The device was apparently set to detonate in London's theater and nightclub district in the west end of the city. The area is customarily packed with thousands of people throughout most of the day. Nearby is Piccadilly Circus.
A massive manhunt for the driver of the Haymarket vehicle was under way, with police trawling through CCTV footage from last night. Congestion charge cameras situated throughout central London are also capable of tracking where the car came from, and which routes it took. The Mercedes has been impounded and authorities believe it to be a forensics gold mine. London Metro Police have scheduled a press briefing later this morning.Terror groups like al-Qaeda are believed to have been planning attacks on nightclubs, which are considered by Islamic fundamentalists to be symbols of Western decadence.
From Metropolitan Police Briefing (0715 EDT):
Peter Clarke, Deputy Assistant Commissioner for Scotland Yard:
1) Incident began with notification from an ambulance crew of a parked car (pic) suspiciously emitting smoke. Ambulance crew had responded to a different emergency.Metro Police continue to investigate. Notably, a large quantity of CCTV footage is being reviewed.2) Police investigated and found cans of gasoline, propane gas canisters, and a large number of nuts and bolts. Police called explosives officers.
3) Explosives officers manually disarmed the device. Area cordoned off. Vehicle impounded.
4) Target not known. Peter Clarke stated that they had no counterterrorism intelligence prior to the incident.
5) Metro Police is appealing to the public for information.
In a followup report, a security source said the operating mechanism in the explosive device is similar to IED's found in Iraq.

Where have you been? Bush said it many times as did most of the GOP lemmings, err so called leaders.
For a proper explaination of the term, read this:

I try not to compartmentalize things into politically "right" or "left." These lables are often thrown around without any proper rationale. I think what we are all after is the truth - without spin or hidden agendas.
Sadly, right now hate, fear and hidden interests cloud all rational debate on the right. The left has it's share of hysteria, but at least they have American best interests in mind when they talk about foreign policy. All you get on this side of the isle is a knee-jerk goon-like response to what is essentially a problem of containing or defusing Islamic fundamentalism. In a saner world, people who advocate dropping bombs to solve Middle East problems would have been laughed at - here they are applauded and cheered.

The "attack" on the organism (the US) and the reaction - the invasion of a country that had nothing to do with the attack - is precisely the reason we have a giant mess right now.

What is the point of making such a stupid statement?
The reasons behind 9/11 are many, but I think Pat Buchanan said it best when he simply said "they are here because we are there." And Buchanan ain't no Liberal.

Just like communism, Islamic fundamentalism finds fertile soil wherever there is extreme poverty and desperation (no hope of a better life). We do not have the power to change all this (eradicate poverty around the world) so the only choice is to continue to do as we have done since WWII - be a model republic, export our culture of freedom and liberty through indirect channels. It used to be referred to as American soft power. It was hugely effective during the Cold War - it can be equally effective against Isamic fundamentalism.
If you think about it: they have labled us "the Great Satan" - and our actions with respect to invading and occupying Iraq feed this propaganda.

Keep cracking out the old disproven talking points: Please point me to suicide bombings and murders done by Tibetan monks who are both poor and had their land occupied by China.
Yawn.

And there used to be such a thing as a moderate muslim. Quite a few less of them types these days (thank Bush for that).
