Today, I Make Fire!

Today I'm going to fulfill a lifelong dream. No, not that one involving Angelina Jolie. The one where I make fire. Wish me luck. See y'all on Monday. Over the past few months I've been watching two shows on a regular basis that have rekindled my interest in survival methods: "Survivorman" and "Man vs. Wild". Both awesome shows.

I was a Boy Scout, but for some reason I never actually started a fire the old-fashioned way---with sticks. I attended several demonstrations at Scout camp, but never actually did it myself. Always wanted to.

I'm going to use the "bow and spindle" method. That is where you fashion a small bow to get the spindle stick moving back and forth sufficiently fast enough that friction with the hardwood base creates an ember. I'll use oak for the base, since we have an oak tree in the back yard, and for the spindle I'll try a branch from one of the larger bushes. Since I want to replicate a survival situation, I'll try my shoelace for the bowstring.

I've wanted to do this for years but for something has always kept me back. I think it was embarassment. It seems like something kids would do, you know? My new goal in life is to do more stuff like this. Have more adventures.

For the three people that are interested in how I do with this, I'll post something on Monday. Tomorrow is the blog sabbath. Remember, "Six days thou shalt blog, but on the seventh, thou shalt rest. For in six days the Lord made the blogosphere, and on the seventh he rested from all his blogging."

1 Done that, take your time, and be patient.

Naplam is quicker and has a tendency to give the meat more an octaning flavor.

2 If you have the weapons, you can make someone else build the fire.
Something you might want to keep in mind.

4 Making fire a lifelong dream?
Angelina dog-face Jolie, of French Canuck and canine lineage? WTF???
What kind of nutjob have you become?
Next thing you'll tell us is you're a throat-slitting burqa-clad Muslim queer named Constantine the Inqueerial Emperor.

5 Hey, be careful with the carpet, and don't let the smoke get into the kitchen !! If we see it on the 11:00 news we'll know that something went very very wrong.

6 Sir,
You are way too late. It has been proven that once you pass the age of 12, you no longer have the ability to make fire in that way. It is just a rule of nature. I have a solution, though. Buy a "Dr. Rusty Shackleford Memorial Lighter" from Zippo.

7 I spend a lot of time outdoors and might I recommend the Swedish Fire Steel instead? It attaches to your key chain and you can start a fire in about 3 seconds instead 3 hours. I was able to start a fire with a bow once and just to say I did it. Unless you're either really lucky or have a real talent for the method, expect a lot of frustration and sore hands. If the ground and all of your materials aren't dry as a bone, it will be very difficult.

Because I do a lot of outdoor stuff, I keep a daypack with enough stuff to survive if I start having a really bad day on a mountain. I keep 3 additonal fire-starting methods in there - magnesium thingy (Survivorman tested it in one episode and gave it a thumbs-up after he started his fire in about 2 seconds), waterproof matches, and a lighter.

I like Man vs Wild but his stuff seems a lot more staged. He's never in any real danger since he could always get water, food or shelter from his camera crew. Plus the guy is just fucking nuts but I guess that's what it takes to be on TV these days.

8 I did this once in boyscouts. Ten minutes later with blisters I had fire!

9 Angelina Jolie? You've got to be kidding. She has a face like a pancake. Wonder if she still has Billy Bob's tatoo on her arm.

10 This site, http://www.wildwoodsurvival.com/ has lots of different ways to start fire from without matches, lighter, or flint & steel.

There's even a nifty method using ice to start a fire.

11 All good suggestions from the comments. Here is some homework
from a BBC site, looks about like what I remember from my Boy Scout days.

One thing to remember, after you have the tinder smoldering, blow softly and not toward anything that might catch fire or hit you...

I made that mistake and my Scoutmaster, had to go to the eye doctor. Lucky me, he recovered.

I've been quietly rooting for ya from the sidelines. Make that fire by hand, a man has to live his dreams. I am a bit worried why we haven't had an update though. If you haven't got it lit by now you might want to take a break.

13 Buzzy, he said he would update on Monday. But you have a valid point anyway.

I've never understood Rusty's fascination with Angelina Jolie.

Quite simply put, the woman is uglier than a bagful of assholes.

If you're going to fantasize about the "set fire to the face and put it out with an icepick" group of female celebrities, at least go with Jennifer Tilly, her tits are way huger than Jolie's are.

14 Be careful not to break a nail there Rusty.

15 Ha, ha. Maybe he can get a moderate muslim to hold the stick.

16 I made a fire back in November that has yet to go out. It is warming me as I speak, though the outside temp is just above zero. Do I get a prize? (Also- Jolie has nothing on Julia Ormond.)

17 Sorry Vinnie, last week was full of Mondays around here, got confused. I was hoping that this week might be full of Saturdays obviously that isn't going to be the case.
