"John Doe" Flying Imams Prompts Democrats to Change Rules

The House Democratic leadership is in the process of crafting new procedural rules that would make it much harder for rank-and-file members to offer changes to bills. The procedure was used only two days ago to "recommit" a bill to committee to protect "John Does" from civil lawsuits which might arise from reporting suspicious activity--such as the flying imams case.

As I've said on these pages many times: it's not so much that I like the Republicans as I fear the Democrats.

Audrey Hudson, official flying imam reporter and JY blog mascot-babe, in the Washington Times:

House Democrats want to change rules that allow Republicans to modify bills on the floor -- a tactic the GOP has used several times, including a maneuver this week to insert a shield law for "John Doe" passengers to report potential terrorists without fear of legal reprisal.

House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer, Maryland Democrat, threatened to change the rules during a press briefing Tuesday, just hours before Republicans used the procedural motion to recommit the Rail and Public Transportation Security Act of 2007 back to committee to include the protective language.

The effort passed on a vote of 304-121, with 105 Democrats siding with all 199 Republicans.
Scary. Most interesting fact from the article? 17 of 19 of the motions introduced by Republicans passed with the support of rank-and-file Democrats. I think that says something about just how left-of-center the Democratic leadership really is.

I couldn't say it better.

I don't get it.  How does that prove how left of center they are, and how is that scary?   I'm either a bit slow this morning, or your writing is too ambiguous.

3 It doesn't "prove" anything, but it is "evidence".  The fact that the leadership wants to change the rules on the heels of some popular Republican motions--popular even inasmuch as a majority of Dems voted for them--seems to indicate they are out of touch (at least, on these issues).  That these motions seem to be mostly about Homeland Security, and the leadership opposes them, seems to show that they are left-of-center of the rank-and-file.
