German Gets House Arrest for Nuclear Smuggling

Outrageous? Yes, but not quite as egregious as the mastermind of the nuclear proliferation ring, Abdul Qadeer Khan, who was pardoned after he confessed to helping Libya & North Korea develop nuclear weapons. While no official charges have been pressed against Khan, he's been put under an unofficial sort of house arrest. Not so much as punishment, but to make sure he doesn't talk to the press and confirm what we all know: that he was working under the blessings of the Pakistani government in helping rogue nations develop nuclear weapons.

A South African court handed a German engineer who was involved in a global nuclear technology smuggling ring an 18-year suspended jail sentence on Tuesday, the SAPA news agency reported.

Gerhard Wisser will have to spend three years under house arrest as part of a plea bargain...

Wisser, former managing director of Johannesburg engineering company Krisch Engineering, had been accused of involvement in an international smuggling ring headed by disgraced Pakistani scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan...

Germans Arrest Three Terror Suspects In Plot Against U.S. Military Base UPDATED/BUMPED

BERLIN - Three men have been arrested for planning attacks on the U.S. military base in Ramstein and Frankfurt's international airport, a German broadcaster reported Wednesday.

Two of the suspects had German citizenship while the third was Pakistani, the Sudwestrundfunk public broadcaster said. It said the men were arrested Tuesday evening and were close to carrying out the attacks.

Nothing to worry about I'm sure. They're just "youths."

UPDATE by Rusty, bane of al Qaeda in Germany, at 08:00: Attack is said to be "imminent" and "massive". Two of the arrested "youths" were German born converts to Islam, 22 & 29. The other is a 29 year old Turkish immigrant--which contradicts the earlier report which said he was Pakistani.

In addition to targeting Ramstein and Frankfurt airport, the group also planned to attack night clubs and bars frequented by Americans. Very reminiscent of the 1980s.

An NPR report said this morning that the three belong to the Uzbeki branch of the global jihad, The Islamic Jihad Group, and to have trained in Pakistan with al Qaeda. The report also claimed that the attack came on direct orders from the al Qaeda leadership.

As Confederate Yankee notes, the hydrogen peroxide base of the bomb most certainly would have been used to construct a TATP bomb. The same kind of bomb used in the London transit bombings. UPDATE: Not so fast, CY thinks that TATP would not have been powerful enough to do the kind of damage the reports are talking about.

UPDATE 08:20: AllahP has a nice history of Islamist plots in Germany and connects many dots. Here are the main points, with a few he missed:

1) Arrests came yesterday, same day as arrests in Denmark. Those plotters also said to be building TATP bomb.

2) On July 31, 2006 suitcase bombs failed to detonate on German trains. Possibly linked to Hizbollah.

3) May 2007, fear of imminent attack. Possibly linked to Ansar al Sunna, an Iraqi terror group with roots in the Kurdish community and which raises money from European Kurds.

4) May 14, Air Marshals alerted to possible threats from Germany.

5) Most important, Newsweek reported that Uzbeki Islamic Jihad Group connection back in July. Meaning that not only has this group been under surveillance for some time, but the press had wind of it before the suspects.

You'd think that they'd kind of suspect they were being watched after the media runs a story about a possible German terror cell with links to a little known jihad group in Uzbekistan. The Newsweek article actually goes so far as to say that "its German network has recently attracted recruits of other nationalities." How many jihadis in Germany could actually fit that profile?

Of course, that assumes that the Newsweek report was picked up in the German media and that the plotters read it. But my guess is that these guys were far more likely to be consuming propaganda put out by the Global Islamic Media Front (GIMF), which is run out of Germany, than reading Der Spiegel.

What exactly is the Uzbekistan connection? In 2004 the U.S. and Israeli embassies were bombed in Uzbekistan by "Islamists" of what I presume is the same group. I've also seen pre-9/11 video of Uzbeki Islamists training for jihad within Afghanistan. What many seem not to get in the MSM that there is a loose network of global jihadis, all of which support each other.

This article, linked by Michelle Malkin, says that the three were trained in Pakistan by the Islamic Jihad Union. This NY Times article has the German prosecutor claiming the three had connections to "high ranking al Qaeda members" and the earlier NPR radio story claimed the plot was ordered by al Qaeda leadership.

So, trained by Uzbeki jihadis but on orders from al Qaeda? What this suggests is that the Democratic predisposition to claim that there is a "real" al Qaeda and to seperate this "real" al Qaeda from other Islamist threats is simply not based in reality. We are not at war with al Qaeda, we are at war with a global Islamist movement. That movement has scores of different armed groups, all of which have the same goals as al Qaeda and which have loose connections to it, but few of which actually are the "real" al Qaeda.

UPDATE 08:50: Shots fired during arrest. Also, the three are identified:

Daniel S. from the state of Saarland and Fritz G. from Neu-Ulm in Bavaria, both of whom are German converts to Islam, as well as Adem Y., who is believed to be from Turkey

The report also claims that there were other raids around Germany, meaning that these three may be the tip of the iceberg.

Yemen's Democracy: Death Penalty for a Slogan

Demonstrations that began in May are continuing in Yemen as the regime takes increasingly repressive and violent measure to quell dissent.

Security forces made mass arrests of demonstrators, prompting more demonstrations. A new law criminalizes slogans. A newspaper is facing terrorism charges for reporting war news in the Sa'ada War. A top member of the Yemeni Socialist Party has been "seized" by security forces.

(AP) Riot police fired bullets and used tear gas and water cannons Tuesday to disperse thousands of protesters demanding the release of more than 200 veterans and their sympathizers detained for protesting earlier this month, a police official said.

The protesters are mostly southern Yemeni veterans who lost their jobs after a defeat by northern forces in a civil war 13 years ago.

Yemen's top security body warned that "any party, movement, group or individual who stages or carries slogans that put national unity in peril, or calls for destruction of national unity, will be tried as a traitor."

Traitors face the death penalty under Yemen's constitution.

Danes Thwart Bomb Plot UPDATED/BUMPED

(Copenhagen, Denmark) With sketchy details, it's reported that Danish Police intelligence service (PET) arrested several people early today for planning a bomb attack somewhere in Copenhagen.

"The arrests are the result of prolonged surveillance of the persons concerned who are suspected of preparing a terrorist act with the use of explosives," PET said in a statement received by AFP.

The arrests were carried out around the Danish capital.

PET did not say how many people were under arrest or give their nationalities.

I'll make a wild stab and guess that those arrested were Muslim.

The eight suspects arrested late on Monday in Copenhagen form part of a terror cell with links to a senior al-Qaeda figure, police said.

The suspects, aged between 19 and 29, were of Afghan, Pakistani, Somali and Turkish origin, police said.

UPDATE by Rusty: Hmmmm, related? A couple of years ago a group calling themselves 'The Glory Brigades of Northern Europe' threatened to attack Denmark.

That threat came on the heels of the original Mohammed cartoons. Could today's bust be related to the most recent set of Muhamed cartoons published in Sweden? Authorities are denying that today's arrests had anything to do with the cartoons, but if you read what they're saying, it's not that the plot had nothing to do with the cartoons, only that the arrests weren't catalyzed by them.

I'll also remind readers that members of their is a deep rooted connection between jihadis in Sweden and those in Denmark.

Fred Polling First in Arizona, Bests Front Runners in Texas Straw Poll

Fred's getting good news from Arizona:

Arizona is the home state for John McCain, but Fred Thompson is the strongest GOP Presidential candidate in the state at this time.

A Rasmussen Reports telephone survey found that Thompson leads Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton by seventeen percentage points, 51% to 34%. Thompson will be formally announcing his candidacy this week.

In other news, Fred managed a "surprising" and "unexpected" showing at the Texas Straw Poll this weekend:

FORT WORTH – Rep. Duncan Hunter of California will go down as the official winner of the first-ever Texas Republican straw poll.

But what followers of politics will be talking about is former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson's second-place finish.

China Hacks Pentagon Computers

Last week it was Chinese espionage involving German computers and now it's being reported that China has hacked into the Pentagon's computers.

The Financial Times quoted US officials as saying the Chinese army made the attack, which crashed part of a system for the defence secretary's office.

Chinese Foreign Ministry official Jiang Yu said Beijing "opposed and vigorously attacked" all attacks on the internet including hacking.

"Some people are making wild accusations against China ... These are totally groundless and also reflect a Cold War mentality," she said.

The Financial Times earlier quoted a senior official as saying the Pentagon had pinpointed the origins of the attack and another as saying there was a "high level of confidence" that the People's Liberation Army was responsible.

Naturally, China will assert that the People's Liberation Army wouldn't do anything sneaky. I'll assert they're fibbing.

American Muslim Threatens Rusty UPDATED/BUMPED

On Friday I challenged members of the Global Islamic Media Front to "come and get us". GIMF is an al Qaeda support group located in Germany. Like most of the cyberjihadis they are a bunch of sissies who speak of themselves as if they were engaged in actual jihad rather than the cyber version of it. Bush Surprise Visit to Iraq

(Al-Asad Air Base, Anbar Province, Iraq) President Bush secretly flew 11 hours from Washington to make a surprise visit to Iraq, presumably landing only a short while ago. Defense Secretary Gates also arrived for a visit by a separate airplane.

Apparently, nobody in the media was tipped off to the trip. Pundits peg the trip as a show of support for the Iraqi government and a morale booster for the troops.

Two Protesters Dead in Makalla, Yemen

Sources: “In a nutshell, on the 1st September 2007 multiple legal demonstrations took place in many cities, however, the Yemeni government, local authorities and security forces used live and plastic bullets, water canons and tear gas against peaceful demonstrators particularly in Aden and Mukalla . In Mukalla alone two people died suffering from wounds, more than 15 wounded and over 150 still detained in different security prisons in Mukalla with information that two of those detainees are under age until the time of writing this update.” Photos here.

This article indicates that "northern owned" public property (a contradiction of terms that makes perfect sense in Yemen) and cars were attacked.

SANA'A, NewsYemen: While authorities confirm they would prevent any protest "out of demonstrations law", leaders in the opposition Islah party said that allowing protests in Sana'a, Taiz and Ibb and preventing them in Aden and Hadramout is an example of "double standards".

"Security forces prevented for the fourth time a peaceful march in Aden asking for rights guaranteed by the constitution and law and this is a double standard way of dealing with Yemeni people" head of the executive office of Islah in Aden Ensaf Mayo said in a statement to NewsYemen.

Makalla is a coastal city in Hadramout.

Update: Sources: "Political Security Forces in Aden today September the 2nd 2007, at 05:30 pm, stormed into the house of Naser Alnnoba (senior organiser), Chairman of the Southerners associations for the forcibly retired military and civilian officers and employees (MCRA), broke the outer house door, rushed in, arrested him, in front of his kids and family, led him to unknown place."

Al-Noba has been leading the protests that began in May.

More on the Haditha "Massacre," and the MSM's Flawed Narrative...

Borrowing heavily from Karl at PW, who's done the heavy lifting, we rewind to when the Haditha story broke.

It was covered as a massacre, and the US troops were automatically guilty - a new "My Lai," as it were. Multiple articles in TIME (here, here and here) gleefully and breathlessly reporting the incident with no indication as to the Marine's rights to fair trial and to challenge the charges against them (which later resulted in the exonerations of several of those same Marines), as did the WaPo, NYT, the networks in general, and particularly the Tiffany network at CBS, ABC, and PBS.

No similar full-court press, however, for their exonerations and their full clearings.

Where is the full court press announcing the exoneration and innocence of the majority of the soldiers in this incident?

Where is the aggressive questioning of such charlatans as John Murtha (D) as to their premature convictions without trials of these Marines in the court of political opinion?

There certainly was a full-court media press trying to convict them, and now that the case appears to be falling apart quicker than Hillary Clinton's chances of winning the presidency, where is the full-court media press for their exonerations?

Shouldn't it be leading the newscasts on ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, and in the NYT, TIME magazine, the WaPo, and others?
