Berlinski on Sarkozy

I just came across this profile on Nicolas Sarkozy, written by Claire Berlinski in 2004. Though written in the context of that time, it's a quick and easy read, and sheds a lot of light on just who Sarkozy is. Among the Sarkozy trivia:

In 1993, when Mr. Sarkozy was simultaneously the mayor of the French suburb of Neuilly and France’s budget minister, a madman took 21 schoolchildren hostage in Neuilly, threatening to blow them up. While the minister of the interior and the prime minister remained safely in their offices, Mr. Sarkozy drove directly to the school and offered to exchange himself for the hostages. It is rather hard to imagine Mr. Chirac doing the same thing.
Indeed it is.

1 Ragnar are you suggesting that this is something that should of been done by the Prime Minister?
I don't believe that many would think it proper for the President of these United States to offer to become the hostage of a madman.

2 "...doing the same thing," implies a hypothetical in which Chirac would not do the same thing, had he been mayor. I agree with Ragnar, Chirac is a gutless coward and disingenuous manipulator on the American Democratic Party model.

3 Comrade Ryan,

And why would it not be proper for the President to consider such an action? Is it not his job to lead by example?

It's exactly the sort of selfless act I would expect from President Bush, one that places the welfare of his fellow citizens above himself. I only wish that the new leadership of the House and Senate could understand that concept.

     Respects,
