Former Hostage Roy Hallums Speaks to HS Students

hallumsspeechslide.jpgRoy Hallums lectured about his captivity and rescue in Iraq to students at his local high school on Wednesday. Suddenly I find myself in envy of some eleventh graders.

Via Pamela Perkins at Commercialappeal.com: Roy Hallums left students and teachers at St. Benedict at Auburndale High School in Cordova dumbfounded Wednesday. If for no other reason than that he was actually there.

The Cordova resident was held hostage in Iraq for 311 days -- from November 2004 until U.S. soldiers rescued him in September 2005.

He was at St. Benedict to talk about the ordeal in his first speech to a school group. Hallums usually speaks at law enforcement training workshops around the country…

...St. Benedict teacher Eric Wells had invited Hallums to speak to his modern history class. After word spread around the school, the speech was moved to the auditorium.

"I think it's really important for them to see the realities of what's going on a half a world away," Wells said. "That there's more than just numbers and news stories."

For many students, Hallums' presentation was surreal.

"I couldn't believe it," said 11th-grader Olivia Broyles. "He made you seem like you were there like him."

Leslie Posey, also in the 11th grade, found it hard to imagine what Hallums went through. "I can't get that in my head," she said.

I was thinking many more young HS and college students could benefit from Roy’s speech. It’s quite a bit different than what many of them will be hearing about the terrorists in other places. Jawa Report Roy Hallums Archive.
