Wikipidia for Spies

Perhaps I haven't been giving U.S. intelligence agencies the credit they deserve. For the wonkish at heart, the epistemelogically inclined, and for admirers of Hayek alike---read on.

UPDATE: Michael Hampton has related thoughts on the program. Yahoo News:

The U.S. intelligence community on Tuesday unveiled its own secretive version of
Wikipedia, saying the popular online encyclopedia format known for its openness is key to the future of American espionage.

The office of U.S. intelligence czar John Negroponte announced Intellipedia, which allows intelligence analysts and other officials to collaboratively add and edit content on the government's classified Intelink Web much like its more famous namesake on the World Wide Web.

A "top secret" Intellipedia system, currently available to the 16 agencies that make up the U.S. intelligence community, has grown to more than 28,000 pages and 3,600 registered users since its introduction on April 17. Less restrictive versions exist for "secret" and "sensitive but unclassified" material.

The system is also available to the Transportation Security Administration and national laboratories.

The article goes on to say how the system is meant to thwart intelligence mistakes such as bad estimates of Iraq's WMD capability

1 I wrote about this earlier today while waiting for the mailman to arrive with my illegal Vegemite.

The summary: Using a wiki doesn't automatically mean the dots are going to get connected.

6 Duh..With the rise of Wikipedia and Blogs, of course they'd make a more 'official' intranet.
After 9-11 there has been a huge push to conglomerate the major intelligence agencies.
Say what ya want to say about the US Intelligence agencies, but they are the best there is.
The reality is, we pay these folks to predict the future. Not their fault they're not very good at it..no one is. But they are better than most

8 For real!  I think that was the fastest I've ever clicked a "read more" link.

Oh well.  :/

9 Hmmm. Well, it sounds like a good idea, if it will work. Intel pukes keep secrets out of spinal reflex, so it probably will not have all the actual info available. Not unreasonable considering the effect a single mole (or big mouth politician) would have, leaking the info on the wiki to the press or some other enemy.

I also expect some to have tied their careers to positions (just like academia) and use their status to protect the position in order to protect their status.

10 Good point Phil; there are far too many people who cannot be trusted but have top secret security clearances anyway. Islam isn't the main problem - lefturd treason is the problem. If we don't eradicate the lefturds from our society, they will continue to sell us out to our enemies. A good lefturd is a dead one.
