Ethiopia said on Sunday that of its eight nationals kidnapped last month with a group of European travellers in a remote northern desert region had been released in neighbouring Eritrea. The hostage saga had put further strain on ties between the two Horn of Africa foes, who fought a 1998-2000 border war and are blaming each other for stirring up the Somalia conflict.
"Their release is due to pressure imposed on Eritrea by the international community," said a brief government statement read on TV. The eight had been held for 40 days.
The statement, which quoted Ethiopian security sources, said further information, including on the health of the group, would be given on Monday.
Ethiopia blamed Eritrea for the abductions, while Eritrea said separatist rebels were to blame.
