Andy McCarthy on "Optimism"

Posted at NRO:

Optimism is a major problem if it causes one to discount huge difficulties (see, e.g., the sunny assumption that democracy will quickly take hold in the Muslim world because we are all supposedly hard-wired to love freedom) or becomes an excuse to avoid confronting huge difficulties (see, e.g., the sunny assumption that diplomacy will make Iran stop building nukes, stop promoting terror, stop destabilizing Iraq, etc.). I am not an optimist in these regards, and I would prefer if my next president isn't either.
Amen to that.

1 There is a difference between optimism and naivety.  Optimism is fine, so long as it realistic.  The worst problem is the pessimism and cynicism of the Dems and 'Progressives'.  Every movement is driven by (1) a vision for the future, and (2) a grievance about today.  Boy Scouts, Al Qaida, Republicans all have this.  'Progressives-Socialists' have no vision, because Communism failed, spectacularly, and the 'workers paradise' has never worked.  Dems and 'Progressive-Socialists' have no workable vision, only dark and gloomy grievances.
