Kite Flying Turns Deadly in Pakistan (Updated)

At least 11 people died and more than 100 people were injured at an annual spring festival in eastern Pakistan celebrated with the flying of thousands of colorful kites, officials said Monday.
The deaths and injuries were caused by stray bullets, sharpened kite-strings, electrocution and people falling off rooftops on Sunday at the conclusion of the two-day Basant festival, said Ruqia Bano, spokeswoman for the emergency services in the city of Lahore.

What the HELL was going on there?!!

I'm not so sure about Pakistan anymore - they can't even fly kites without killing each other (or themselves.)

UPDATE: Gateway Pundit notes that 861 people have been killed between 2000 and last year in this kite-flying festival. Discuss.

I'm surprised they lifted the ban on kite flying- unless these people were just ignoring it. I can't believe they made it a sport to see how many people's kite strings you can cut- no, wait I can. These people are like crabs in a pot- you don't need a lid, because they keep dragging each other down.

5 Some kinds of kite flying are an extreme sport in that part of the world. I guess you could compare it to people breaking their necks, riding ATV's or falling while climbing. Human beings need excitement, and you can't suppress that by passing a few dumb laws. Not that you can't use market incentives to influence how that need ends up being expressed. USA, all the way!

7 Kite flying has been a blood sport over there forever. They do stuff like coat the strings with crushed glass to cut competitors' strings etc. Oh, and they bet heavily on the outcomes. You know those haul-ass high performance kites? That's what we're talking about here.

The people dying from falling off of rooves while trying to catch some of the kites did just about give me a hemorrhage from laughing though.

8 Kite fighting is a far East invention. Nobody gets hurt doing it over there. I used to watch it all the time. Kids do it.
