In other words, the police did their job. Without non-lethal weapons, lethal is the only option that they have (especially when the "civilians" are themselves armed with automatic weapons). And the lethal option had the intended effect. The uncivilized malcontents got their asses handed to them and I don't don't think they'll be trying that again. Otherwise, we may have seen quite a few more people killed in the resulting mod violence, which they would then feel they had license to repeat.
It isn't pretty to look at, but this was, overall, a success.
