And by the good guys, I mean the Empire of course.

2 Oh so true. The empire was running quite well, till that uppity little princess and the fascist jedi order decided to tell everyone how to run things. David Brin had it right:

4 Tarkin in that reminds me of my friend and I: "I say we're in range now...Fire"

Patrick, wow, that guy had WAAAAY too much time on his hands. I like both Star Wars and Star Trek. This guy sounds like one of those rabid Trek fans who wears Spock ears 24/7 and tries to kill you the instant he finds out you watched even 5 seconds of Wars.

I especially loved this: "Anyway, when it comes to portraying human destiny, where would you rather live, assuming you'll be a normal citizen and no demigod? In Roddenberry's Federation? Or Lucas' Empire?"

Has he never seen Star Trek?! Personally I'd choose neither. Everyone who's not one of the central 5-20 main crewmembers out of crews of 200+ die in 5 minutes in Trek; the fact that it's a magnetic cloud space anomaly or a giant lizardman killing everyone and not a maniac who's 1/2 powered armor killing people with his mind ultimately makes little difference. Dead is dead.

I followed the links and Brin had some good points, but his humanistic roots were showing through. There are some deep fallacies and I think his interpretation of literary history is a bit two-dimensional.

7 Ever since I first saw this movie when it *first* hit the theaters way back when, and I was only 7 years old, I could never understand why the Empire didn't just blast Yavin, letting its destruction do whatever damage it could to the moon then blast the moon. It's such a big plot hole you can drive a Death Star through it.

8 (Full geek mode)

Well, if I had to guess, I'd say the Death Star might not have the power to destroy a gas giant hundreds of times the size of the moon orbiting it.

Of course, I could be wrong.

9 The death star (1st one) could only fire 1 shot per day. Even if it blew up Yavin, there'd be ample time for the rebel fleet to disperse or still attack the death star.
