A great post at Riehlworldview

....we do not celebrate freedom won on July 4th, only freedom proclaimed. We celebrate a beginning, an ideal, today: freedom desired, certainly not yet achieved. And for that desire, of approximately 217,000 serving, 6,188 were wounded and 4,435 died* before America was ever truly free at all, except of course perhaps where it mattered most, in the deep and resounding thump of the American patriot's heart.

And that same ideal beats strongly in the hearts of American patriots today, many, no doubt, currently serving in Iraq. And there it beats in time with the murmured heart of what might one day be a new freedom, a new nation, no longer subject to the cruel tyranny of its past: a new nation of new patriots hopefully equipped to secure the cause of freedom in its portion of the world one day soon without so much of our now necessary help.

If you are true to this day, this July 4th, a day of freedom's beginning with it's difficult end still seven long costly years off and at the time completely unknown, if you say you are true to it, yet can advocate abandoning the weaker but just as freedom longing heart we fight alongside of in Iraq, then, I'm sorry, you are no patriot of freedom at all, my friend. At least, certainly not the kind of patriot we salute today when we celebrate only the day we realized what we wanted and steeled ourselves for the long battle that lie ahead to get it, whatever the cost. I simply cannot believe any genuine patriot of freedom would deny millions of people even the slimmest of opportunities to live under the tremendous gift so many of our forefathers died to give us, the citizens of what has become the boldest and most inspiring and beautiful nation ever known to man: the United States Of America.

The author seems to believe you have to be pro-war and pro-occupation of a FOREIGN country to be a patriot and love THIS country.  Misguided, to say the least.

3 Serious logical fallacies aside, how patriotism is dogmatically described in this post is more akin to fascism than patriotism.

The author unfortunately equates our July 4th celebration of independence (national patriotism) with being a "patriot of freedom" which are two different things.  A patriot is such because of their love of country, and one suspects their willingness to defend it; not because they support freedom for all the peoples of the Earth.

Additionally, it is insulting to assert that those who disagree with our country’s actions in Iraq are not patriots.  The history of our nation is filled with patriots who have disagreed with our government's domestic and foreign policy.

I would ask the author not to imply that “true” patriots are those who are willing to fight for the freedom of all humankind.  This slippery-slope’s logical end is that our foreign policy be such that we are obligated to topple any government in the world where our flavor of freedom is not in effect.

I consider myself to be a patriot.  I was in 3/75th Ranger Battalion, the 82nd Airborne Division, and the 2nd Infantry Division, and I am a disabled veteran.  Though by no means do I feel that only those who have served in the military are patriots, I know that prior military service will increase my credibility for certain readers of this site who probably think I am just some moonbat.

Consider the misuse of patriotism:

“Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

4 Wars are not fought by leaders they are fought by Nations.  Ok Sciguy. I agree war sucks.  But there are other people in the world who seek to impose Sharia law everywhere. Is Sharia your idea of what you want to live under, seriously?

They make war on us as a method to achieve these goals.  Now seeing how war was made upon us what else are we to do.  Peace them to death?  War is a sucky bad solution always.   A lot of people talk about WWII as a great war.  I know a vet of that Great war.  He says it was nothing less than barbaric butchery on a grandscale, "There was nothing good about it".  Not to take away from what those men did for us.  But that's the facts.

I hope that some day people will be smart enough not to make war. That we(man) would not have to win wars to make peace. Any idiot can see the value in that. Once you have every single man and woman on the planet that would make war on us or others convinced of that give me a call.  I'll be all for it.

Sciguy doesn't believe in the wisdom of Eclesiates.  It's not prophecy it's just truth

6 One other point sciguy.  What a pacifist should when his nation is at war is find a way to help.  Like the woman who paints the pictures a few posts down. There are many ways to help your country win a war that don't involve killing.  You can go to iaq and help out treating people or building things.  Make friends one at a time.  You can help people here or send a donation to a cause that helps.  What you are doing is not only not helping it hurts.

What a true patriot should do is hold accountable the leaders that did not plan or properly execute this war - at the very least stop attacking and smearing those of us who try and do it.

We must not let Bush simply walk away from this one - like he did every time one of his businesses failed.  He has never had to face the consequences of his bad decisions...neither has Cheney for that matter.

10 (howie says) Again bo not your personal blogging platform. If you want to put all that one one post on your site and add a link, that would be acceptable. I hope you saved it.

12 Bo - Nice cut and paste. In my humble opinion, you just displayed one of the most un-endearing habits of leftist trolls.  In the absence of a cogent argument, paper a site with other leftist offal.

Please, start thinking for yourself and make your own comments, or in lieu of the hard work of actually thinking, cut and paste on your own website. That way, I might take the time to visit and point out the absolute inanity of your positions.

Otherwise, thanks for playing.

13 Airdale,

Well let us then boil it down to this:

-  you would like nothing more than for people like myself (a free thinking independent) to spoon feed you logic which exists elsewhere.
-  you don't believe at all in government accountability - which puts you at odds with traditional Republican values.

Over to you.

14 God Bless America and all of the men and women in the armed services fighting to protect our country.

Great post!

15 Bo,

again you resort to lies.   It's not the "execution" of the war you oppose,  it's the WAR ITSELF you oppose.  The former is just the means by which you believe supporters of the President's policies can be divided.  Newflash.  We don't buy it.  We're smarter than you.

Yes, we have problems with how the war has been conducted, and we'd like to have seen things done differently, but drawing down our troops and surrendering isn't one of them.  That's why nothing you say has any relevance on this blog.  So eff off already you little pissant.

16 Carlos,

How can you have problems with the way the war has been conducted and blindly support more of the same?  That makes you a complete idiot in the eyes of normal people and why nothing I say, no amount of logic, has any relevance to you.

And you call yourself smart?  LOL!!

Posted by: Bo at July 05, 2007 09:09 AM (rMxJF)

17 Bo,

What on earth gave you the impression that we "blindly support more of the same?"  The opposite is true.  That's why we support the surge.  Because it isn't "more of the same", numbnuts.  Finally we're beginning to fight the war the way it should have been since the beginning.

ps., I don't call myself smart.  That I leave to you Leftards who think you're friggin geniuses.  I said only that we're smarter than you (which wouldn't be difficult).

Posted by: Jesusland Carlos at July 05, 2007 10:02 AM (yJKSD)

18 Carlos,

You support the same pigheaded incompetent leadership, a goal of "victory" which cannot be defined, no benchmarks, and no timetable - in my book you are supporting more of the same.  The escalation will accomplish nothing except raise the body count on both sides.  I'll bet the farm on that prediction and I ain't no lefty genius either.

19 "I ain't no lefty genius" Said that right. No such animal.
