May 6, 1975, at the ripe old age of 7, I hid in the basement while this monster ripped through our city, passing a block away from the house I grew up in.
It remains the third costliest tornado in history.
So I've seen the devastation up close and personal-like. But I've also seen the good that both of these organizations can do in these situations. I vividly remember the help they gave us during that time.
And it's a hand up, not a hand out. Eventually, they went away. Unlike the feddle gubmint, which is actually advertising Food Stamps on the radio here.
Of course, if there are other organizations you think are doing a better job, or are more comfortable with donating to, that's cool too.
For example, our house was completely re-roofed, at no charge, by Mennonites.
You get the drift.
Oh, and it's another reason to shake a servicemember's hand. I also remember the poor National Guardsmen who had the unenviable and boring job of sitting on the corner, day in and day out, protecting us from potential looters.
Of course, that was before George Bush sent them all to Iraq, leaving only elderly women, disabled children, and illegal immigrants to do the job.
