Ayman al Zawahiri was the target of an attack on a madrassa--an Islamic religious school--on Sunday near the town of Chingai. The attack is now said to have been carried out by an armed U.S. Predator drone. The attack killed at least 80 people.There is no clear indication whether of not al Qaeda's leading spokesperson was killed. We all pray, though, that Zawahiri has met his maker.
Earlier reports coming from Pakistan indicated that the target was Faqir Mohammed--a local al Qaeda leader. The area was the scene of a massive pro-Taliban rally the day before. The Pakistanis also took credit for the bombings, but now The Blotter is reporting that it was the U.S. that carried out the attack.

If Zawahiri is dead (knock on wood) Allahpundit thinks this would be a great campaign issue. Either way, the Left will begin questioning the timing.
Bill Roggio has some important notes as to why Pakistan taking credit for the attack, when it seems the U.S. was responsible, matters. It does.

The last time rumors began circulating that Zawahiri was dead, al Jazeere claimed Zawahir was the "victim" of a U.S. attack. That's right, Ayman al Zawahiri the victim.
Today's headlines follow a similar pattern, with many news outlets playing up the innocents killed and the angry Muslims angle.
UPDATE: Apparently NBC had a reporter named Mushtaq Yusufzai on the scene. This reporter has enough street cred that he landed an interview with the local al Qaeda leader, Faqir Mohammed, who was alleged to be the initial target of the raid. Faqir Mohammed survived, and has vowed.....wait for it....jihad in response to the attack.
Yusufzai heard helicopters...which means that in all likelihood the Pakistanis had some part in it.
No mention of Zawahiri in the article.
