

"The reason behind instability in the region is that Israel is based on a religious basis… and this is a dangerous concept in life which paves way for more conflicts among nations… thus efforts should be intensified to bring up nations on national basis," the Mufti said during a meeting with the Canadian Ambassador in Damascus Mark Belli.

For his part, the Canadian Ambassador expressed admiration over tolerance and coexistence in Syria, stressing the important role of clergymen and scholars to spread culture of fraternity and peace among peoples.

Predictably, Israel is to blame for the seeds of conflict and extremism among nations.

Regarding the other Westerners, notable recent visitors to Syria included American Protestant Pastor Rick Warren and Reverend Joan Brown Campbell, who both presumably became moist while listening to the grand mufti's eloquent statements about the religion of peace and tolerance.

He [Warren] met with Assad and the Grand Mufti of Syria, Sheikh Ahmad Hassoun, saying, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency, that "80% of the American people rejected what the US administration is doing in Iraq and considered the US policy in the Mideast as wrong." SANA added, "Pastor Warren expressed admiration of Syria and the co-existence he saw between Muslims and Christians, stressing that he will convey this image to his church and country."
Holy moly -- shades of Jimmy Carter. Pastor Warren, author of the bestselling The Purpose Driven Life, goes to a foreign country and trashes the U.S. Naturally, conservatives were outraged. However, when the media questioned Warren about his statements, he denied that he had said them. Okay, so who's telling a fib here? It's hard to tell without a recording.

And then there's the involvement of Reverend Joan Brown Campbell, head of a delegation of senior American clergy, who also recently visited Syria. The Americans met with the Grand Mufti of the Republic Dr. Ahmad Badruddin Hassoun who explained that Islam is the religion of tolerance and "asserted that man was the most sacred creature on Earth." In response:

Members of the delegation expressed pleasure over the climate of tolerance they had seen in Syria, stressing that realities in the country were different from what the negative image given about Syria in the past.
It's assumed that the "sacred creatures" strapped with explosives were hidden from view. And there's more.
Members of the American delegation expressed admiration for what they had seen in Syria and for the example of coexistence and fraternity among Moslems and Christians, adding they were going to convey what they had seen in Syria to the American people.
So, an anti-Syrian government official is murdered in Lebanon with Syria believed culpable and, all the while, prominent Westerners visit the grand mufti for servings of manure which, not only leaves them satisfied, but also has them joyously voicing praise and admiration for Syria and the religion of peace and tolerance.

Just lovely.

1 And this assassination was effectively predicted on the 17th.
See - Anti-Syrian minister predicts assassination of ministers. . .

From the article - [emphasis added]
Anti-Syrian Christian leader Samir Geagea said yesterday efforts to topple Lebanon’s Western-backed government of Prime Minister Fouad Siniora could lead to assassination attempts against cabinet ministers.

Geagea, a former militia chief whose Lebanese Forces party has one minister in the cabinet, said Syria was determined to stop the formation of a UN-backed tribunal to try suspects in the killing of former prime minister Rafik al-Hariri.

He did not say who might try to kill ministers.

Lebanon plunged deeper into crisis this month when six ministers, including all five Shia Muslims, quit the cabinet after the collapse of all-party talks over giving the pro-Syrian Hezbollah and its allies a decisive say in government.

All the remaining ministers are members of, or close to, the anti-Syrian majority coalition.

If the government lost three more ministers, it would automatically fall.

"There are no three ministers who will resign of course, but someone might think of ‘sacking them’, in quotes, by pushing them to a final resignation. Thus the government falls. Therefore we have big fears over the ministers," he said.

"I think there might be operations targeting ministers and I take this opportunity to say it publicly and especially to tell the ministers to take all precautions," Geagea said in a telephone interview from his north Lebanon home.

And in other news from the land of peace and tolerance -
to paraphrase, We're gonna keep on sending terrorists to Iraq if you don't make Israel give back the Golan Heights . . .

And if you don't give the Heights back, we're gonna threaten Israel.

2 These visitors may wish to meet with the millenia-old Jewish communities of Damascus and other Syrian cities to discuss the Syrian government's tolerance.

Of course they'll have to go to Jerusalem or Deal, New Jersey, to do so...

4 About 10% of the population of Syria is Christian. The Ba'atrh partyof Syria, as was the Ba'ath party of Iraq, always afraid of muslim fundametalism. They smashed the Muslim Brotherhood preety hard when they tried to take control. But the Ba'ath party adoes not have a great deal of support, if it were to fail  probably muslim fundamentalists would take over.

5 John Ryan:
Talk about mixed message, one minute you're decrying the threat of Islamic terrorism, and in the next you're saying it's good thing that tin-pot dictatorships exist so that Islamic terrorists don't take over? which is it?

6 Pastor Rick Warren didn't trash the US!!! This from an e-mail I received from him:

In hindsight, I wish we’'d been better prepared for our visit to Syria.
We would have handled some meetings differently, watched our words more
closely, and been more aware of the agenda of their state press. We
wanted to just slip in and out, but that’s nearly impossible for me to
do anymore. It’s been a learning experience. Be sure to read the press
release at the end of this note that gives you all the details.

Why did we go to Syria? The simple truth is that I was
invited by my neighbor, Yassar. When we arrived, our first event was a
home cooked meal with 20 of Yassar’s family. Then, we were shown many
of the historical Christian sites in Syria: the road to Damascus where
Paul was converted, Straight street where the Holy Spirit led Paul, the
house where Ananias prayed for his healing, the wall where Paul was let
down in a basket to escape the Romans, the tomb of John the Baptist and
the oldest Christian church building in existence.

Next, my neighbor arranged for us to meet some key
Christian leaders, Muslim leaders, and government leaders - including
the president of Syria. Franklin Graham has had years of experience
with Lebanon and Syria, so I asked him what to say to the Syrian
President. Franklin told me, “Thank him for protecting the freedom of
Christians and Jews to worship there.”

As we left, the official state-controlled Syrian news
agency issued some press releases that sounded like I was a politician
negotiating the Iraq war by praising the Syrian President and
everything else in Syria! Of course, that’s ridiculous, but it created
a stir among bloggers who tend to editorialize before verifying the
truth. Does it seem ironic to you that people who distrust Syria are
now believing Syrian press releases?

In our meeting with the president, I explained (as
usual) the Saddleback P.E.A.C.E. Plan, and he gave us permission to
send teams to Syria.

I am aware that inaccuracies, misquotes, and misperceived motivations
get reported about me in the press daily. Most of the time, I just
ignore them. Jesus said, "If the world hates you, remember that it
hated me first.” (John 15:18 - NCV)

I love the paraphrase of Matthew 5:11-12 (Msg): “Count
yourselves blessed every time people put you down or speak lies about
you to discredit me. What it means is that the truth is too close for
comfort and they are uncomfortable. You can be glad when that
happens—for though they don't like it, I do! And all heaven applauds.
And know that you are in good company. My prophets and witnesses have
always gotten into this kind of trouble.”

Just don’t believe everything you read on the Internet or hear in the media.

7 Willing propagandist, or useful idiot, Rick Warren, by going
hat-in-hand to kiss their asses, has only helped the enemy.
