Greek Hostage Escapes Captors in Iraq

I had not even heard that a Greek woman had been taken hostage in Iraq until I found out that she had escaped. Eleni Sotiriou, who is an NGO aid worker, pulled a fast one on the SOBs who kidnapped her. She was in the country to deliver much needee heart medicine, and this is the thanks she got. The filthy bastards who held her hostage should be strung up.

Cheers to the gutsy lady! Her story below. IHT:

A Greek aid worker kidnapped in Baghdad earlier this week has been released unharmed, the Greek Foreign Ministry said Friday.

Eleni Sotiriou, who works for a non-governmental organization, was released Friday evening and is safe in the Greek Embassy in Baghdad, said ministry spokesman Giorgos Koumoutsakos.

"She is safe and sound," he said.

Sotiriou, vice president of Greece's Heart Doctors aid group, was abducted on Monday outside a hotel in central Baghdad, Koumoutsakos said. He did not say who had abducted her.

"It seems that she succeeded in escaping," he told The Associated Press. "She was taken from a police station to the Interior Ministry in Baghdad, and the Greek ambassador picked her up."

"We do not know why she was abducted and what her abductors' intent was." ...

Sotiriou was in Iraq to deliver a consignment of medicine to a Baghdad hospital, Giataganas said.

"She handed it over and on her way back she was kidnapped outside her hotel," he said. The Heart Doctors group has organized shipments of food and medicine to African and Asian countries over the past five years.

Hat tip: George.

2 My second child is named after my Aunt, who just so happens to be Greek, who's name is also Eleni. Eleni means Helen in English for those that don't know. And yes, the fact that this article is about a Greek Woman that was kidnapped caught my attention because I'm half-Greek. What can I say?
