AN Australian Navy boarding crew in the Gulf of Persia repelled an Iranian gunboat that threatened them a matter of weeks before 15 British sailors were captured in a similar incident, it was reported today....Thanks to il mango di Treviso for the e-mail.But BBC reporter Frank Gardner, a security specialist, reported the Australians had pointed their guns at the Iranians and used "colourful language" before the gunboat withdrew.
Do we even need to draw the obvious comparisons....??

I saw a BBC version of this earlier, thought it was funny. The Iranians also tried to grab Americans along the Iran-Iraq border, but were "persuaded" otherwise. I find this bit from the BBC article hilarious:
The circumstances for the Britons in March were slightly different in that they were caught so much by surprise that, had they attempted to repel the Iranians with their limited firepower, they would doubtless have taken very heavy casualties.
1: Why were they "taken so much by surprise"?
2: They would have "doubtless taken heavy casualties" ONLY IF the Iranians decided they actually wanted to fight.
3: Their "limited firepower" included a Royal Navy destroyer well within range of its deck guns, let alone missiles ... apparently they were "caught so much by surprise" they couldn't use a radio, either.
