AllahP notes that the AP will now refrain from naming sources for much of its "stringer" coverage in the future. I'm sure that will help sort out the real from the propaganda. Chalk this one up as a win for the bloggers, as the AP hasn't produced the source, and won't because it has been demonstrated that the 'source' doesn't really exist - at the very least not in the capacity or with the 'credibility' with which the AP presented the source.

Unless the AP wants to produce him, which they won't.

Dan Reihl offers more evidence that the alleged "burning Sunni" incident never happened.

Green Helmet Guy lives on, however, in the AP annals of fame and honor. I and many others scoff derisively and with satisfaction that the AP has not only lost its rudder, but has run aground and is leaking a massive oil slick into the sound. Stay tuned.

1 Obviously, the issue is accountability. You have more accountability when a name follows a quote -- as opposed to an unnamed source following a quote.

Is the use of anonymous quotes now really AP's POLICY in Iraq?

If so that's quite interesting because my understanding is that the AP strongly discourages the us of anonymous sources. However, it apparently makes an exception in its Iraq converge -- especially when the anonymous source being quoted (by an Iraqi freelancer/stringer) confirms the narrative preferred by the American AP staffer who ultimately writes up the story (sitting safely behind his computer in the AP's offices in the Palestine Hotel in the Green Zone).

2 Those poor souls on the tanker don't deserve to be compared to the AP scum. At least the sailors are Professionals. It's not like they are going to deny that there's a problem.

6 Oil tankers everywhere resent being compared to the AP. Even the Argo Merchant had more integrity as it broke apart off Massachussets than the AP does.
