Our Founding Fathers on occassion used the word 'empire' as a descriptive for our fledgling nation. We covered a land area greater than many previous 'empires'. We had merchants sailing to much of the known world, and we had successfully driven away the parent 'empire' while earning our soverignety in the process. When our ships came under attack by Muslim states, we fought those states. protecting our soveriegn right to equal access to the oceans of the world.

I really don't care if you call us an 'empire'. If ben Franklin can use that reference, so can anyone. Show some respect though. Meanwhile, my pride in our country is not 'hubris' and since I know my mythology, I do know the difference between those terms. If you measure all the good that has been done in the world since 1776, and assigned credit to the nations according to their contributions to that good, the USA would surely win. I'm sure that is true even after the deductions for our mistakes. I'm not sure what to make of your suggestion that my patriotism is 'hubris'. Does that mean you don't think you have 'hubris'?
