Eric Damfreville Freed in Afghanistan!

UPDATE:
Here is a video report by the BBC on Eric's release::

Wonderful news out of Afghanistan:

The Taliban freed a French aid worker kidnapped last month in Afghanistan, a spokesman for the group said Friday.

Qari Mohammad Yousuf said the Taliban handed over Eric Damfreville to tribal elders in the province of Kandahar. The International Committee of the Red Cross confirmed Damfreville was transferred to its representatives.

There were unconfirmed reports he may be taken to Kandahar airfield, then possibly Kabul, before he heads to France.

This is a wonderful answer to prayers; let's continue to pray for the safe release of Eric's three Afghan co-workers.

Anyone want to bet that newly-elected French President Nicolas Sarkozy made the Taliban an offer they couldn't refuse? Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

1 Maybe that or the outgoing president paid the money,  And there is always the possibility that the Taliban realized that Sarkozy would not pay.

2 That's what I meant. It's an old Godfather reference --- you can tell I'm getting really old.

3 Nah, you are not gettin old. I saw the movie. I really don't mind France pulling out of Afghanistan.

4 The hostage was freed because Sarkozy is considering pulling out of Afghanistan. I don't think ransom was the motive. The Taliban says the Sharia council will decide the fates of the three Afghans later.

5 The Taliban say that they released him in return for a pledge from Sarkozy to eventually withdraw from Afghanistan. I don't think that will be anytime too soon.

6 The Taliban never refuses a few million Euros.

7 Wouldn't it be great if instead, Sarkozy told them asswipes that if the aid worker was not released, he was going to send in more French Foreign Legionnaires and reenforcments for the French Military that are already there.

Yea, that would be great...

8 Papa Ray for president. A threat they would understand if we ever carried it out on time.

Glad to see a life saved but I do wish the do gooders would stay out of the war zones.

10 Costa Rica eh? Lucky you. Enjoy.
Anywho, in reference to the 'France pulling out of A-Stan thing', it reminds me of that apparently misattributed, but still hilarious, quote by General George S. Patton:

'I'd rather have a German division infront of me, than a French one behind.'

Fittingly enough, he was also supposed to've said this:

'The more I see of Arabs the less I think of them. By having studied them a good deal I have found out the trouble. They are the mixture of all the bad races on earth, and they get worse from west to east, because the eastern ones have had more crosses.' Hmmm...

This guy is coming home: good. Let's hope he hasn't aquired too much of a case of Stockholme Syndrome, like Yvonne Ridley for instance, and start harping on about the Taliban are the good guys and the West is evil etc.
