Fallujah: Recruiting Iraqis to Fight Terrorism

Bill Ardolino's latest report from Fallujah is about police recruiting day.
Shortly after the U.S. freed Fallujah from its Taliban like "shura" government--which executed citizens for being too 'Western'--there were no police to keep civil order. Two years later nearly 700 police are in the city. That number continues to grow.

Each recruit joins to build a new Iraq at his own risk. The "mujahideen" will kill any person they can get their hands on who they even suspect works for the government. Their families are at risk, too.

Washington Examiner:

When asked who the insurgents were and why they committed acts of violence, he offered two reasons: They want to control the economic levers of power — the police are paid too well — and Iraq’s neighbors were funneling money and resources into the country to destabilize the government.
Don't miss out on the photos from recruiting day posted at Bill's blog.

Mookie's In The Hot Seat

Those rotten teeth could be a'chatterin.'

BAGHDAD, Iraq -
Iraq's prime minister has dropped his protection of an anti-American cleric's Shiite militia after U.S. intelligence convinced him the group was infiltrated by death squads, two officials said Sunday.

What will Iran do? They stand at the precipice, will they jump off of it?

Activist Andrea Parhamovich Killed in Baghdad Ambush

parhamovich.jpg

Activist Andrea Parhamovich was killed in an ambush in Baghdad on Wednesday:

Parhamovich, 28, an activist with the Washington-based National Democratic Institute, died Wednesday in an ambush on her convoy as it traveled through one of Baghdad's most dangerous neighborhoods. An al-Qaida-linked coalition of Iraqi Sunni insurgents claimed responsibility for the attack. . . .

Three security contractors from Hungary, Croatia and Iraq also were killed in the attack, and two other people were wounded.

Parhamovich, a graduate of Marietta College in southeast Ohio, had been working with NDI in Baghdad since late 2006. She helped Iraqi political parties reach out to voters.

"She didn't agree with the war, but she felt that now that we're here, she wanted to do what she could to help the Iraqis," Hastings said in a telephone interview. "She wasn't afraid of taking risks." . . .

U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad condemned the attack.

"The young American who was killed in this attack along with her security team exemplified a commitment by all those who have never wavered in their resolve to build a stable, united and democratic Iraq," he said in a statement.

Comedian and radio show host Al Franken, who worked with Parhamovich at the liberal radio company Air America for about 18 months, said he was devastated by her death.

Brian Maloney has more on Andrea Parhamovich here.

Al Qaeda Evacuates Baghdad

More proof the President's plan to increase troop levels is pie-in-the-sky dreaming.

PJM in Seattle:

Al Qaeda terrorists are fleeing Baghdad in advance of President Bush’s 21,500-man troop surge, a senior military intelligence officer told Pajamas Media today. Under orders from the al Qaeda commander in Iraq, Abu Ayyub al-Masri, fighters are streaming toward the Diyala region of Iraq....

The apparent evacuation of Baghdad by al Qaeda forces comes from direct orders issued by al-Masri, the former soldier who took control of the Iraqi wing of al Qaeda following the June 2006 bombing death of Zarqawi.

Initially, the intelligence officer informed Pajamas, the Baghdad-based AQ fighters did not want to leave. Al-Masri had to send unequivocal orders for their retreat, adding that one of the lessons from the Fallujah campaign was that Americans have learned how to prevail in house-to-house fighting. Masri said that remaining in Baghdad was a ‘no-win situation’ for the terrorists.

“In more than ten years of reading al Qaeda intercepts, I’ve never seen language like this,” the intelligence officer said. Usually, al Qaeda communications are full of bravado and false confidence, he added.

Iraq the Model has the same news, from Iraqi sources here. America's imminent defeat at the hands of Bushitlermchaliburton and neo-con Zionist cabal.......

Of course, not losing to al Qaeda (or other Salafis), Baathists, and Khomeinists is not the same as winning the war. As Bryan and Michelle have recently reminded us, to win means something more. But I'll take not losing over immediate withdrawal--which is how al Qaeda defines defeat for us--any day.

From the Front: Fallujah and Domestic terror

falafel.jpgThe money quote from Bill Ardolino's latest dispatch from the front:

INDC: Ok. One last, quick question: what do you think of Americans, and has that opinion changed over time?

Mohammed: "I think we need the Americans. If they go out right now it's gonna be a disaster. And believe me, even if they get out of Fallujah, Washington itself will be a target."

Wow.

Saddam Henchmen Hanged, One Beheaded

(Baghdad) Before dawn today (0000 GMT), two of Saddam Hussein's senior aides were executed by hanging. According to government spokesman Ali Al Dabbagh, there were no violations of procedure and no chanting as Barzan Ibrahim Al Tikriti and Awad Hamed Al Bander were hanged. Wrong. I chanted.

The head of former intelligence chief and half-brother of Saddam, Barzan Ibrahim Al Tikriti, was ripped from his body during the procedure. Government adviser Bassam Al Husseini stated it was an "act of God" for his crimes against humanity. Barzan, 55, directed the murder of 148 Shia Muslims from Dujail, including having agents put people in a meat grinder.

A Sunni member of parliament, Saleem Al Jibouri, said Barzan's body may have been weakened by cancer and, thereby, causing the head to come off. However, experts will be consulted to determine if the rope was correct in length.

Awad Hamed Al Bander, 60, kept his head. Bander was chief justice of the Iraqi Revolutionary Court that sentenced 148 Shia men and boys to death after a 1982 assassination attempt on Saddam in Dujail.

Prosecutors said Bander sentenced some of the men from Dujail after they had already been killed and that among those sentenced were under-18s who could not legally be executed.
Thoughtful guy, eh? Kill then sentence.

From Canada.com:

Official video of the hanging of two of Saddam's co-defendants shows the corpse of the late dictator's half-brother lying headless below the gallows, his severed head several metres away.

The video shows Barzan Ibrahim, Saddam's half-brother and former intelligence chief, and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, head of Iraq's Revolutionary Court, being hanged side by side.

They wore red prison jumpsuits. As they reached the gallows black hoods were put on their heads.

Five masked men surrounded them.

In summary, it's been an eventful day thus far in Baghdad. The world has been rid of two buddies of Saddam Hussein, all convicted on November 5, and Shia citizens are celebrating in Baghdad's Sadr City slum. And, somewhere there's video which has been shown to reporters but the government said it will not release it.

Iraqi's Reaction To Teh Speach

First off, let me say that I am sick of the term "surge" to the point of upchuck every time I see or hear it. It's like a few years ago when the media went ga-ga over the word "gravitas." Whatever happened to good old "reinforcements?"

I'm starting to feel like the Knights Who Say Nee! whenever they heard the word "it." "Oh no! He said it again! Now I've said it!"

Anyway...

Amir Taheri in the New York Post pens this:

"A sigh of relief!"

So one resident of Haifa Street, in the heart of Baghdad's badlands, reacted to the new plan to secure the Iraqi capital with the help of thousands of additional American troops.

"Maybe the Americans aren't running away after all," said the resident, a Sunni Arab, over the phone moments after President Bush unveiled his new plan. "The message seems to be that the United States will remain committed as long as Bush is in the White House."

Some 70 percent of Baghdad's violence is concentrated in five neighborhoods, where both Shiites and Sunnis have been the targets of rival death squads for months. Other Baghdadis say the population of those areas will greet the American troops with sweets and flowers.

Of course, it will be some time before we see how this pans out. I certainly hope it does as Mr. Taheri describes. However, I don't expect the lovely folks at crAP, MargaReuterVille, or any other MSM outlet to report it that way. I foresee many "wedding parties" being exterminated in the coming months.

IF, and only IF, the reinforcements arrive with a change in the Rules of Engagement, that is.

In related news, not all Baghdadis are too enthused about the new influx of American forces.

Oh, and as an aside, could someone please tell me WTF "put 'em on the glass" means? I missed that in blogger class.

The crAP

I was enjoying the article until this came along:

The militia has more fighters, weapons and sophistication today than it did in 2004, when it battled U.S. forces to a standstill in two strongholds, the Shiite holy city of Najaf and Sadr City, Baghdad's sprawling Shiite slum.

Uh...they hid in mosques, which we refused to attack. Hardly "battling to a standstill."

It's semantics, I know. But it's implied that we couldn't have kicked their asses if we wanted to, when the exact opposite it is true.

It got worse after that, and I won't quote anymore. But I am making crAP the official designation for the Associated Press at the Jawa Report, taking its place in history next to MargaReuterVille and Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey Press.

Jamil Hussein Denies Being Source for Burning 6 Story (Bumped)

UPDATE (Good Lt.): (Bumped, because the AP doesn't wish it to be seen or known.) Commentor Shad puts it quite succinctly at protein wisdom:

"I guess I still don’t understand why the lefties are all doing a celebration dance.

The AP reported a story with two named sources saying that 6 people had been dragged into the street and burned alive, 4 mosques had been utterly destroyed, and 18 more people were killed in the obliterated mosques.

After investigating this amazing story, it turned out that:

* One of the sources immediately recanted his version of the story.

* No one was burned in the streets.

* No mosques were destroyed.

* No one was killed in the mosques that weren’t destroyed.

* A month or so later the AP has finally found an Iraqi named Jamil Hussein, but he denies being the AP’s source.

In sum, the AP published an utterly false enemy propaganda story, which has been recanted/denied by both of their named sources and demonstrated as inaccurate by people in Iraq who investigated the sites allegedly involved in the carnage. Yet according to the latest round of Townhouse groupthink, all of this is somehow damaging to the people who were critical of the AP’s original fantasy and exposed it as a pack of lies.

Very odd."

Hey - Kathy Carroll says you should just shut the f*ck up. Why question any of that? More fun at Dan Riehl. The AP thinks its done here, and that' s good. Now that we've established that Hussein is a real person, it will allow these initial inquiries into his stories to keep percolating, uninterrupted.
- - -
Curt at Flopping Aces this and more from a source in the Civilian Police Assistance Training Team:
The real issue is this: Jamil works in Al Khadra (think of Staten Island) -- he's telling the media about Al Hurriah murders (Think of Queens -- it's a different area of the city):

* Why would any reporter consider this guy a reliable source under these circumstances?

* There are no bodies.
* The source is a police officer from a different area of the city
* There's no official police report to refer to -- so where did the information come from?
* The bodies were reportedly taken to a hospital morgue that doesn't have a morgue
* There are no family member reports, complaints or interviews
* There are no pictures or video of the event.
* None of the other media in Baghdad are covering this

....MOI officials have now questioned Captain Jamil Ghlaim at MOI headquarters. Ghlaim continues to deny speaking to AP or any other media outlet.

Plot meet thickener.

Oh, and just in case you came looking for the original, uncut, uncensored version of the Saddam Hussein execution video.

Terrorists Love Peace Activists: Lee Tucker Propaganda Film

lee_tucker1.jpgIt's not so much that anti-war activists believe they are pro-terrorist as much as the fact that they are objectively pro-terrorist. That is, they share the same goals with terrorists in Iraq and thus, those terrorists support the peace activists.

Here are the links offered at a webpage which is run by the Islamic Army in Iraq's al Boraq Media. The site is composed of materials taken off a flash drive from a Marine, Spc. Lee Tucker, who was allegedly killed in an IED attack, who was also opposed to the war. The webpage is to promote a new propaganda film produced by the Islamic Army in Iraq which is aimed at American audiences.

However, I was unable to find any confirmation of Spc. Tucker's death. None. Which is interesting to find on a webpage about "Lee's life for lies", when apparently the premise of the website---that Spc. Tucker died for a lie--is in itself a lie! UPDATE: SITE institute confirms Lee Tucker alive. Laura Mansfield as well.

The Islamic Army in Iraq is the same terror organization that murdered American hostage Ronald Schulz and Italian Red Cross worker Enzo Baldoni---and dozens of other innocent civilians. All murdered on video. The group once had a working relationship with Abu Musab al Zarqawi.

In fact, near the end of the video a member of al Boraq interviews what it calls an American peace activist named "John Smith" from New York. There is no real difference between what the terrorist interviewer and the anti-war activist believe about the Iraq war. War for oil, imperialism, Zionists, etc.

Also, be sure to check out this webpage full of posters produced by the Islamic Army in Iraq. In addition to poor spelling, you will also notice the uncanny similarity between IAI propaganda and that of Code Pink and other antiwar groups.

Prominent among the links found at the terrorist website?

Code Pink
Golden Star Families for Peace
Bring Them Home Now!
Casey's Peace Page (Yes, Cindy Sheehan)
United for Peace and Justice
The Guerrero Azteca Project
Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW)
Military Families Speak Out
Mothers Against the Draft
Progressive Democrats of America
Veterans for Peace

Interestingly enough, I was looking at the source code for the page and Code Pink is so important to whoever designed the webpage for the Islamic Army in Iraq, that they insisted on putting the word "codepink" in the metadescription.

The next time some tinfoil conspiracy nut says that terrorists want us to keep fighting in Iraq, ask them to explain their explicit support of American peace activists. more...

Saddam to Swing By Sunday

According to an NBC report, brutal Iraqi tyrant Saddam Hussein will be hanged by this Sunday:

According to a U.S. military officer who spoke on condition of anonymity, Saddam will be hanged before the start of the Eid religious holiday, which begins at sundown Saturday.

The hanging could take place as early as Friday, NBC’s Richard Engel reported.

CBS reports that Saddam's journey to hell will be videotaped:
"We will video everything," National Security adviser Mouffak al Rubaie said. "All documentation will be videoed. Taking him from cell to the execution is going to be videoed, and the actual execution will be documented and videoed."
Saddam's necktie party was upheld by the Iraqi courts on Tuesday.

IA CAPTURES AL QAEDA TERRORIST CELL LEADER

KristianMenchaca-ThomasTucker.jpg[More uncensored news from Iraq, as written by soldiers in the field]

BAGHDAD - Special Iraqi Army Forces, with coalition advisors, captured an Al Qaeda in Iraqi terror cell leader during operations Dec. 26 in Al Yousifiyah, south of Baghdad.

The terrorist is believed responsible for kidnapping two US Soldiers from a checkpoint in Yousifiyah in June, 2006. The Soldiers were later found tortured and murdered.

Recently, the terrorist was commenting on the kidnapping during the showing of a video CD at a Yousifiyah mosque. The CD reportedly showed the kidnapping of the US Soldiers. The terrorist is also suspected of perpetrating numerous kidnappings, murders and other violent crimes within the Yousifiyah area.

Iraqi forces conducted an air-assault operation and quickly captured the terrorist without incident. One other person detained was later released.

There was minimal damage done to the objective. There were no Iraqi civilian, Iraqi forces or Coalition Forces casualties.

[End Centcom release]

I have added some background and previous TJR coverage of this below.

This man is believed to have led the cell that kidnapped Kristian Menchaca and Thomas Tucker. Other terrorists linked to the cell and believed responsible for the murder and mutilation of their bodies were killed or captured in July.

Jawa report posts on the graphic sickening videos of this war crime here and here.

Lorie Byrd’s report on why you should see what a real war criminal is located here.

As horrible as the image of the recent video must be, I couldn’t help but think that maybe some of those who have forgotten, or who never fully recognized the extent of evil we face, should see it. Could anyone watch such a thing and remain complacent about the threat of terrorism?

After all we have now seen, it is impossible to deny the evil that we face, although there are still some who try to justify or diminish it.

U.S. ARMY UNIT RESCUES KIDNAPPED IRAQIS FROM INSURGENTS

[More uncensored news from Iraq, as written by soldiers in the field]

CAMP AL ASAD, Iraq - U.S. forces rescued two Iraqis who were held captive by insurgents in the Euphrates River-city of Hit, Iraq, Wednesday.

Soldiers from the Friedburg, Germany-based 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division rescued the kidnapping victims after pursuing insurgents who were fleeing in three vehicles containing the captives.

In their escape, the insurgents fled on foot, abandoning their vehicles and victims.

The soldiers found the victims under a palm tree, handcuffed near the abandoned vehicles.

No one was killed or injured during the incident.

"This demonstrates Coalition forces' ability to quickly respond," said Col. W. Blake Crowe, commanding officer for the Twentynine Palms, Calif.-based Regimental Combat Team 7.

RCT-7 is the Coalition forces unit responsible for training Iraqi security forces and providing security in communities throughout more than 30,000 square miles in western Al Anbar Province.

A search of the vehicles revealed multiple weapons and munitions as follows:

* (7) RPGs
* (5) Hand Grenades
* (6) AK-47 Magazines
* (1) Draganov sniper rifle with magazine
* (1) 57 mm. Projectile
* (3) Mortar propellant

Further investigation revealed that the kidnapping victims were relatives of Iraqi policemen in nearby cities.

Marines here say the insurgents view the developing Iraqi police forces throughout western Al Anbar as their greatest threat.

"They (insurgents) know that well-led, well-trained and well-equipped Iraqi police will defeat the insurgency", said Crowe.

Since RCT-7 assumed responsibility of the region in February, more than 2,800 Iraqi men have joined the ranks of police forces and are working in cities throughout western Al Anbar.

1-36 is responsible for training Iraqi security forces and providing security in Hit, in support of "Operation Al Majid." Majid is an on-going, synchronized Coalition and Iraqi security forces "clearing and holding" operation intended to disrupt and defeat insurgent activity throughout more than 30,000 square miles in western Al Anbar Province.

The operation began late last month.

The battalion deployed to Iraq in February. more...
