Jawa Results: German al Qaeda Website Down

Yahoo! Geocities has responded to your complaints and has removed a German language al Qaeda website. The "al Jawab" are the German branch of the Global Islamic Media Front (GIMF), an al Qaeda propaganda outlet.

Thank you to Jawa Report readers for sending in complaints, to those that linked the post and helped expose this, and to Yahoo! Geocities for doing the right thing when notified. Here's a screenshot of the offending website.

1 It will always be a game of cat/mouse.  I'd be willing to be that site is back up someplace else within a week.  I don't know which is worse, having the site up and watching the content (and possibly have friendly intelligence penetrate it) or shutting it down and then having to go find it again.  Moving a website consists of an FTP transfer and changing a redirect at some jihadi central dispatch site.  The user doesn't even need to know the location of the content, they could just click on a link from the "dispatch" server which has no content other than links to the other sites.  One of the sites gets knocked off, you upload the content to another and change the link to point to it.  Would probably take 5 minutes.

I am somewhat in favor of keeping the site up so maybe the operators/content providers for the site could be located.  A FISA warrant and a network traffic dump would be all it would take to get started on the trail of the operators/users.

3 crosspatch, rest assured that if certain agencies wanted this or any other terror site to stay up and running for intel purposes we couldn't take it down via the host complaint routine.  While it is a game of cat and mouse (whack the mole) and is largely symbolic it does show that we care.
