Pappy Boyington
The University of Washington, in response to a proposal to erect a monument for decorated WWII Marine pilot Col. Gregory "Pappy" Boyington, decided that they didn't need "any more monuments to rich white men" and that they weren't too keen on the idea of putting up a monument that, you know, dealt with like, war and killing and stuff. Well, as it turns out the student senate (contact information here: http://www.asuw.org/directory.php) is having another senate meeting tonight, 2/14 at 5pm.
If you feel moved, drop them a line.

Just for reference, they wanted to have work started (not necessarily completed) by Jan 11, 2008 - the 20th anniversary of his death. Read through the minutes, fascinating stuff.
UPDATE:
This is the current response from the student council president, who I am sure, is getting deluged right now. I have to give the guy credit - it's a mature response in what must be a trying situation. He doesn't dodge or spin, he's taking responsibility - I think there are a number of DC denizens who would do well to heed his example.
The blog news and the draft minutes that were posted are inaccurate. First, Ashley Miller's statements were highlighting, as a point of information, that the majority of our statues are white males, which was an issue previously addressed last year, this is not in any way meant to go against Colonel Boyington. It was noted by the sponsor, Andrew Everett, about Boyington's heritage later. Jill Edwards made here statements as an individual, and it should not be assumed she speaks for all students. Karl Smith wanted to honor his service as a whole (he risked his life, endured 20 months in a POW Camp) in an effort to bring more support from a number of students who do not morally agree with war. These statements are in public discourse that has been and will always be at the University of Washington to educate on the questions and issues of our society.I would also like to remind you that as ASUW President I cosponsored this bill to create a memorial, it failed by one vote, and a good majority of those who voted against it wanted more inclusion of other alumni who were combat veterans who earned the Medal of Honor. This week a new resolution to that effect is being drafted and introduced. In the meantime the ASUW supports veterans in other ways, currently we are supporting state legislation that will hopefully pass and guarantee veterans tuition waivers. In the end, the buck stops here, I would appreciate further comments to be made to me. Please do not participate or condone the hate-filled comments and phone calls made toward individuals in our student government. It has been appalling to see what is being said to people. I too am nauseated.

Not only did they vote down a resolution honoring a Medal of Honor Winner, they also have a resolution pending that will honor THEMSELVES for hosting a reception for a bunch of politicians.

Ashley Miller makes a racist and sexist comment (which turns out to be partially wrong in Boyington's case, which proves her ignorance of history), but it's ok 'cause she was addressing an issue that was raised earlier.
But now, Mr. Dunbar wants to make sure that no one says anything nasty about Ashley.
She's the only one allowed to make slurs.

I am sure that she means an "informed, diverse and equal campus community" of people who are just like her. Why not honor Col "Pappy" Boyington? He was a man of unquestionable courage, and he was a graduate of the U. of Washington. It's a shame the students at your university can't get past their immature biases against a man who was willing to commit the ultimate sacrifice.

Her blog is rather revealing as to the type of person she is and is becoming. She doesn't seem particularly bright. Firstly, I would think a prime rule of public stupidity preparation is to make sure that you do not have your cell phone number and home address publicly posted on your blog. Children say stupid things, but then that is because they are children. The problem is when children think they are all grown up and take themselves very seriously and say stupid things while the rest of the world can see that they are still children.

My father spent the first 2 years of WW2 fighting the Socialsis Labor Party and the last 3 years on the South Dakato fighting the Japs. Reading through the postings I am both appalled and amazed at some of the comments. First I am appalled at the ignorance of some of the statements people are willing to make publicly. Suggesting that we kill someone simply because they have a different view, even if done in jest, is horrifying. Suggesting that we never enter into armed conflict, as appealing as it may be is an unrealistic position . War is a terrible thing which should be avoided, but can not be avoided at the price of freedom. Agree or disagree with the current conflict, it can not be denied that World War II was a necessary conflict. Making blanket statements shows a lack of willingness or ability to think.
Second, I am amazed that folks are willing to play along with someone like t who lacks any conviction (as demonstrated by his use of a false e-mail address), and gets his jollys by goading a reaction from others.

What a disgrace the way this Medal of Honor reciptient was treated. For the record he was not white, but an American Indian. President Harry Truman was commendted about the MOH and he stated that he would give up the presidency to get the MOH. I think that says it all.

The problem here is that the children involved making the comments are not old enough to have experienced the horror of WWII and are simply ignorant of the historical barbarity of the Army of the Empire of Japan prior to and during WWII. College children, by definition, are a privileged lot and sometimes look down their noses at anyone less fortunate (as evidenced by T's disdainful comment regarding McDonald employees). Whether Boyington deserves a statue should not be a matter of race or class - the sole issue that should have been considered is whether he brought more honor and recognition to the UW than other graduates. Disqualifying him because of his race, or because he was heroic in battle against an enemy trying to destroy our country only demonstrates the ignorance of the persons attempting to disqualify him.

Sad that today's kids have forgotten, or never known, the amount of sacrifice that some Americans have given to allow the rest of us to be free. Pappy Boyington was a true hero but was not alone. Countless millions of Americans have sacrificed with their lives to give us our freedom. I would like to personally thank all veterans that have served in past wars and those that are currently serving our country. Without you, we would not be the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.

Okay, I hate to say anything against the teachings of the great Albert Einstein, but unless every person on the planet followed that same belief, and continued to follow it forever and ever, then any person with a mind to do it could gather up an army and wipe out or enslave all those others who refuse to fight. They would be easy pickins!
People who believe that pacifism is the way to peace are fodder for the likes of Hitler, Stalin, Hussein, Napolean, Mao Tse Tung, Chavez, Castro, the list goes on and on...

As a native Seattle-ite, I used to dream (back in ancient times -- the early 60s) of attending the University. But as if to prove not all white guys are rich, I determined I could not afford to attend the school after all. But now I see the controversy over what should have been a non-controversial issue in the first place: honoring an alumnus who did just a bit in his own way to make sure the parent of these … "students" … got the chance to live long enough to have them in the first place.
Is this gratitude or what? Glad I did not have the money to waste.
My dad, who still lives in Seattle, is a veteran of the same conflict as Pappy, and a member of the alumni association. I expect the student Senate will be hearing from the Association presently …
On the old Star Trek show, there was an episode where Kirk and Spock landed on a planet that was run by gangsters, prompting a comment from Spock that "a society with a complete moral inversion appears to be unique."

Some of you guys are very good at making it sound like you know what you are talking about.
But trust me.... You don't.
I think you just want to make yourself sound smart, when in reality you don't know what you are talking about.
