Iran Votes Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Candidates Lose

Heh, Apparently Iran's Voters are none to happy with his abandonment of his platform t Mahmoud's abandonment of his platform and puppet dance fotr the Ayatollahs.

The Guardian:The Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, faced electoral embarrassment today after the apparent failure of his supporters to win control of key local councils and block the political comeback of his most powerful opponent.

Early results from last Friday's election suggested that his Sweet Scent of Service coalition had won just three out of 15 seats on the symbolically important Tehran city council, foiling Mr Ahmadinejad's plan to oust the mayor and replace him with an ally.

Heh, welcome to Democracy. The people have spoken and you did even worse than the Republicans in the US.

I'd step down now, before the Iranian people hang you from a crane.

Also see OTB and Captain's Quarters. Yes I'm basking in the glow of this one.

2 deary me... does the US State Dept acknowledge degrees in Classics, Persian History etc? If so, then perhaps someone there might appreciate why I'm saying "deary me" so much these days. Mahmoud got the result he doubtless anticipated and wanted; life outside the Green Zone/Disney Land is complicated, and occasionally rooted in history, and God knows, sometimes even subtle. So before you all gloat, self congratulate, condemn, vilify, and generally behave in that manner which one side always accuses the other of; read, learn, think. Fond regards, William Farrow [shameless apologist for intelligent nonpolemicism].

3 Watch for people to start "disappearing".  We'll see how he handles the pressure.

5 Excellent!!!  They may not like the U.S., but at least they're smart enough to kick Mahmoud to the curb for being a raving lunatic.

6 Well in the battle between Sunnis and Shiites, I would have preferred if we ended up on the side of the Shiites (lesser of two evils). But the Ayatollah Assahollah cut off that option in 1979.

I really have lost hope in Iran being reformed from within.  There was a decent shot in 1999, but the mullahs crushed it. Barring some radical event (think US air strikes), there is no momentum among the Iranian population for an internal shakeup (in any direction - good or bad).  Plus, the mullahs are smart enough to make sure neither Afghhanistan or Iraq ever become a shining beacon of democracy and freedom - no need to tempt the persian masses into thinking they can have the same thing at home.

Oh well, at least we can still import pistachios from Iran. Thanks Clinton!

9 William:

Yes, Amadjihad and his "supreme guide" ayatollah are complex and subtle deep-thinkers. If only we ignorant Westerners were able to fathom their intricate motives and plots. Their policies of "Death to America," "death to Israel," and "submit to islam" are much too sophisticated for our feeble, parochial minds to grasp.

Yeah, right. Baboon troop leaders have more complicated intentions and methods of social control than the organ grinding mullahs and their peforming president.

Deary me, so much for your intelligent non-polemicism.
