Jeffrey Ake Missing Two Years

howieJeffreyakehostagesmall.jpgIt was one year ago today that Liliana Ake went public with her story on CNN. at that time no one had heard any word from Jeff’s kidnappers in 11 months. Sadly, there is still no word of what happened to him.

We have been following the story from the beginning. I learned many things about him and his family. Jeff owned a company called Equipment Express specialized in bringing safe drinking water to parts of the world where it was needed. His first effort to bring safe bottle water to Iraq in November 2003 was a success. One of his friends has taken Jeff’s methods home to Nigeria.

On Jeff’s second trip to Iraq in April 2005, he was taken hostage. His kidnappers released a couple videos of Jeff. They even called Liliana’s home, but the calls stopped and Jeff’s fate is unknown as of this time.

Being from a small mid-western town, the images of La Porte reminded me so much of my home that I felt a kinship with Mr. Ake and the people of La Porte. It was just like so many of the small friendly towns that dot the mid-west.

We have been hoping that Jeff’s case would turn out similar to Roy Hallums and a reunion would be swift in coming. But the last year has not yielded his release or any new information.

Jeff’s company was liquidated this year and a fund was started to help Liliana and her four children to keep the Ake family’s home. The fund raising so far has been successful despite small number of outlets (about nine) that ran the story. Donations are still being accepted. More information on how and where to make donations can be found below the fold in this post.

We pray for Jeff’s safe and unconditional release As Rusty said in one of his posts, “No political cause can ever justify the taking of civilians hostage. It is a form of barbarity with no excuse.”

Here is a list of hostages still missing and held by terrorists via Vicki at Not Ready for my Burqua. There are many more missing, especially in Iraq, who's storys are unknown.

2 Shouldn't Matt Maupin be on this list?  I didn't realize the animals had kidnapped so many.  Breaks my heart thinking about the anguish their families must feel.  Of course, thinking about them being held captive by the most savage and brutal religious zealots on earth doesn't produce a warm and fuzzy feeling here.

3 Thanks Cheryl for the reminder. I've added him to the list at my site, there is also a Wednesday's Hero profile of him there.

4 Finally we get a chance to create and then replace that tattered MIA-POW vietnam flag with one from this Islamic cultural war.  It will be good to have something to look at while we ponder all that guilt deep within our souls for being so evil!  Risk/reward ratio is always in play within war climates.  No one, from all sides, wants to lose someone that is loved.  And now they're playing the movie "Cast Away" on cable...it never ends.

5 Keith Matthew Maupin is dead. His captors released a video of him being shot in the back of the head and chest to Al-Jazeera on June 28, 2004 because according to them, "The U.S failed to change it's policy in Iraq". That's their words, not mine. His parents and the U.S still refuse to believe that he was the man killed in the video. That's ridiculous, the captors ceased contact after that so they were not bullshitting.

And Jeffrey Ake is also clearly dead. He appeared in one video and his kidnappers called his wife many times for ransom. They wanted the money quickly (they were afraid she was stalling I guess) and when she couldn't go to Iraq, the kidnappers ceased contact. That was on May 1, 2005. The kidnappers clearly killed him because it's been two years without contact. Hostages are held for years and freed but the kidnappers keep in contact with the government and family of the hostages.

The kidnappers decided to kill Jeffrey and make the family suffer by not revealing that. The same thing happened to Aban Elias and Dean Sadek.

I do however believe that Gilad Shalit, Ahmed Qusai, the two Germans, and the five contractors are alive.

Three insurgents held their guns at him, not two. I don't think those guys were Al Qaeda. One hopes the three are dead.
