Culturalism

I've been working on an essay on culturalism. In the process of looking into prior work on the subject, I came across this essay. I disagree with a bit of it, but it makes quite a few good points:

The Left has used America's hatred [of] racism to promote racism by insisting that culture and race cannot be separated. By insisting that the value placed on the culture is the value placed on the race the Left has used America's own goodness to force any discussion of culture in to the back alleys. We should consider each race of equal value as we should consider each person of equal value before God. We should not consider each culture of equal value as we should not consider the personality of a saint equal to that of a criminal. As some of us have personalities which need improving in some areas, so do some cultures. To deny this is inevitably to deny the existence of free will.
The essay calls for more dialogue on culture and culturalism, and I couldn't agree more. I'm an unabashed culturalist, and I believe all westerners should be just as unabashed as I am. We live in an age when "western" defines your philosophy more than your geography. I venture that there are likely more "westerners" today in Warsaw or Taipei than there are in London. I believe too many of our fellow citizens have fallen prey to unfounded guilt and leftist nihilism and abandoned their pride in the nobler aspects of western culture. To admit that westerners have often acted regrettably is not to deny that western culture is worth fighting for. I firmly believe that unless and until the West regains confidence in its own basic cultural precepts, the West will fade into obscurity, to be eclipsed by a stronger and more confident philosophy.

Micheal, this will be my last post.  I am pleased that it is on a thread that repeats what I have been trying to  get across. American first. Religion is not a race, a continent does not denote a color and a color is not a country. Perhaps those humble thoughts will plant a small seed somewhere that grows into a person who will contribute to the world being a better place to live in.  Winnbush

Aww! Cute little quiter. Shows that he ain't made of the stuff needed. The Greyrooster is always right. What a guy. I feel so let down. This guy has what it takes and doesn't know it. My college days playing football. Me the offensive tackle. Being beat all day. Then comes the 4 th quarter. Come to scrimmage. Look defensive end in the eye. I know. He knows. Gut it out time. My turn. His name. wb. Running back knows follow Greyrooster. He's made them quit. Sometimes when I all you have is balls. Balls are enough. Your small seed will be pissed on. Winners never quit and quiters never win. Gut check time. Suck it up.

6 The doctrine of cultural equality, or multi-culturalism, takes away personal equality.   It has to.   It no longer matters how a culture treats its people and it no longer matters that people are abused or oppressed if it is part of a culture.

We aren't allowed to judge another culture.

If we can't judge a culture, how can we advocate for the rights of people?

And if we aren't allowed to judge another culture, we can only judge our own.  Only criticize our own.   And since we aren't perfect and we are not allowed to view any other culture's imperfection without being accused of racism or intolerance (since criticism of other cultures violates multi-cultural precepts) the result is that anything done by anyone else is glossed over or tolerantly approved of, while the West, and particularly America, is portrayed as a human rights disaster.

Iran executes gays.   America won't let them serve openly in the military.   Obviously America is a fascist hell hole.

Islamic radicals threaten violence at every turn and gruesomely murder those that defame their prophet or speak ill of Islam.   Christians fuss about a chocolate Jesus.   Obviously Christians are the greater threat.

A rape victim in Iran needs three male witnesses or she gets convicted of adultery and can be stoned to death.   Yet Islam is lovely for women.   Not like the West where feminism is in a never ending war against intolerant haters.

7 Ragnar,
If you haven't already seen it, this video might provide some useful background:

It's the "Clash of Civilizations" debate between Daniel Pipes and 'Red' Ken Livingstone.

9 Leftard inability to distinguish between race vs culture and religion is just proof of how brilliant and "nuanced" they think they are.

10 Islam is more than a religion. It is a culture.

And?

15 greyrooster C'mon! I for one, appreciated his efforts. I thought wb was a happy presence here, and I will regret not seeing his comments. Speak for yourself on wb, but try to consider that some of your allies here liked him just fine. Last word on it.

16 Michael: You need to watch the underlying comments such as wb made. As I said. 4 times he slipped and showed his anti-semitism. He called me racist. I exposed him for his racism. And that is why he's gone. Once exposed he couldn't defend his truthful feelings.
